Dying To Read (180)- DIVIDING EDEN by Joelle Charbonneau

Hey y’all thanks for stopping by to see my Dying to Read post and of course as always I have to give credit to the lovely Jill over at Breaking the Spine for the Waiting on Wednesday Meme!

I love Joelle so I am super excited for this one!

Title: DIVIDING EDEN

Find it: Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | iBooks
A sweeping fantasy, by the bestselling author of The Testing, about two royal siblings forced to compete for the crown.

Twins Carys and Andreus were never destined to rule Eden. With their older brother next in line to inherit the throne, the future of the kingdom was secure.

But appearances—and rivals—can be deceiving. When Eden’s king and crown prince are killed by assassins, Eden desperately needs a monarch, but the line of succession is no longer clear. With a ruling council scheming to gain power, Carys and Andreus are faced with only one option: to take part in a Trial of Succession that will determine which one of them is worthy of ruling the kingdom.

As sister and brother, Carys and Andreus have always kept each other safe—from their secrets, from the court, and from the monsters lurking in the mountains beyond the kingdom’s wall. But the Trial of Succession will test the bonds of trust and family.

With their country and their hearts divided, Carys and Andreus will discover exactly what each will do to win the crown. How long before suspicion takes hold and the thirst for power leads to the ultimate betrayal?
So what do you think? Will you be adding this to your pile? What are you dying to read this week?

Two Chicks on Books Turns 4! And a Giveaway!!!

Wow! I can't believe it's been 4 years! It seems like these past 4 years have flown by. I still remember my very first post, a review of Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton (which was a horribly written review lol). I remember the first people I met from blogging and some of them have become my best friends! Yes Rachel, Mindy, Nancy, Debbie, Pam, Bella, Rachel (Parajunkee), Damaris, Andye, Jess, Bonnie, Cameron, Bridget, Sophie, Katie, Jenny, Danny, Amber, Julie, and Jen I'm talking to you! Love you ladies :D

I also remember the awesome authors and publishers who have been a blessing to work with I love you all! If I mentioned everyone this would be quite a long post. But I did want to send a special shout out to Veronica Rossi, Talia Vance, Katherine Longshore, Cory Jackson, AG Howard, Sara B Larson, Claudia Gray, Martina Boone, Maria V. Snyder, Cat Winters, and Joelle Charbonneau you have been some of my favorite authors and have become amazing friends! To the local ladies we must meet for Margaritas soon!

So what has changed in 4 years? It doesn't seem like much but it's actually been a lot. To start I had a partner... but after the first year it wasn't working out so we parted ways. I couldn't lose the blog name I had come to love so I'm still Two Chicks on Books. I've also gone through 3 blog designs and this current one is by far my favorite! When I first started blogging I had always dreamed of working in publishing and 3 years ago that dream started to come true. I became an intern at Entangled Publishing and 3 years later I'm a Publicity and Marketing Director for Month9Books! I love my company so much! Thanks Georgia McBride for the amazing opportunity! I also started a blog tour company with one of my besties Rachel from Fiktshun and Rockstar Book Tours has been a blast! I can't believe we've been doing this for 2 years now!

So ok I'm not one for long winded posts but what I really wanted to say is thank you!!! All of you who have been a part of this 4 year journey I am so blessed to have each of you in my life and I'm looking forward to more years of blogging to come and to meeting more awesome people! And to celebrate turning 4 I'm giving away stuff because whats's better than giveaways?!?!

Top Ten Tuesday (5)-Top Ten Characters I Wish Would Get Their OWN Book

Hi and welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post! Looks like I'll be sticking with this one for a while since I enjoy this meme!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

November 11: Top Ten Characters You Wish Would Get Their OWN Book (minor or just maybe a semi main character you wish a book was from their POV)

This one I thought would be easy there's a ton of characters I love right? But when I got to thinking about it I'm not sure how many would be great in their own book but here's my 10.

1. Ari and Janco from THE STUDY and THE GLASS Books by Maria V. Snyder. Yeah, yeah I know there's 2 here but these two are a package deal and I love Janco but those two together are hilarious!

2. Kenji from Tahereh Mafi's SHATTER ME Series! Kenji was for me one of my favorite characters in the book! Yeah I loved Juliette and Warner (not Adam) but If I had to pick I would have said screw both Adam and Warner and ran off with Kenji!

3.Raffe from Joelle Charbonneau's THE TESTING Series. He's such an interesting character and even though he's only in the last 2 books I fell hard for this guy! I'd love to see a POV from him about his life since he didn't have to go through the Testing like Cia did.

4. Blake from Wendy Higgins' SWEET Trilogy. Doesn't everyone love Blake? This kid... the Duke of Envy's son would be so awesome to read about he leads a colorful life.

5. Nolan from Page Morgan's THE DISPOSSESSED Series. Yes, I know he has scenes from his POV (cough confessional scene cough) but I'd read a whole damned book just about him!

6. Jackal from Julie Kagawa's BLOOD OF EDEN Series. This so much!!! I freaking loved his character and would love to read about him when he was turned.

7. Red from A.G. Howard's SPLINTERED series. This chick is crazy times a thousand! I'd love to see what made her that way.

8. Kat from Gena Showalter's THE WHITE RABBIT CHRONICLES. I adore her and her relationships with Ali and the crew. It's be cool to see her POV since she's one of the non slayers in the group. Also some sexy times with Frosty would be cool too ;)

9. Felix from Sarah Cross's BEAU RIVAGE Series. Yes I know he's the bad guy but if you've read the book you can't help feel bad for this dude. I kinda (not kinda I really) love him. He can't help what he is, it's his curse.

10.Roar from Veronica Rossi's UNDER THE NEVER SKY Series. I know he has a novella but I need more! I'd read a whole series from his POV!

So this is my list. What about you? What would you re-read if you had the time?

And come back next week for theTop Ten Sequels I Can't Wait To Get

Hugs,
Jaime

The Final Test is the Deadliest!

Now on to the scene from Raffe's POV!

Raffe (Independent Study version)

Induction Day.
After working for this moment for years, its no wonder that I am awake and ready earlier than everyone else.  Standing in the hang out room next to the lit fireplace, I look around me at everything I always thought I wanted then down at the gold bracelet and the symbol smack in the center.  The coiled spring sitting beneath the scales of justice.  Why the coiled spring?  Got me.  After looking at the symbols the other students were given, I have to guess the administration assigned random designs hoping we could read into them something that fit us.  Whatever.  But the scales do mean something.  Balanced scales to remind us that the government is supposed to seek justice for everyone.  Yeah, right.
But despite the lack of meaning to me, the design is nice.  Good composition.  Whoever created the symbols is skilled.  For a moment, I wonder if the symbol was fabricated by a male or female.  Whether the artist always wanted to etch designs in metal or if they failed to make it into the University and reluctantly embraced a different life.  Lucky them.
“Hey, Raffe.”
I turn as Damone strolls into the room and walks over to where I stand next to the fireplace.  I smile.   It never hurts to be nice to someone who thinks he’s your friend.  “Ready to become an official University student?” I ask.
He shrugs his bony shoulders.  The guy has always been skinny.  Kind of like a snake, which would be a fitting symbol for his bracelet.  The only real annoyance is that he’s taller than me.  Looking up at Damone for any reason seems wrong.
“I’ve been ready for years. “  Damone leans against the fireplace and I imagine him setting his pants on fire.  That makes my smile real as he continues talking,  “If it weren’t for all these colony students they wouldn’t have to bother with the whole Induction process.  They’d already know which students are capable of being successful.  What a waste of time.  It’s not like there was any doubt we’d get in.  Right?”
“Sure.”  There’s no point in reminding him that he would never have made it this far if it weren’t for his father’s influence or his Induction team’s abilities.  Damone isn’t exactly a mental giant.
Damone looks over his shoulder to make sure no one is around and when he turns back to me I see calculation on his face. “We have a problem.”
“Us as in you and me?”
Damone shakes his head.  “One of our classmates should never have been accepted to the University.  Professor Holt wants assistance from loyal University students in removing her.  She asked Griffin and I to help and I suggested to Griffin that we bring you in.  It never hurts to do a favor for someone like Professor Holt and I think you’ll be as happy as I am to get rid of the colony brat.”
          “Who?”
“The one who showed you and your team up a couple days ago.  Cia Vale.”
          Cia.
I rub the spot on my arm where I was burned. It’s healed now, but I still bare the scar.  The medical team could make it fade, but I want to keep it.  A reminder of what happens when you rely on anyone but yourself.  My Induction team, which included Damone’s best friend, Griffin, was so damn cocky.  And when things went to hell it was Cia that stopped to help me.  She shouldn’t have.  It cost her team time and could have cost them winning, something she didn’t seem to care about.  I don’t understand colony kids.  But I certainly plan to.
“You’re good with the girls.”  Damone gives me a sly smile that make me want to deck him.  “I figure you have a better shot of getting close to her than Griffin and I do.  I think she might even have a crush on you already.  Why else would she come back to treat your burn?”
          Why else would she?
“I heard she has a boyfriend.”  Actually, I know she does.  I asked around about the duo from Five Lakes.
“I’m sure that’s never stopped you before,” Damone grins.
No one ever accused Damone of having class.  That’s for sure.  Still, I’m intrigued.   “Why is Professor Holt so threatened by Cia?”
Damone shrugs again.  “She didn’t say and I don’t care.  Having one less colony student around, especially one that thinks she’s better than everyone else is good enough reason for me.  And I’m happy to have Professor Holt owe me when test time rolls around.  What do you say?  It’s not like she’s hard to look at.  Griffin and I will watch where she goes and who she talks to.  Between the three of us, we can get Professor Holt the information she needs to redirect that Five Lakes Colony wannabe out of this place.   What do you think?  Are you in?”
I hear footsteps in the hall and voices coming from the stairs telling me people are heading out of their rooms for the ceremony.  Induction will begin shortly, which means we have to get outside and in our designated positions soon.  But I can tell from the intensity of Damone’s stare that he won’t wait until later for an answer.
I catch a glimpse of long dark hair in the middle of a group of students passing by and I take a step toward the door so I can watch as Cia walks toward the dining hall.  Probably to grab a snack with the rest of them before the festivities begin.  Yeah – Damone isn’t right about much, but looking at Cia isn’t a hardship.  She’s pretty and acts like she doesn’t know it with makes her even more attractive.  High cheekbones.  Slightly upturned nose and lightly tanned skin. But as pretty as her face is, it’s her dark eyes that caught my interest when I told her she didn’t have to come back to help me and she responded “Yes, I did.”    Serious.  Kind.  Determined.  Sad.  And in the middle of all of that, secrets.  Lots and lots of secrets.
Cia.  A girl from Five Lakes.  A girl who Professor Holt has targeted, which means Cia’s secrets are important.  How important?  Will they give me the answers I’m searching for?”
“Sure.  I’m in,” I say.  “I’ll start as soon as the ceremony is over.”
“Great.”  Damone slaps me on the shoulder and grins.  “I told Griffin you’d do it.  You’re one of us.”
No, I’m not.  But I don’t dispute his belief as we walk out into the sunshine and lineup for the ceremony that makes our University student status official.  I’m no longer like Damone and Griffin.  Or maybe I am.  Because as I Professor Holt clips my new silver and gold bracelet on my arm, I understand that the scales on the symbol aren’t really balanced.  They tilt in the direction of whoever is in power.  Those are the people who can demand answers and action.   They are the ones that know everyone’s secrets.  I plan on being one of them.

Loved this! Thanks Joelle!

About Joelle:

Ever since I can remember I loved telling stories. As I grew up, I started performing those stories on the stage. Creating vivid characters and singing wonderfully complex songs were my passion. I graduated from Millikin University with a Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance and then continued onto DePaul University for my Masters Degree in Opera Performance. From there I went onto perform across the Chicagoland area in a variety of Operas, Operettas and Musicals. I also started teaching acting classes and private voice lessons to pass my passion along to the next generation.
Not exactly the path you’d expect a writer to take.
I’d never dreamed of writing a novel. But I loved to read. Then one day I had an idea and I started to write. I found my passion for creating characters lived on the page as well as the stage. It is my hope that the characters I’ve created resonate with you and make you smile.
I still teach voice lessons and sing for the occasional professional event. But the rest of my time is spent with my husband and son while dreaming up new and interesting stories. I hope that someday I hear yours.

For the future of her world depends on her decision.

Now on to the Dream Cast!

A girl’s gotta dream….

I was really excited when Jaime asked me to come up with my dream cast for The Testing trilogy.  When I write, I never think about which actor could play which part.  In fact, even after Paramount optioned THE TESTING on launch week, I purposely didn’t give casting any real thought because I was too busy revising Graduation Day.  I could only see the characters that lived in my imagination.  They didn’t look like actors.  They looked like—well—them.

But now that the series is written and I’ve had a chance to move onto a new project, I loved looking at the characters with the thought of which actors would best bring them to life on screen.   Now, I think I should best confess that I totally want to play a part if it ever really gets made into a movie.  I’m thinking I’d be great at Cia’s Mom or one of The Testing officials.  Of course, I’d also be happy if they just let me sneak on set for a day to watch a scene being filmed.   The idea of someone bringing The Testing off the page and onto the screen is just astonishing.  Here’s hoping it happens.  And if it does…ahem…here are my casting suggestions!

Malencia (Cia) Vale – Francesca Santoro

You can’t look her up on IMDB because she isn’t there – yet!  Francesca (Chessie) is currently finishing her senior year at Syracuse Univeristy where she is majoring in Musical Theater.  She is also my voice student and one of the main inspirations for The Testing.  She is also wickedly talented.  Cia is a girl who is idealistic as well as smart.  I think casting an unknown talent to play Cia is the best way to pull the reader into the world of The Testing.  That way they won’t be seeing a star from some other movie.  They’ll be seeing Cia all the way.

Tomas Endress –  Freddie Highmore

Boy next door cute, looks trustworthy and he knows how to bring great energy to the big screen!

Malachi – Nadji Jeter

I think he’d be fabulous as the shy, socially awkward Malachi.

Zandri –  Emma Roberts

She might be a little too old, but she has the abandon and fabulous hair of Zandri.

Stacia -  Emma Watson

Okay – the world might know her as Hermione Granger, but I see her as Stacia.  Especially with the short hair and the piercing looks she can give the camera.  Let’s face it-- no one would have a problem believing that she is smart enough to pass The Testing.

 Michal – Chace Crawford

If I was Cia I’d trust him to help me.   Wouldn’t you?

Will –  Thomas Brodie-Sangster

He’s got a smile that would charm anyone.  And I think he could play the multi-layered Will with a great deal of skill.

Dr. Barnes – Dennis Quaid

Dennis Quaid is one of my favorite actors.  He has THE BEST smile.  He is also the type you would automatically believed had your best interest at heart.  Or does he?

President Collindar – Sigourney Weaver

Okay – I admit that this is taking some liberties with the casting.  Afterall, President Collindar is described as having almond eyes and dark hair.  I always pictured her as someone of Asian decent, but Sigourney Weaver is an amazing actress and she’s tall.  With Cia’s short stature, I think having a President with some height could make for some really interesting scenes.  Of course…you’ll have to read Independent Study and Graduation Day to know what those scenes are…

Raffe – Alexander Ludwig

Another controversial choice since he appeared as Cato in The Hunger Games movie.  However, I would argue that he didn’t get near enough to do in that movie and that he is perfect for Raffe.  (Who appears in Independent Study.)

Symon – Ralph Fiennes

Another Independent Study character.  He could totally rock this role.  Trust me!

Damone – Tyler Posey

I think he’d make for an intriguing choice.

 Professor Holt – Joanna Gleason

Since seeing her appear as The Baker’s Wife in Stephen Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS, I have loved Joanna Gleason.  She has the ability to stop everything in a scene with just one glance.  She’d be awesome.  And, truth be told, I’d love to have an excuse to meet herJ

Thanks Joelle love the cast especially who you cast for Raffe! Love that guy :D
