ELLE RUSH – TINSEL AND TEACUPS – (Excerpt)

Welcome to Christmas in Holiday Beach, where snow is on the ground and romance is in the air! TINSEL AND TEACUPS is a collection of four Christmas romances to bring some holiday cheer to your e-reader (or nightstand if you prefer paperbacks.)

Here’s a peek at from the titular novella “Tinsel and Teacups”, about a barista, a single dad, and a Christmas teacup battle for the ages…

***

Tina tapped her finger against her chin. “There’s always Owen Daye. He’s really cute. He’s employed. He drives a nice car. Also, he’s new in town. Since he didn’t grow up here, you can’t know any of his bad habits.”

“I know one,” Rachel muttered under her breath. A new bachelor in Holiday Beach was cause for lots of gossip, and after Rachel’s first look at him, she hadn’t minded listening to all the stories. A divorced dad with custody of a young son. He hadn’t grown up in town, but he had visited regularly as a kid. He had a head for business and had stepped right up to managing Golden Daye Antiques. On paper, he looked like a catch.

Fortunately, the bell over the door jingled, and Tina was distracted by the woman who just entered. “Rachel, I love the new window display. The stained-glass look is awesome,” Brooke Portman said.

“Thanks, Brooke. I think Mac did a great job,” she said in agreement.

“Did you see what Golden Daye Antiques did?”

Rachel breathed deeply, visions of her teacup on display dancing in her head. “No.”

“They let little Richie design a window by himself for Christmas. That’s what the sign says anyway, and I believe it after meeting the kid. It’s definitely a preschooler’s version of Santa’s library. Lots of green, lots of red, lots of books and toys,” Brooke said.

“I’ll have to go take a look,” Rachel said, trying not to let her annoyance for the father transfer to what sounded like an adorable effort from his son.

“You can talk to Owen about it at the Chamber of Commerce meeting tonight,” Tina said. “You know, use it as an icebreaker.”

“About what?”

“A date,” Tina tattled.

“Are you interested in Owen?” Brooke asked. “He seems sweet. He came to Aaron’s birthday party. Do you think he could steal—”

“—my heart with those amazing green eyes of his?” Rachel finished. “No way.”

“I was going to say steal away for a date so close to Christmas, but yours works too.” Brooke winked and grabbed her coffee. “See you next week.”

“You noticed that Owen has green eyes, did you?” Tina asked knowingly.

“I’m sorry, I’m much too busy with all the customers to answer questions about my lack of a social life,” Rachel said, sticking her tongue out at her friend just before a horde of seniors descended on the counter.

The gift of magic may be a curse.

After her desert-transforming wish, Emel follows Saalim to Madinat Almulihi to reclaim all she has lost. But the seaside city is not what she expected. When she is tasked with assisting the palace healer, she is faced daily with the reminder that Saalim―focused only on seeking the revenge of those who killed his family―does not remember her at all.

Cursing the magic that destroyed her love and brought her to an unwelcoming city, Emel regrets her decision to leave her settlement. That is, until she meets Kas. Though inscrutable, he is the first person to help her forget her past, and the pull of finding happiness with him tempts her from the life she wished for with Saalim.

But darkness waits in the desert, and not all people in Madinat Almulihi are what they seem. When Emel understands she is entangled in the fate of the city―and of Saalim―she is faced with the realization that magic may be the most powerful card in her hand. It might be the only way to save all that she loves, but if she plays her hand wrong, it could destroy everything.

Grab book 1, DAUGHTER OF THE SALT KING now!

Exclusive Excerpt:

This excerpt is told from Saalim’s point of view early in the book. He and Emel are on the palace balcony.

The wind whipped up, swirling around us and fluttering the dress around her ankles so that I could just glimpse that she wore slippers on her feet. No sandals. She pushed back from the edge with the gust, fear widening her eyes. Her hair was fashioned similar to my sisters’ who spent far too long with their reflections twisting their hair and placing it just so. It had seemed like such waste to use time so frivolously, but seeing Emel with her hair spun around her head and dress swept down around her like a bird’s plumes made me reconsider. Perhaps it was not so needless. Another gust of wind and the scarf fell from her shoulders.

My eyes, greedy for more, dropped to her shoulder. I paused. Stretching over her skin were dark scars, shining in the light. The trails of at least five lashes. They were not the scars of a laborer, someone who had been in a horrible accident. They were the scars of disobedience, put there intentionally.

I gasped. What could a daughter of a king have done to warrant the punishment?

She looked at me suddenly. When she saw my face, her brow furrowed, and she reached up to her neck, fingers closing over the tapering ends of the scars. Slowly, she backed away, pulling the scarf tightly over her shoulders, just as my mother used to do. But my mother was not hiding scars.

“Was it worth it?” I asked.

Her face softened. What was she remembering? It wasn’t the pain of the whip, the itch of the healing wounds. No, she was remembering what she had done to earn them.

“He is,” she said before she walked away.

Ianthe was only six years old when her mother vanished and the strange statue appeared in the river near her home. Now, eleven years later, the statue stands as a memorial and a place where Ianthe often visits to tell her mother about her life. But when an old acquaintance returns to town and suggests the statue isn't just a statue, the presence of a mythical creature comes into question, and Ianthe begins to wonder what really happened all those years ago.

With her best friend Fintan by her side, Ianthe searches for a lost legend and discovers fantastical dangers, family secrets, and the magic of Ireland. But finding the myth may not be enough to mend the past. And finding the truth just may threaten her future.

May you have the hindsight to know where you've been, the foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far- Irish proverb

Mother of the River, chapter two excerpt

Ianthe slid a cup and scone to her side of the small table and slathered butter onto the bread while Dubheasa eyed her carefully.

“Well then,” Dubheasa said, thankfully moving on to a new topic, “when did we last see each other, dear? Do you remember?”

“Um.” Ianthe paused to take a bite of her scone. “Two summers ago, I think.”

“And has much changed since then?” Dubheasa asked, stirring cream into her tea.

“Besides growing a bit taller, nothing at all.”

“Well, I’m glad to see you’re still here.”

“Why wouldn’t I be here?”

Dubheasa sipped her tea and waited for Ianthe to come to some sort of conclusion, but Ianthe stared back, lost as ever.

“Well, the Scréch Sídhe, of course,” Dubheasa finally said.

Ianthe couldn’t help but subtly roll her eyes, feeling a sliver of annoyance in her gut.

“Oh, right. Of course,” she said flatly. “How could I forget.”

“You still don’t believe in the Sídhe, do you?” Dubheasa asked, though she already knew the answer.

“No, I must admit. I don’t.”

“If you don’t mind me asking, why is that?”

“You told me the Scréch Sídhe would come for me after my mother disappeared, but it’s been eleven years. Do you really believe a magical faerie would need this much time to find a person?”

Dubheasa continued to sip her tea with squinted eyes before offering another question.

“Then how do you think your mother turned to stone?”

“Oh, this again?” Ianthe said, reminding herself a bit of her dad. “My mother didn’t turn to stone.”

“I’ve seen her, Ianthe. I know she stands in the river.”

“I’ve told you,” Ianthe said, dropping her hands to the table and rattling the teacups. “My father had that statue made in remembrance of her. It’s not actually her.”

“And yet, he never visits her to remember her.”

“N—no, you’ve got it wrong, Dubheasa. My mother disappeared.”

“And disappearing into thin air is a more acceptable explanation for you?” Dubheasa asked, studying Ianthe’s face.

“Certainly more acceptable than ‘cursed by a faerie’,” she said in a failed whisper.

Nothing frightens Atticus Everheart more than monsters, thanks to his older brothers, who often threaten to feed him to the beastly creatures.

Fearing that’s what they will do if he doesn’t replace the book he accidentally ruined, he takes a job tutoring a boy in his neighborhood.

Although nervous about the job, Atticus soon discovers there’s a lot more in store for him than teaching. Never in a trillion years would he have imagined he’d be hiding from monsters, working with ghosts, or searching for werewolves and witches. He’s not brave, and he has no plans to change.

Until he’s forced to.

Atticus Everheart, Fifth Grade Tutor and Monster Hunter?

Excerpt #1:

Atticus watched Drago argue with the empty chair. The word batty came to mind again. Atticus squashed the thought. Challenging—isn’t that what the ad had said? Atticus would use the word challenging to describe Drago. Although, if Drago couldn’t spell ‘home’ he wouldn’t be able to spell ‘challenging’, which was probably a blessing in disguise. If Atticus kept asking Drago to spell words he could use to describe his student, Drago would catch on, and Atticus doubted Drago would cooperate if he knew Atticus gave him unflattering nicknames.

“Come on, one terrifying scream.” Drago pleaded with the rocking chair.

The chair swayed and the floorboards creaked. Drago must have bumped it. Empty rocking chairs didn’t rock back and forth on their own. But to be sure, Atticus flipped down the blue monocle. The rocking chair was empty. Of course, it is. He switched from blue to crimson. No monsters either. He raised the lens.

Drago had moved in front of the window.

“Then fly through him.” He threw his hands in the air. “Well, at least show yourself.” Drago really thought his grandmother sat in the chair. Poor kid. Atticus knew what it felt like to miss a grandparent. He closed his mouth, walked up to the rocking chair, and said, “It’s very nice to meet you, Ms. Mina.”

Drago pinned the air between him and Atticus with a narrow-eyed stare. “If you’d show yourself, he’d know he was talking to an empty chair.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” said Atticus, playing along. “Is she standing now?”

“This is hopeless.” Drago faced Atticus. “Fine, I’ll take your pretest. Happy?”

”Yes!” Now they were getting somewhere. He glanced down at the list he’d brought and decided to try a more advanced word. “Can you spell poison?”

“There’s an idea.” Only, instead of spelling the word, Drago squawked, “What?” Then he pivoted on his heels until he faced the opposite way and sprinted toward the stairs.

“Not again,” moaned Atticus. He hiked his backpack higher up on his back and hurried after his student.

About C.L. Colyer:

C.L. Colyer found her love for writing in first grade when her class was sent to the library and asked to find a book for their first book report. While she doesn’t still have this book report, she’s very proud to say she got an A on it. Her favorite thing about the book was that it had no words. That’s right, not one! That gave her the freedom to interpret the pictures in any way she wanted and write her own story.

This sparked her love for writing essays. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she sat down and penned her first novel. This story has a special place in her heart because it’s the story that helped her discover her passion for writing. She has since written several books, many of which may never see the light of day, but all of which helped her learn to combine her passion for writing with her fascination with all things mythical. You’ll find examples of this in her novels.

Her alter ego writes stories for teens and adults under Cherie Colyer.
