She wanted me to explain how Cain’s ability worked? Fantastic. I wasn’t sure I understood the mechanics of it myself.

Ginger arranged this whole thing. She’d used her contacts to find this place, then somehow—I didn’t want to know the details—got a hold of a list of newish recruits. She picked the one that had the most useful ability, and sent me to step in. Personally, I found the whole set-up a little cold. Technically, she’d asked me to kill someone without even blinking an eye. The old woman had a detached way of approaching delicate situations that almost made it seem like she didn’t care.

I was in a unique position since I could technically be anyone. It made me a powerful asset—one the old woman had used without a hesitation. “I told them you wouldn’t come alone. Yet here you are,” Kale’s dark voice said from the doorway. “You’re an odd one.”

“You don’t realize it, but coming from you, that’s kinda funny,” I said, swallowing hard and turning to face him. The light from the hall lit the entire right side of his face, leaving the left cloaked in darkness. Two sides of the same dangerous coin. I wanted to back away but resisted, meeting his gaze straight on. My Kale was in there somewhere—and he could sense weakness. “Did you kill her?”


        “She’s dead.”

        
“I figured as much,” I said, jaw tense. Another step closer. “But I’m asking if you did it.” 


        He cocked his head to the left and I could see his expression. Confusion. “You asked the same thing about the other girl. Why does it matter?”

        “Because it does. It matters to you, too. You just don’t remember.”

        He took another step. Inches. He was inches from me now, the warmth from his body radiating like the sun. Every one of my muscles plunged into an all-out war with my heart. Common sense screamed for me to match his steps forward with ones away. Keep your distance—he’s dangerous!

My heart wanted to move closer. I wanted this to all be nothing more than a bad dream.

        “I feel like...when I look at you—” He shook his head and placed a hand on either side of me, up against the mattress, and brought his face close to mine. For the longest moment all he did was stare. When he did speak, there was so much rage in his voice. “You stabbed me. When that didn’t do the trick, you pushed me from the bridge. I’m asking you why?”

        “I never did that, Kale. No one’s ever pushed you from a bridge as far as I know. I promise. As for the scar, yeah. You were stabbed. Alex did it.”

        “You’re lying, Kiernan.”

        “I’m not. And my name is Dez,” I said, voice cracking under the weight of his words. “Deznee.” I wasn’t ready to give up, so I went with what had always worked for me. Something insane.

        Pushing forward, I crushed my lips to his, wrapping both arms around his neck to lock him in place. He didn’t resist and, to my surprise, didn’t shove me away. Instead, after a moment, he responded, his lips moving fervently with mine.

        The kiss only lasted a few moments. I was the one who broke it, pulling away as the clouds passed, allowing the moonlight to shine through the bedroom window once again. For a second, neither of us said a word. His cheeks glistened with my tears, making it look like he’d been crying, too, as he stared—eyes wide and mouth agape—like he’d never seen me before.

        For a crazy, insane moment, time froze. I thought maybe the kiss had done the trick. That this time the princess had woken the prince. He looked at me with a mix of shock and awe, the tiniest hint of my Kale gleamed through. My heart pounded so loudly I could barely hear anything else. It was there. I could see the spark in his eyes. “Kale?”

        But it didn’t last. Or maybe it hadn’t been there at all. Maybe I wanted to see it so badly that I imagined the whole thing.

        His lips parted and the corners tilted upward just a hair. “Roz is right. You are crazy.”

Swoon Thursday (2)- The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

Ok so you said you’d like me to keep doing Swoon Thursdays and I am here to please! Thanks to the lovely ladies at YA Bound for this awesome meme! I love being able to share swoon-worthy snippet with you!

So this week I’ve decided to share swoon-worthy scenes from one of the books I’ve read over the past week! This book is so good I’m still having problems finding a book that I like as much; can we say book hangover!

This book is very much about the Testing and the violence but there’s always time for romance and love right? And while this isn’t as hawt as my Sweet Peril one from last week I hope you enjoy!

“Right.” Tomas smiles. “With the two of us working together, how can we go wrong? And you know what? I’m glad you figured out someone was listening in for another reason.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because the first time I tell you that I’m in love with you, I’d rather not share the moment with Dr. Barnes and his friends.”

 Medieval Assassinations

The mythos of the assassin fascinates even as it horrifies. Fascinates because it allows for the actions of one to bring down a corrupt or tyrannical regime that has no avenue of redress for those not in power. It horrifies because the sudden actions of one can threaten an entire nation’s stability.

        

Something to keep in mind about assassination is that by their very definition they are political in nature. Assassination is murder specifically for political gain; it’s what sets those deaths aside from other deaths and it’s what separates assassins from serial killers, which is why the His Fair Assassin books are set against the backdrop of 15^th century Brittany.

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that our political discourse and disagreement has never been more bitter and divisive. And while it is bad, there have been many periods in history that were equally—if not more—vitriolic and downright nasty. The Middle Ages were not only a politically raw and power hungry time, but the average citizen had very little say in matters of government.

Many of the leaders of medieval kingdoms and dynasties were on the tail end of adolescence—or younger. William, Duke of Normandy, later known as William the Conqueror of England, was only seven years old when he became duke. Charles VII of France was nineteen when he was crowned king, and Louis I, became Duke of Orleans at the ripe old age of twenty. All that power un-tempered by age or wisdom was a heady thing and ripe for abuse. Assassination was an oft-used tool in their arsenal.

In fact, assassination was part of early Brittany’s history as it feuded with the neighboring duchy of Normandy. In the 11^th century, there were a series of assassinations, mostly striking dukes of Brittany and most attributed to the political aspirations of William, Duke of Normandy, eventually known as William the Conqueror. Poisoned gloves, hunting horn, and a horse’s bridle were all said to have been ways poison was administered to his enemies.

Many years later when William the Conqueror thought to finally heal the feud between the two duchies, he gave his daughter Constance in marriage to Alain IV of Brittany.

It didn’t work. Four years later, she, too, died of poison.

To be effective, assassins must know things—different ways to kill, where to strike, how to blend in, how to pass unobserved. The assassin must not only know those things, but then have the skill to pull them off, because let’s face it, knowledge does not always equal skill. But possessing both the knowledge and the skill inferred some power, power over their own lives, their governance, their safety and the well being of their loved ones.

In the middle ages, almost all of the traditional avenues of power were closed to women. In a time when women were not allowed any say in their own lives, not who they married or what they did with their lives, the acquisition of this rare and arcane knowledge would be quite seductive. The art of assassination also mimicked the nature of death itself. Swift and silent, often striking without warning, and one of the few arenas where one’s wealth or status was no guarantee of safety.

After attending Temple University, she worked as a journalist for newspapers and magazines around the country, such as the Fort Lauderdale (Florida) Sun-Sentinel and San Jose (California) Mercury News. Her award-winning novels for young people include What I Call Life; Home, and Other Big, Fat Lies; Cold Hands, Warm Heart, and Furious, all published by Henry Holt.

Jill has taught writing at several universities and is a long-time volunteer in a writing program for incarcerated teens. She lives in a beach town in Northern California.
