From the author of Edgar Award finalist Grit and The Lies They Tell comes a tense, atmospheric novel for fans of E. Lockhart and Marieke Nijkamp, about friendship, truth, and the creeping fears that can't be outrun.

Whenever another kid goes missing in October, the kids in the old factory town of Pender know what is really behind it: a monster out in the marshes that they call the Mumbler.

That's what Clara's new crew tells her when she moves to town. Bree and Sage, who take her under their wing. Spirited Trace, who has taken the lead on this year's Halloween prank war. And magnetic Kincaid, whose devil-may-care attitude and air of mystery are impossible for Clara to resist.

Clara doesn't actually believe in the Mumbler--not like Kinkaid does. But as Halloween gets closer and tensions build in the town, it's hard to shake the feeling that there really is something dark and dangerous in Pender. Lurking in the shadows. Waiting to bring the stories to life.
Excerpt:
“It’s sad, you coming here.” Kincaid takes me in, his smile fading. “Now you’ve got no chance.”

No chance. Like he read it in my tea leaves or the lines of my palm. “Why?”

“Because he only takes Pender kids. Likes our taste, I guess.” Kincaid drops his board, glides backward on one foot, never breaking eye contact. “Like . . . hopelessness.”

“And Steak-umms from the caf,” somebody says, making people snicker.

“Liver.” Trace shows his teeth. “God, I love that shit.”

“What about Gavin Cotswold?” Sage says. “Have they figured out how he died yet?”

“Mumbler got him.” Trace.

“He OD’d.” Bree gives Trace a withering look. “He went out in the woods, got fucked up, and died. His own mom thinks so.”

“I heard the animals didn’t leave enough of him behind to be sure.” Trace says. Then, to Kincaid, “Tell her about the first boy. Ricky Whoever.”

“Sartain. Ricky Sartain.” Behind Kincaid, most of the activity has stopped, everybody pulling up some concrete to listen. He’s holding court, a storyteller who knows his audience. “It all started, like, twenty years ago. Kid went missing two days before they found him on the banks of the marsh, way out by the railroad bridge.” Kincaid nods slowly, easing into it. “Somebody put their hands all over him.”

More covert laughter, Trace’s whisper: “Loved to death.”

Kincaid entwines his fingers, working his palms together in sinuous rhythm. “Squeezed him, crushed him. Mashed his spine, smashed his belly.”

A voice speaks up: “My mom said that kid got hit by the train.”

“Of course she did.” Kincaid doesn’t turn. “She also told you that Santa Claus is real and honesty is the best policy and if you’re good, you’ll get into heaven, right?”

Snorts. Somebody mimics, “But my mommy said,” whacking the boy who interrupted with a baseball cap.

“He was folded in half.” Sage grips Trace’s forearm. “That’s what I heard.”

“No.” Kincaid’s hands are tai chi slow. “Lengthwise.”

“Stop.” Bree says it under her breath; I’m the only one who hears.

“Ricky disappeared right around Halloween. That’s the pattern.” Kincaid skates a circuit around us, dismounts, and slaps the tail of the board so it pops into his hand again, all one smooth movement that I wish I could watch again frame by frame. “Truth. After, Ricky’s friends told everybody how they’d all gone out to the railroad bridge to smash pumpkins one night, and there was somebody hiding under there. Too dark to see, but they heard him, mumbling and yammering away.”

Yip, yip, yip! I look up to see audience participation, lumbering shapes aping around the others, sounding like a zoo after hours—Ahhh-ah-ah-ah! Mwaaa-hoohoo!

“Next time anybody saw Ricky, he was red guacamole.” Kincaid pauses, smiling faintly, but he’s not really seeing me now. “Ever since, Mumbler’s been around. Takes a bad kid every few years, always in October. Grown-ups have some bullshit excuse for what happened to them, but we know.”

Nods pass around the circle. I watch for inside looks—they’ll drop the act when they see I’m not taken in—but the quiet drags on. “What’s the Mumbler look like?” I hold
Kincaid’s gaze, willing him to let me in on this, let me prove I don’t scare easy. “So I’ll know him if I see him.”

Kincaid looks to Trace, again with the smile that creases his eyes into merry slits, a kid showing his little sister where Mom hides the Christmas presents. “We can take you to him.”

Cover Reveal- DANGEROUS ALLIANCE By Jennieke Cohen

Today Jennieke Cohen, Epic Reads, and Rockstar Book Tours are revealing the cover and a note from Jennieke about the cover for DANGEROUS ALLIANCE, her debut YA Historical Book which releases on December 3, 2019! Check out the awesome cover and enter the giveaway!

On to the reveal!

Title: DANGEROUS ALLIANCE
Author: Jennieke Cohen
Pub. Date: December 3, 2019
Publisher: HarperTeen
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Pages: ?
Find it: Goodreads, Amazon

Lady Victoria Aston has always been just as comfortable in a pair of breeches stolen from her father as she has in satin ballgowns decked in lace. And though she is perfectly capable of minding her manners in polite society, she doesn't much see the point. With an older sister happily wed and the future of her family estate secure, she is quite content to while her time away in the fields around her home.

However, Vicky’s comfortable, idyllic life is overturned in the course of one night. Her sister’s husband is a terrible cad and now Vicky must marry, or find herself and her family destitute. Armed only with the wisdom she has gained from her beloved novels by Jane Austen, she enters society’s season in a flutter of silks, dances, and pretty words.

But Miss Austen has little to say about Vicky’s particular circumstances: whether the gorgeous and roguish Mr. Carmichael is indeed a scoundrel, if her former best friend—the much-grown and very handsome Tom Sherborne—is out for her dowry or for her heart, or even how to fend off the attentions of the foppish Mr. Silby, he of the bright-orange waistcoat.

Most unfortunately of all, Vicky’s books are silent on the topic of the mysterious accidents cropping up around her. Accidents that have her wondering if there’s someone trying to prevent a match from being made…or prevent her from surviving until her wedding day.

Note about the cover from Jennieke:

When I got the concept art for DANGEROUS ALLIANCE’s cover, I was thrilled with what designer Jessie Gang had come up with.

I’m a little like Elle Woods from Legally Blonde in that pink is my signature color, so the palette was just what I’d hoped for. When the final cover made it to my inbox, my heart sped up as I saw how it had all come together. The artist, Kasi Turpin, did a beautiful job creating the font and I just love how the line through the “A” forms the top of an upside down heart and draws attention to the tagline.

The cameo silhouette also happens to be perfect for my main character, Vicky, while still allowing readers to picture her for themselves! I can’t wait to see what it looks like on the shelves, and I hope people love it as much as I do!

A darkly hilarious contemporary realistic young adult novel about growing up and finding your place in the world, perfect for fans of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Running With Scissors.

Dario Heyward knows one thing: He’s never going back to Moldavia Studios, the iconic castle that served as the set, studio, and home to the cast and crew of dozens of cult classic B-horror movies. It’s been three years since Dario’s even seen the place, after getting legally emancipated from his father, the infamous director of Moldavia’s creature features.

But then Dario’s brother invites him home to a mysterious ceremony involving his father and a tribute to his first film—The Curse of the Mummy’s Tongue. Dario swears his homecoming will be a one-time visit. A way for him to get closure on his past—and reunite with Hayley, his first love and costar of Zombie Children of the Harvest Sun, a production fraught with real-life tragedy—and say good-bye for good. But the unthinkable happens—Dario gets sucked back into the twisted world of Moldavia and the horrors, both real and imagined, he’s left there.

With only months to rescue the sinking studio and everyone who has built their lives there, Dario must confront the demons of his past—and the uncertainties of his future. But can he escape the place that’s haunted him his whole life?

Now on to the excerpt!

Chapter 1: Return to Moldavia
Slightly before dinner, Keenan House, the group home where I live, gets a call that my homosexual exorcism is scheduled to take place next Thursday at four.
“But I’m not homosexual. And I’m not possessed,” I say to Len, my counselor.
“You sure?” says Len. He cracks open a PBR and takes a long, gurgling sip.
“Bet you’re both,” says my roommate, Jude, lacing up his boxing gloves.
“Actually,” says Len, belching, softly punching his gut, “I think it’s your brother calling.”
Oren. Of course.
Late-afternoon sunlight smears across the cinder-block walls through broken, yellowed blinds. I throw down my graphic novel, which I was actually half enjoying, and roll out of my sagging lower bunk with a groan. I walk down the hall and grab the phone.
“Why are you calling me?”
“’Cause I know you have lots of homo demons inside you,” says Oren, stifling one of his loud, chirpy laughs. “And I thought maybe it was time for a devil cleanse.”
“Uh-huh.” I hear projected voices in the background—like announcements on a PA or something. “Where are you?”
“Hospital.”
“What?”
“We’re burying Dad next week. Funeral is Thursday.”
“Dad died?”
“No, no.”
My dad has been slowly dying for forty years. Emphysema, hairy cell leukemia, diabetes, arthritis; it’s like he just went shopping one day for chronic diseases and never made any returns. More recently, he’s been sliding into dementia.
Thing is, this might really be it. The doctors are pretty sure. “He has two weeks max,” says Oren.
“Shit.” I bite my thumbnail—an old nervous habit instantaneously reborn. I’m suddenly terrified that my family, who I was legally emancipated from three years ago, might be planning something deeply, morbidly insane. But it’s not as bad as all that.
Just a live funeral.
“A what?” The phone slips out of my hands. I juggle it back to my ear.

“Dad’s final wish was to be buried alive,” says Oren.

The peace is unsustainable.

Sonya and Anton may have brought about a revolution, but can they protect their homeland—and their love—with so many forces threatening to tear them apart?

The empire has fallen, Valko faces trial, and Sonya is finally free from her fate as Sovereign Auraseer. But Sonya's expanding abilities are just as unstable as the new government of Riaznin—and her relationship with Anton. Not only can she feel the emotions of others but, unlike other Auraseers, she's learned to make others feel her emotions as well. And Sonya isn't immune to dark temptations.

Now, as Sonya fights to contain her own darkness, she senses a new evil lurking in the shadows of the palace. Someone from Sonya's past has returned. And that someone won't be satisfied until Sonya pays for the mistakes she's made.

Now on to the interview!

Hey Kathryn!! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! CRYSTAL BLADE was freaking AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!
Thanks for hosting me! I’m so happy you loved CRYSTAL BLADE!
So… Book 3? Any news on that front? Like a title maybe?
I can’t share the title yet, but I have finished the first draft. It’s very different from the other two books, and a big chunk of the story takes place in a completely new setting with a new castle. I loved writing this conclusion to Sonya’s story!
Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
No, I’ve honestly never based a character off of a real-life person, but I do steal lots of traits, quirks, phrases, mannerisms, etc. from people I know in order to make my characters more authentic.
Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
Valko was my favorite to write in CRYSTAL BLADE! He did this one bizarre thing to try to claim ownership over Sonya that was so surprising and fun to add in. I love to hate him! Anton, although I swoon over him, was the hardest to write in this book. I had to do a lot of revising to get his journey right. I’m very happy with how he turned out--and where he’ll go in book three!
What is your favorite passage/scene in CRYSTAL BLADE?
There are two scenes in CRYSTAL BLADE where Valko goes on trial for his crimes as a tyrannical emperor, and Sonya is called to testify as a judge of his character with her ability as an empath and from her experiences with him in BURNING GLASS, and she really does a 180 in each of those scenes, especially the second scene. It was so exciting to write the build-up to those moments and then execute them.
What kind of research did you have to do for the story?
I researched a lot about Roma and nomadic people, since they are much more on the page in this book compared to BURNING GLASS. Sonya’s best friend, Tosya, is Roma (“Romska” in my book), and Sonya was raised by the nomads, so I wanted to make sure I was both sensitive and authentic when writing about a very marginalized people like the Roma.
Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?
The Darkling in SHADOW AND BONE. I love him, I hate him, I feel bad for him. Leigh Bardugo is brilliant. That is all. Swoon!
What inspired you to write YA?
There was no YA category in bookstores when I was growing up, and I went through a long spell as an adult reader where I was super disillusioned with fiction. Then YA popped up out of nowhere, and I found myself devouring books and being so in love with reading again. I just connect to writing about teenagers so much more. I still feel seventeen at heart, and I love writing about firsts--first love, first loss, first experience with death, etc. Teenagers also feel things so much bigger than adults do, and I love that extra drama when I read and write.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?
BEFORE SHE IGNITES by Jodi Meadows. LOVE! I’m totally invested in Mira and her journey.
RISE OF FIRE by Sophie Jordan is next on my TBR list. I finally read REIGN OF SHADOWS (book one) this year, and I love it so much! It’s like Rapunzel meets THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH. I can’t wait to see what happens in the sequel.
What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?
Hufflepuff. I’m a total softy at heart.
Twitter or Facebook?
Facebook! Twitter can be overwhelming for me if I’m on too long.
Favorite Superhero?
Wonder Woman! She’s so empowering.
Favorite TV show?
TURN. It’s about a spy ring during the Revolutionary War. So awesome!
Sweet or Salty?
Both. Bring on the kettle corn!
Any Phobias?
Crickets. They jump. Hard to catch. Still trying to forget the nights I woke up as a child and found crickets on my bedspread. Oh, the horror!
Song you can’t get enough of right now?
“Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man
2017 movie you’re most looking forward to?
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. It has an awesome cast, and I love a good mystery!
Thanks so much Kathryn for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read CRYSTAL BLADE!

You’re welcome! Thanks again for having me and for all your fun questions!

About Kathryn:
My love of storytelling began as a young girl when my dad told me, in his own words, the story of To Kill a Mockingbird while we listened to the film score together. Enchanted, I began my own attempts at storytelling, which usually led to home video productions featuring my younger sister as the nerd or maid, while I reserved the role of the glamorous movie star or princess.

In high school, I focused on acting and won first place in monologues at a prestigious statewide Shakespearean competition. When I wasn’t on the stage, I spent my time composing sappy poetry and completing at least ten pages in my journal every night. My author dad edited my school papers and taught me the art of writing. I went on to study acting in college and at The Oxford School of Drama in England. (All that character analysis transferred nicely to writing!)

The writing bug bit me when I was in recovery from donating a kidney to my older brother. I found my old stash of short stories, and the inspiration for my first novel struck. I’ve been writing ever since.

A lover of art in all forms, I also enjoy singing and playing the guitar. My husband is equally artistic. We keep busy raising three rambunctious and creative children.

I am represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary.
