Two friends. One pact. The performance of their lives.

Hannah Abbott is stuck in a dead-end relationship and at a job she loves but that barely pays the bills. The four walls of her tiny New York City apartment have never seemed so small. She’s barely toasted her thirtieth birthday when her old college friend Will knocks on her door with an unexpected proposal.

Will Thorne never forgot the marriage pact he made with Hannah, but he also never imagined he’d be the one to initiate it. One ex-fiancĂ©e and an almost-career-ending mistake later, however, he finds himself outside Hannah’s door, on bended knee, to collect on their graduation-night pinky promise.

With both of their futures at stake, Hannah and Will take a leap of faith.

Now, all they have to do is convince their friends and family that they’re madly in love. As long as they follow the list of rules they’ve drafted, everything should go smoothly. Except Will has never been good with rules, and Hannah can’t stop overthinking the sleeping arrangements. Turning thirty has never been so promising.

Excerpt:

Hannah’s eyes widened at the boulder-sized princess cut diamond in front of her. Her heart dropped—Brian. A few hours ago, she’d been debating breaking up with him. Was he really proposing on the dirty hallway floor? Hannah blinked rapidly, trapping tears she knew were coming. She’d brought up engagement six months ago. He’d scoffed and disappeared for a week, reemerging with a tan and few apologies. But here he was on bended knee. She turned her attention from the ring to the man kneeling in front of her—the man who was not Brian.

She took in the older, leaner version of the boy she had once known. Memories flooded her brain—study sessions, drunken nights, Wilderness concerts, a graduation-night kiss, and finally, the image of him draped over yet another girl, this one in a bridesmaid dress.

“William Thorne,” she said derisively. Her body buzzed, adrenaline coursing through her. She’d wanted it to be Brian—for him to have finally figured out that he wanted her for more than just the foreseeable future.

She turned her attention back to Will. He remained on one knee but had lowered the ring. A smile, halfway between questioning and amused, played across his face. “This is amazingly uncomfortable. Why do people propose like this?”

“Knights, courting, et cetera and so forth,” Hannah said absently, waving him into her apartment. She peeked around the door, but fortunately, it was late enough that the hallway was empty.

Will stood, pocketed the ring, and came in hesitantly despite his initial grand entrance. Hannah watched his eyes travel around the room, taking in the small clues littered throughout the apartment before focusing on her laptop, which still had a picture of the two of them open. Great first impression.

“You seem surprised to see me,” he said, turning his full attention and the power of his perfect smile on her.

She should’ve felt surprise at Will’s sudden appearance, but she didn’t. And not just because she’d just gotten a friend request from him—this was completely and utterly a Will thing to do. And really, she should’ve been expecting him.

“Well, you are a day late.” On top of the last half a decade. Even as Hannah thought it, she knew she had a hand in those lost years. In the end, it wouldn’t matter—not for them. They would still be Will and Hannah. She knew it, and by the contented expression on Will’s face, he knew it too.

About Casey Dembowski:

Casey Dembowski loves to write stories that focus on the intricacies of relationships--whether they be romantic, familial, or friendship. Her novels focus on the inner workings of women and how everything in their lives leads them to exactly where they are, whether they like it or not.

BOOKBUNDANT IS WHAT TO READ BEFORE YOU READ

Bookbundant is launching two new and innovative book promotion newsletters specializing in romance and mystery thriller books that share limited time book sales with a subscriber base of avid readers looking for their next favorite book.

Bookbundant tells subscribers when books go on sale, or are available as a limited time freebie, on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, and Google.

How is Bookbundant different from other promotional newsletters? We think outside of the cubicle. Readers don’t want to be sold to in a businesslike fashion - even on sales. They want to be entertained.

Bookbundant’s selection of books is highly curated from the submissions received, showcasing only the best.

The Bookbundant newsletter is fun and stylish. It’s not the same every day. Each has its own style and modern aesthetic — with memes, book and author facts, etc. Community Corner highlights others in the book industry; interviews with authors, publishers, bloggers, sharing photos of bookstagrammers, etc. to support, inspire and excite.

We wanted to give authors a powerful place to promote their books, and budget-conscious readers a way to save money, in a newsletter people actually want to open. We’ve seen a decline in the efficacy of other promotional sites. We saw a niche we could fill and have the passion to do things in a new and refreshing way.” – Kate Barnes, Co-Founder and CEO

Title: THE PHYSICS OF GRIEF

Author: Mickey J. Corrigan

Pub. Date: April 22, 2021

Publisher: QuoScript UK

Pages: 210

Formats: Paperback, eBook

Seymour, a down-and-out former teacher and semi-alcoholic who is haunted by the death of his girlfriend, tells the story of how he lifted himself out of grief and apathy. The catalyst is a mystery man - Raymond C. Dasher - who enters Seymour's life via a chance encounter and persuades him to accept a job as a professional griever. A series of adventures follow, some macabre, some sinister, some extremely funny, as Seymour encounters an improbably diverse but highly credible set of characters united only by the fact that all are interacting in some way with death. Most complex is Milton Lasker, a former mobster whose relationship with Seymour is ambivalent, to say the least - even his overtures of help are terrifying. But then there's Yvonne, who reminds Seymour what it's like to feel alive. The Physics of Grief is a unique, quirky crime novel presenting the upside of funerals and a hopeful look at second chances - and at death.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything," the man said. "I've seen you in here a few times this week and … if I may be frank? You look like you need something to do. It just so happens I have a bit of work that might interest you."

His lips smiled while his eyes stared out coldly from some unknowable interior space. In the crowded café, he was closer to me than the pandemic six-feet regulation allowed, but that didn't faze me. At this point in my life, an early visit from the grim reaper would've been welcome.

"Shall I tell you about the job?" he asked.

His solicitous demeanor gave me the kind of creeps I got around priests and undertakers. For good reason, it turned out. The man slid his business card across the stained Formica table. Raymond C. Dasher, Professional Grievers, Inc. was printed on a laminated white card with a local phone number in the same basic block font.

"Here's how it works," Raymond said. "My service is unique, and I have built my reputation on the promise of complete discretion. My clients come to me reluctantly when they are desperate for help, desperate enough to pay top dollar for my services. And with what do I provide them? I provide them with peace of mind at a time of utmost vulnerability. I provide them with a means of exiting the stage to a standing ovation. A way to say farewell with the kind of royal fanfare they think they deserve. Especially now that funerals are less populated. In the modern era, virus or no virus, we should give the dying whatever they desire. Don't you agree?"

He glanced around us at the café crowd and smiled in a patronizing way before he continued to pontificate. "In Nigeria when a relative dies you shave your head and refuse to answer the telephone. Can you imagine anyone in our society willing to make such a sacrifice? In certain Australian tribes after the death of a spouse the widow never speaks again. She uses sign language for the rest of her life. No American wife would ever consider shutting up to mourn the loss of her husband." He shook his head in disapproval. "The Canadian Ojibwa would pour ashes on their heads after a loved one died, and the men pushed knives, needles, or thorns through the skin of their chests and arms. The LoDagaa of Ghana are said to bind up the relatives of the deceased in order to restrain their grief. Many cultures once buried alive those closest to the recently departed. Women and slaves were walled up in tombs, some with a view of the church conducting the funeral. Victorians dressed in black and behaved like living monuments to the dead for years afterward."

The café manager wore a thick double mask. He circled, waiting to come in for the kill. He wanted his table back. When he flapped the check at me, I waved him away. "Go on," I said to Raymond.

Excerpt From: Nina Crespo. “An Officer and a Fortune”

Weaving through the growing crowd at the outdoor market, Nicole glanced left and right. Just as she was about to give up her search, she spotted the herbs and a host of leafy green vegetables. Harris Farms...that was the vendor she was looking for.

But the baskets were almost empty.

Picking up the pace, Nicole moved to the side, squeezing between the people strolling down the center aisle and the ones perusing items at the stalls.

Almost there...

A few steps from the table, a dark-haired woman cut in front of Nicole and set down the numerous full bags she’d been carrying at her feet. Leaning over the table, she blocked the rosemary basket as she flagged down the vendor. “Do you have more basil? What’s out here is wilted.”

“Pardon me.” Nicole tried to snag some of the rosemary, but the woman calling out to the vendor wouldn’t budge.

Releasing a sigh of frustration, Nicole scooted around her, battling the crowd like a salmon swimming upstream. By the time she made it to the other side of the woman, only one bunch of rosemary tied with a thin red band remained.

As she reached for it, a familiar woodsy cologne and alluring body heat surrounded her like an embrace. Distracted from the basket, she glanced left at the guy standing there. It was him.

Stunning coppery eyes met hers, and her thoughts short-circuited, leaving her mouth momentarily uncensored. “You are so...” She barely swallowed the rest of her sentence, preventing it from slipping out. Gorgeous.

“I’m what?” He picked up the last of the rosemary. The corners of his eyes crinkled slightly as his mouth quirked up with a quizzical smile.

Nicole pointed to the tied bunch of herbs in his hand. “You are so lucky. That’s the last one.”

“It is? I guess I am.” The deep tone of his voice settled inside of Nicole, making her tingle from the inside out. As he held her gaze, she couldn’t bring herself to look away.

Stop staring! What was wrong with her? She was acting like he was the first sinfully hot guy she’d ever laid eyes on.

His gaze moved from her face to her free hand, still hovering in the air.

She snatched up some parsley.

Okay, it wasn’t what she came for, but she’d looked silly just standing there practically drooling over him…

Here are the puzzle clues. Answer these then find the words in the word search puzzle. Words can go in any direction.

1. "You are so..."

2. Leafy green________

3. The officer

4. Type of market

5. The Fortune

6. Herb they all wanted

Excerpt

We faced each other for a beat or two. Then he placed his arm around my shoulder and took my hand in his, positioning his body a respectable distance away. We danced, slow and reserved at first, but as the singer’s wails intensified, so did Charlie’s moves. His hips swayed from side to side, and he inched closer to me, smidgen by smidgen, until his pelvis ground against my hipbones.

Our bodies melded, moving together in perfect synchronicity. Side to side. Back and forth. He moved his hand to my lower back and pulled me closer. I took in a quick, sharp breath. He

“You know, baby,” he murmured, “You and me have more than chemistry. We have fire. Not the easy kind of fire you can make from a box of matches, but the kind of fire you get when you rub two sticks together. I’m all yours if you want me.”

The world around me blurred as if I were watching it through thick lenses. I imagined Charlie’s lips against mine. I imagined him shirtless, propped above me, his triceps bulging as he slowly lowered his chest—mine rising toward his, beckoning him closer. He groaned a low animal-like sound. It drew me to him.

And I wanted him bad.

I wanted our bodies to burn in Hell together for all eternity.

What was happening? Had I lost my mind? I wasn’t ready. Was I?

No.

Spasms of panic surged from my loins to the deepest recesses in my brain. In a sharp snap, the imaginary lenses cracked, and through the broken glass was a clear image of a boy with kind eyes and a halo of yellow hair.

Keir was my angel, and I was dancing with the devil. A devil who would betray his brother. A devil who would convince me to betray him as well.

I shuddered and pressed my free hand, fiercely against his shoulder. He clutched me tighter.

“Charlie, please. We can’t do this.”

“Why not?” he demanded.

I took in a long, ragged breath. “Because I don’t want to hurt Keir. He likes me.”

He forced a laugh and loosened his grip. My hand  slipped from his, and he leaned toward me. His chin brushed against my cheek, and flesh bumps shimmied down my spine.

“That was the right answer, New Jersey,” he whispered in a throaty voice. “Welcome to the gang.”

Excerpt:

I hadn’t expected that. And I wasn’t sure I wanted to respond. The old me, the good girl from New Jersey, wouldn’t have choked. She would have told Charlie to take a hike. But the new me didn’t want to let him go.

What was it about this strange boy with greased hair that attracted me so?

“What’s the matter, New Jersey? Cat got your tongue?”

My face flushed. “Why don’t you quit asking me ridiculous questions and do something that you’re good at?”

“What’s that?”

“Drive, Teddy Boy.”

One of Charlie’s brows tipped upward in a cocky salute. His knuckles whitened as he gripped the T-shifter, while rivers of veins formed on his muscular forearm. With a look of steely determination etched on his face, he slammed the shifter into first gear and jammed the accelerator pedal to the floor. The car rocketed forward. My head slammed against the seatback, and I dug my nails into the black tuck and roll upholstery.

“You scared, New Jersey?” Charlie asked, his eyes aflame.

“No,” I said as the blood left my face.

“Then hang on, baby, ’cause you’re about to go for the ride of your life.”
