Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republicthe Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

Check out the book trailer! This is a trailer made by Sarah @ The YA Book Traveler isn't it awesome?!?!

Now on to the interview!

Hi Jay! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! NEVERNIGHT sounds absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

Thanks for having me J

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about NEVERNIGHT and the characters?

Nevernight is the first part of a new fantasy trilogy. It’s set on a world with three suns, which means nighttime only falls once every two and half years. The setting is a cross between ancient Rome and merchant prince era Venice.

The main character is named Mia Corvere. She’s the daughter of a traitor who tried to overthrow the Republic. Seeking revenge against the men who destroyed her family, she joins a cult of assassins known as the Red Church, seeking to be trained as one of their own. But, there are limited spaces among the Church’s chosen, and she’ll have to survive deadly trials and her fellow students in order to become the weapon she needs to be to exact her revenge.

So is there a title for book 2 yet and if so can you share???

I have a working title. But it’s not very good. I hate thinking of titles. It took me nearly 2 years to think of a good title for NEVERNIGHT. We originally sold it to my publisher with the title GIRL OF ENDINGS, which sucks a little in hindsight.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Mister Kindly is inspired by a couple of cats I’ve known. And the instructors at the Red Church are amalgams of various mean teachers I had over the years. But I try not to make my inspirations too obviousthat way lies lawsuits.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Mia is my favorite. I love her. I loved her from the first scene I wrote, way back in 2013. I didn’t know who she was back then, or what she wanted, so I wrote a book to find out. But that scene (end of chapter 50 hasn’t really changed much in 3 years. Those words are the heart of her.

Least fave? I don’t know I have one. The characters I dislike the most is probably Adonai or Marielle, because they’re both such awful, soulless people. But I still enjoy writing them. I get to the let the bastard in me come out and play.

What is your favorite passage/scene in NEVERNIGHT?

Three way toss up between scenes, I’m afraid. I can’t pick between them.
1.        The opening chapter. I think that’s some of the best writing I’ve ever done.
2.      Mia’s torture scene in Godsgrave.
3.      Mia’s chat wit Tric at the end of Chapter 5.
My fave quote is probably this, though:
“The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us.”

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I’m a huge Roman history buff. If you want to have a seven-hour conversation about the impacts of the Julian dynasty on modern day global politics, I’m your guy. I’ve been a study of ancient Rome since I was a kid. Ditto Merchant Prince Venice and the rise of the Holy Roman Empire. You could honestly say I’ve been researching this book for 20 years. Of course it’s fantasy, so you put your own spin on it. But the whole setting began as something of a thought experiment: “What if Julius Caesar’s march on Rome failed, and the Republic endured til the middle ages?”

Who is your ultimate author crush?

Robin Hobb. She’s too old for me, but that lady is mighty.

What inspired you to write YA?

Honestly I just write the stories as they play out in my head. Sometimes they’re YA, sometimes they’re notI dont go into a story with preconceived notions. I don’t know if NEVERNIGHT is YA, but then, I’ve never seen a definition of YA that I’m satisfied with. YA isn’t a genre. It’s a demographic. There are no conventions and no taboos that I can really see any more.

NN is being marketed as adult, my publisher is an adult publisher, but naturally YA readers who follow me through the ILLUMINAE FILES are going to be drawn to it and read it. I think of it as a crossover bookthe protagonist is a teenager, but shes dealing with some very heavy topics. But I like that the book is causing a discussion, and that most early readers are really getting into it J

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?
Right now, I’m just about to start a YA SF book called TATTOO ATLAS by Tim Floreen. Very excited! I just finished a very cool YA novel called THE BOUNDLESS SUBLIME by Lili Wilkinson, about a girl who falls into a cult. Very thought provoking and powerful.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?
Slytherin 4 lyf

Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter. Does anyone use FB anymore?

Favorite Superhero?
Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider can.

Favorite TV show?

About Jay Kristoff
Jay Kristoff is a New York Times and international bestselling author of science fiction and fantasy. He grew up in the second most isolated capital city on earth and fled at his earliest convenience, although he’s been known to trek back for weddings of the particularly nice and funerals of the particularly wealthy. He spent most of his formative years locked in his bedroom with piles of books, or gathered around dimly-lit tables rolling polyhedral dice. Being the holder of an Arts degree, he has no education to speak of.

His LOTUS WAR trilogy was critically acclaimed in Kirkus and Publishers Weekly, nominated for the David Gemmell Morningstar and Legend awards and won the 2014 Aurealis Award. Jay’s new series, the SciFi thriller THE ILLUMINAE FILES, was co-authored with Amie Kaufman. Book 1, ILLUMINAE, became a New York Times and international bestseller, was named among the Kirkus, Amazon and YALSA Best Books of 2015 and won the 2016 Aurealis Award and an ABIA Book of the Year award. ILLUMINAE is currently slated to be published in twenty five countries, and film rights have been acquired by Brad Pitt and Plan B Entertainment.

Jay’s new fantasy series, THE NEVERNIGHT CHRONICLE, commences with book 1, NEVERNIGHT, from St Martins Press/Thomas Dunne Books and Harper Voyager in 2016. A new YA series, LIFEL1K3 has also been acquired by Knopf/Random House Kids, and commences publication in 2018. Jay is as surprised about all this as you are. He is represented by Josh Adams at Adams Literary.

Jay is 6’7 and has approximately 13,030 days to live. He abides in Melbourne with his secret agent kung-fu assassin wife, and the world’s laziest Jack Russell.

In the kingdom of Lovero, nine rival Families of assassins lawfully kill people for a price. As a highly skilled member of one of these powerful clans, seventeen-year-old Lea Saldana has always trusted in the strength of her Family. Until she awakens to find them murdered and her home in flames. The Da Vias, the Saldanas’ biggest enemy, must be responsible—and Lea should have seen it coming. But her secret relationship with the Da Vias’ son, Val, has clouded her otherwise killer instinct—and given the Da Vias more reason than ever to take her Family down.

Racked with guilt and shattered over Val’s probable betrayal, Lea sets out to even the score, with her heart set on retaliation and only one thought clear in her mind: make the Da Vias pay.

With shades of The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet, this richly imagined fantasy from debut author Sarah Ahiers is a story of love, lies, and the ultimate vengeance.

So what do you think? Will you be adding this to your pile? What are you dying to read this week?

Title:  DEATH MARKED
Author: Leah Cypess
Pub. Date: March 3, 2015
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Pages: 400
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

A young sorceress’s entire life has been shaped to destroy the empire controlling her world. But if everything she knows is a lie, will she even want to fulfill her destiny? The sequel to Death Sworn is just as full of magic and surprising revelations, and will thrill fans of Leigh Bardugo and Robin LaFevers.

At seventeen, Ileni lost her magical power and was exiled to the hidden caves of the assassins. She never thought she would survive long. But she discovered she was always meant to end up, powerless, in the caves as part of an elder sorcerer’s plan to destroy the evil Empire they'd battled so long. Except that Ileni is not an assassin, and she doesn't want to be a weapon. And, after everything, she’s not even sure she knows the truth. Now, at the very heart of the Empire—its academy for sorcerers—the truth is what she seeks. What she finds challenges every belief she holds dear—and it threatens her fledgling romance with the young master of assassins.

Leah Cypess spins an intricate and beautiful conclusion to Ileni's story. In the end, it may not be the epic decisions that bring down an empire, but the small ones that pierce the heart.

Now on to the  post!

I decided to take some of my favorite quotes from DEATH SWORN so I don't spoil anything in DEATH MARKED and share them today!

DEATH SWORN

"Arcaians truly know how to dance,” Sorin said, shouting now over the sound of the music—and the whoops of the others as they began to leap out on the floor. "Be glad you don’t know the words of this song, though.”

“Who says I don’t?” Ileni retorted. An Assassin whirled past them, launching himself off the rock floor and tumbling over twice in midair before landing lightly on his feet.
Sorin rolled his eyes and took her other hand. His hand was fine boned, but rough and calloused. He pulled her close with casual strength and grinned down at her.

“His dark eyes searched her face. "But you love me," he said finally.

She had no reason to deny it. Ileni lifted her shoulders. "I'll recover.”

“His eyes met hers, cold and deadly, and the dagger's edge pressed against her skin. Then his expression shifted into horror. He lowered the dagger and stepped back. "Ileni. That was not smart."

"I know. I'm sorry. . . ." And this time, she didn't even try to stop the tears.”

“Every person we assassinate dies to serve a greater purpose."

"I'm sure they would be happy if they knew it," Ileni said sarcastically, but her voice sounded weak even to her. "If you would explain it to them, perhaps they would volunteer for your knives.”

“And then he hesitated. He turned his head and looked across the chasm at Ileni. Their eyes met, and his weren't deadly and focused at all. They were . . . afraid.

This thing between us wouldn't survive my watching you murder someone.”

I hope you liked!!!

About Leah:
I wrote my first story in first grade. The narrator was an ice-cream cone in the process of being eaten. In fourth grade, I wrote my first book, about a girl who gets shipwrecked on a desert island with her faithful and heroic dog (a rip-off of both The Black Stallion and all the Lassie movies, very impressive).

After selling my first story (Temple of Stone) while in high school, I gave in to my mother’s importuning to be practical and majored in biology at  Brooklyn College. I then went to Columbia Law School and practiced law for almost two years at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, a large law firm in New York City. I kept writing and submitting in my spare time, and finally, a mere 15 years after my first short story acceptance, I sold my first novel to Greenwillow Books (HarperCollins).

I live in Brookline, Massachusetts (right outside of Boston) with my husband Aaron, a researcher and doctor at the Joslin Diabetes Center, and our three children.

When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.

But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

Now on to the  post!

I thought a  lot about what to write about and I decided to pick one of my favorite scenes. I'm titling this "Dancing with an Assassin."

I love this scene and I picked a song for you to listen to while reading it so make sure to click "play" on the video before you start reading!

A sudden Soaring melody pierced the cavern, followed by a fast rhythmic beat. She turned and Saw two boys in the corner, one with a flute, the other pounding at a pair of drums. She didn’t recognize them--they were too young to be her students; eleven or twelve years old, maybe? The flute player had fiery red hair and an angelic face. Did all assassins learn an instrument? Or was he being prepared for a specific mission?

“lt's an Arcaian dance song,” Sorin said, and she turned back to him. He was watching her with the oddest expression on his face--as if it mattered what she thought of this strange Party. As if he cared whether, right now, she was happy.

That was delusion. Delusion, and wine. Sorin was a killer. But he didn't look like one, right now, as he held his hand out to her.

She decided not to think about it--not thinking about things was feeling wonderful, and the wine and music made it easy. She took his hand.

He was closer to her than he had ever been, his arms encircling her with unyielding strength. She could feel his breath as he spoke. "Can sorcerers dance?"

She lifted her chin to stare up into his face. "l think you’re about to find out."

Actually, sorcerers couldn’t dance--not in the athletic graceful way the assassins could-but it didn’t matter. Sorin held her close and refrained from the complex acrobatics the other assassins were showing off with. They whirled around the cave floor to the tune of the music. Sorin looked down at her with his lips pressed together but curved upward at the corners. The music worked its way into lleni's blood, and she moved to its beat without really thinking. the fabric of her skirt brushing rhythmically against her legs. Exhilaration rushed through her, fueled by the music and the movement and the press of Sorin's hands against her lower hack. Every time he pulled her close she it felt like another draught of wine, making her reckless and giddy.

“Does your master know about this?” she asked at one point, when her cheek was inches form Sorin’s.

“Of course.” Sorin said. He pushed her away, twirled her around, pulled her close again.
“But Don’t worry he never comes. He knows we need some small freedoms.”

Not true freedom, of he knows about it. But who was she to talk? She had chafed against some of her training restrictions, back in the sorcerer’s compound; she had broken the rules often enough to be with Tellis. Small freedoms, every one of them, nothing that would have scandalized the Elders had they found out. For all her little rebellions, she had been content to be what she was being molded to be.

And she didn’t want to argue with Sorin now. He grabbed both her hands, and she leaned back into the swing. As her head fell back, her hair flying out behind her, she scanned the cavern. She was still looking for lrun, but her eye fell instead on Bazel. The round-faced assassin was not part of the dancing. He stood in a corner, near the piles of weapons, small and furtive. Every once in a while, one of the other assassins would walk up to him, and Bazel would hand him something too small for Ileni to see.

Sorin followed her gaze and grimaced. “Would you prefer to dance with your favorite?”

I hope you liked!! This one of my favorite scenes and songs!
