Is this truly the End?

Exclusive Content!

The People of Ell Aye

Mayfly is set in the land of Ell Aye, a once-mighty city now in ruins. The old divisions of the past are gone, and in their place new peoples have emerged, each with their own origins and unique cultures.

The Angelenos
The dominant people of Ell Aye, they are a largely peaceful female-led society who live primarily in the hills. They are made of four interrelated peoples:

The Holy Wood
The oldest Angeleno settlement, on the shores of the Lake of the Holy Wood and the old Holy Wood sign.

The Malibu
The farthest west of the Angelenos, who live in the mountains next to the ocean of Malibu.

The Downtown
The Downtown guard the former towers of Ell Aye as sacred ground and live in a giant stadium in a ravine.

The San Fernandos
The San Fernandos live in the great valley north of the Holy Wood and frequently compete with the Holy Wood for scarce resources.

The Last Lifers
A feral band of Children who’ve gone mad in anticipation of their early deaths; they live throughout Ell Aye in violence and chaos because they fear no consequences.

The Palos (The Biters)
A cannibal society from the smoking Palos Verdes peninsula, they are Ell Aye’s most feared enemy. They are intelligent, vicious, and well armed.

The Ice Cream Men
A wandering tribe of traders who travel on three-wheeled ice cream carts, the Ice Cream Men know all the peoples in Ell Aye.

The Kingdom
A mighty civilization built by former gang members, the Kingdom occupies a huge castle fortress in Orange County, the OC.

Set against a future of marauding space scavengers and deadly aliens who kill with sound, here is a frightening, fast-paced YA adventure from the author of the acclaimed horror novel, Shutter.

Tuck has been in stasis on the USS John Muir, a ship that houses Earth’s most valued artifacts—its natural resources. Parks and mountains are preserved in space.

Laura belongs to a shipraiding family, who are funded by a group used to getting what they want. And they want what’s on the Muir.

Tuck and Laura didn’t bargain on working together or battling mutant aliens who use sound to kill. But their plan is the only hope for their crews, their families, and themselves.

In space, nobody can hear you scream . . . but on the John Muir, the screams are the last thing you'll hear.

Now on to the excerpt!

As I limp through the bulkhead, I hear my mother’s voice echoing through the bridge:
“. . . Find us.”

“Mami?” I call out, my spirits lifting. I hurry past the bulkhead. My hopes shatter like little sugar skulls when I see a projection of my mother shooting out of a portaScreen node placed on the floor, and not the woman in the flesh.

Mami’s image stands about as tall as she does in life, a compact five feet, five inches. I still remember the day I grew taller than her, and she grumbled about me taking after my father. Her bright aureole of bleached-blond curls glows like a saint’s halo in the portaScreen’s light. Mami looks bloodied, but the fierce cast of her eyes hasn’t changed a bit.

She survived the crash. Tears press against my eyes and I don’t bother to blink them away.

Beyond her, darkness looms. The Conquistador is wrenched open like an old tin can.

The bridge is busted, entire shears of metal are bent up like teeth in a prehistoric shark’s mouth, or rolled up in crazy spirals like snail shells. The Conquistador hit the John Muir so hard, the ships have merged together.

“Attention all crew and staff,” Mami’s projection says, straightening a bit. “For reasons we’re currently still investigating, the Conquistador has crashed and is presumed to be unsalvageable. Due to the failure of our bioware systems, those of you who didn’t make it into an emergency pod remain unaccounted for

Mami’s voice wobbles. She presses the back of her hand against her mouth, composing herself. I’ve never seen her even teeter on the brink of losing her composure, not once in my life.

“No, Mami,” I say to her image, taking a step toward her. It takes all my courage to suppress the fear rising through my chest. “Don’t tell me you left me here, alone.”

After a long moment, she composes herself. “I’ve taken the sixty-odd survivors into the John Muir, as the ship appears to have viable life support. Follow us. We’ll be marking our path every five meters with phosphorescent paint. We’ve left some supplies, including flashlights and shortwave radios.” Her image gestures to a now-empty box, which means I wasn’t the only crew member to be left behind. It was probably full of things Dad kept “on hand” because old-world tech could be useful in emergencies. But people like usprepared, professional, and practicedarent supposed to have emergencies.

My lip quivers.

I couldn’t be left behind, my family doesn’t leave people behind.

No.

From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer, comes a high-stakes world of adventure, passion, danger, and betrayal.

Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Now on to my costume!

I was going to search through Pinterest for my inspiration but then I remembered Marvel has a great set of sketches! This is my ideal costume based off of Spiderwoman’s new look!

Of course I'd remove the spider on the front but I love that this costume goes from normal looking to badass with just a zipper!

Dear Rachel Maddow,
I am writing to you because of a school assignment.  It’s a totally lame reason to be writing, but I don’t think you’ll actually read it anyway.  This kind of thing is so sixth grade.  I am a junior in high school and I’ve been forced to write to a “celebrity hero” by the Applied Language Arts teacher.  (Hey Mr. Grimm!  How’s it hanging, buddy?)  I wasn’t going to do it, because my ex-girlfriend worships you and, hello, school assignment.  But I turned on your show and Mom totally freaked out to see me watching you.  Apparently your liberal and leftist views don’t sit well with her.  Mom spat out the words like she was talking about my dad, so I knew she meant it.  That made you my celebrity hero.
You were talking about some guys running for congress.  But then you said one of them was “freaking amazing.”  I don’t think news people are supposed to say things like that.  And isn’t that biased?  News people aren’t supposed to be biased.  I know this because Mr. Grimm made us watch this video about newswriting.  Though no one else knows this about me, Rachel Maddow, I have a near photographic memory for stuff people say.  Their words just stick in my brain.  So I remember what a reporter is supposed to do.
Anyway, thanks for pissing off my Mom.
Sincerely,
Brynn Harper

Dear Rachel Maddow,
I am writing to you because of a school assignment.  It’s a totally lame reason to be writing, but I don’t think you actually read them anyway.  This kind of thing is so sixth grade.  [Brynn, this is good, honest writing.  Can you try to put a positive spin on it?]  I am a junior in high school and I’ve been forced [asked] to write to a “celebrity hero” by the Applied Language Arts teacher.  (Hey Mr. Grimm!  How’s it hanging, buddy?)  [I’m doing well, thanks.  But you can take this out.] I wasn’t going to do it, because my ex-girlfriend worships you and, hello, school assignment. And Mom totally freaked out to see me watching you.  Apparently your liberal and leftist views still don’t sit well with her.  Mom spat out the words like she was talking about my Dad, so I knew she meant it.  So that made you my celebrity hero.  [Again, great personal touch.  But maybe too intimate for this correspondence?]

[You are right, Brynn!  I didn’t know that about you.  Shouldn’t you remember your assignments, then?]
Anyway, thanks for pissing off my Mom. [There is a list of questions I asked you to include.  Maybe you could end with that instead.]

Subject:  School Assignment Again

Dear Rachel Maddow,
I learned an important lesson about rough drafts.  If you really want to send someone a letter, you should just send it.  Do not turn it in to your English teacher first.  But Mr. Grimm (said English teacher) is the only person I know who doesn’t think I’m hopeless, so I am trying this again for his sake.  Though I’m sending it to you too, to avoid further editing.
My name is Brynn Harper and I am sixteen years old.  I live with my mother and stepfather in Westing, Pennsylvania.  I have a brother, too.  Or, I had one, anyway.
I first watched your show a couple of times in high school because my best friend (well, okay, my girlfriend) loved you, so she kind of dragged me along with her.  She’s not my girlfriend anymore.  And she said she didn’t have time to watch television anymore either, even for you.  So she dumped us both.  That gives us something in common.
I had a list of questions that I was supposed to ask you, but I got most of the answers online already.  Mr. Grimm suggested I think of new ones.  So here you go:
1.      When you look at the papers on your desk and circle something, are you really reading from them?  Don’t you read from a teleprompter?  When you go to commercial, you shuffle those papers, too.  Seriously, is there anything even written on them?
2.      How much does a person have to know to be considered a “wonk?”
3.      At least one person laughs in the background while you are talking.  Is this on purpose?  Who is that?
4.      Why don’t you run for political office?
5.      Is there ever a staff meeting when you think to yourself, “Huh, there really isn’t a lot going on in the news today.”
6.      How many pairs of shoes do you actually own?

About Adrienne:

I have lived my entire “adult” life in a college dormitory working in both Residence Life and college chaplaincy.  I like the term "dormitory" better than "residence hall."  I went to school for a long time so that now I get to swoop around in a fancy robe and silly hat (like at Hogwarts).  I have an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts (a place like Hogwarts).  I play both the viola and tennis with more heart than skill.  I love my current home in Boston but will always be a Pennsylvanian at heart.

Hey everyone! I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for ALLY by Anna Banks! I adore Anna and her book!

I have an interview with Anna to share with you today! And make sure to enter the giveaway below!

Haven't heard of ALLY? Check it out!

Title: ALLY
Author: Anna Banks
Pub. Date: October 3, 2017

Princess Sepora of Serubel and King Tarik of Theoria have formed an uneasy truce between their kingdoms since the deadly plague began to rip through Theoria. Since their feelings for each other are entangled in politics and power, they must use their own trusted resources to find common ground.

But when traitors with powerful allies arise from unexpected places, Tarik and Sepora face challenges that will change both of their kingdoms forever. Will they learn whom to trust—including each other—in time to save their kingdoms, their relationship and even their lives?

Now on to the interview!

Hi Anna! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books it’s been a long time since you’ve stopped by for a visit! ALLY was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait for everyone to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

Thanks so much for having me! I’m ecstatic to be back, and very humbled that you’d have me!

For the readers: can you give us a little recap about NEMESIS and the characters?

NEMESIS is about a runaway princess who both intrigues and infuriates a boy king to no end. She has the power to help his people, yet if that power falls into the wrong hands, ALL the kingdoms may be doomed, so she struggles with whether or not to trust this boy kingand her feelings for him.

So is this the end? Is there more for Sepora and Tarik?

Ally is the endand the beginning. But beyond that, I cannot say more! But lucky for you, both books will be out and you can read to your heart’s content! Also, there is no need to write me hate mail for the ending of Nemesis. I know what I did to you and I stand by it. J

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

This time, no. I had to dig deep and find the characters by myself this time. I actually wrote conversations between them and short scenes that never made it into the books just so I could get a good grasp on who they were as people.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Sethos, Tarik’s younger brother. He’s so abrupt and honest, no matter what everyone else thinks. As for my least favorite, I don’t think have one. Even the obvious villains are fun to write, and I find that writing deceptive characters is vastly amusing to me! >insert maniacal laugh here< J

What is your favorite passage/scene in ALLY?

It’s at the very end, so I can’t tell you. But I do love the scene where Sethos himself kidnaps a certain opposing kingdom’s princess. J

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Oh. Em. Gee. I have been buried in books and documentaries about Ancient Egypt for months! Only to find that some of the things I learnedI changed for the book! I did a lot of research on how things could scientifically be feasible in ALLYand its kind of amazing that a lot of it could actually happen, if we just evolved a tiny bit more.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Warner from the Shatter Me series. To this day, I think about him. So. Freaking. Hot. I love the tormented, imperfect, and almost unredeemable type. We’re getting married one day. You’re all invited to the wedding.

After we get divorced, I’m going to marry Morpheus from the Splintered series. ‘Nuff said.

What inspired you to write YA?

I hate this question because it makes me sound like a beeeoch. Listen. I started writing YA after I read Twilight. I thought to myself, “If she can get published, surely I can get published. Yay!” But lemme tell you, Stephenie Meyer made writing look easy, which is damn hard. Kudos to her. Truly. But she did inspire me to give it a go, so thank you Stephenie!

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I’m currently reading DAUGHTER OF THE SIREN QUEEN (be jealous!). I’m obsessed with the first book and I somehow got my grubby hands on an ARC. And can I just saySqueeeeeeeee!

Also, can’t wait to read RENEGADES by Marissa Meyer. I went on a writer’s retreat with her this spring in Hawaii (highly recommended!) and just from chatting with her about it I can’t wait to read it. Then there’s BERSERKER from Emmy Laybourne. I had the pleasure of reading an early first draft of this (it was soooo gooooood!), and now I’m curious to see the final result!

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Okay, so because the end of the world was supposed to be on September 23rd, I actually confessed that I did not actually reador watchHarry Potter. Are we still friends? What House do YOU think I would be in?

I’d think you’d be a Hufflepuff Anna 😊

Twitter or Facebook?

When I want to keep up with the writing world? Twitter. When I want to keep up with my family’s shenanigans? Facebook. The truth is, I scroll them both daily, while I’m pooping. TMI?

Favorite Superhero?

Iron Man

Favorite TV show?

When Calls the Heart, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead

Sweet or Salty?

Fried

Any Phobias?

Intimate conversation

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

I have this obsession with Chase Holfelder. He remakes popular songs in his Major to Minor feature and right now I keep listening to his remake of Every Step You Take and dreaming of Morpheus.  You should check him out on YouTube. He’s so talented.

Winter Movie you’re most looking forward to?

I don’t keep up with movies coming out, just books. ButI do want to see the next Avengers, X-Men, and anything else superhero. And if they’re making another John Wick, I’m there.

Thanks so much Anna for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read ALLY!

Can I just say I love you? And thank you for having me? And always practice safe sexread books instead?
