Top Ten Tuesday (59)- My Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get, the Love Interest Edition

Hi thanks for stopping by!!! And welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

March 8: Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get

I'm going to make this list more specific than just characters I don't like. I'm going to go with love interests.

1. Peeta from The Hunger Games series. Sorry y'all I just never saw his appeal. Although I never liked Gale either. I always loved Finnick *sobs*

2. Adam from the Shatter Me series. Team Warner all the way! I thought Adam was annoying.

3. Jonas from the Falling Kingdoms series. Yep Team Magnus all the way!

4. Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I'm probably going to get a lot of crap for this one but I truly do not like his character! I only kept reading the book for the other POV's. Especially Matthais and Nina.

5. Tamlin from Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns And Roses. I preferred Lucien and Rhys.

6. Luc from Page Morgan's The Dispossessed series. I am definitely a Nolan girl!

7. Jack from Kresley Cole's The Arcana Chronicles. I can't stand Jack! I love Death (Aric).

8. Morpheus from A.G. Howard's Splintered series. Sorry don't get the appeal. Team Jeb for life!

9. Maxon from Kiera Cass's The Selection series. Probably going to get crap for this one too! But sorry I'm an Aspen girl. Also I DNF'd the last book because I figured out the ending and who she was going to end up with by page 13!

10. Jack from Brodi Ashton's Everneath series. Again I just don't get his appeal. I loved Cole from the moment I met him.

So what about you? What are your favorite fantasy books? And check back next week for my Ten Books On My Spring TBR.

Review- The Elite by Kiera Cass

Publisher: HarperTeen
ISBN:  0062059963

Rating: Loved!!!!!!!!!!!
From Goodreads.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestseller The Selection.

Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Illea.

America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.

Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending.

Ok. So I liked The Selection it was a fast light read and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on The Elite. What I didn’t expect was that I’d love this book so much more than the first! Kiera took what she did in The Selection and made it so much more! Yes there’s still the Bachelor-esque moments that made me cringe like they did in the first book but not as many. This one delves more into the politics of the world and if America thinks she can be a queen.

It also has the love triangle that many people moan and groan about but, I think she’s done a great job with it. There were many places in this book that I flipped flopped between Maxon and Aspen. I was fully Team Aspen in book 1 and I was actually angry that she made me start to feel something for Maxon. I will tell you that by the end of the book I was fully back on Aspen’s side though. There’s something that happens…that in my mind can’t be forgiven.

As for the story it’s darker which I really loved and we get to meet new characters some who could be great allies and some great enemies and I can’t wait to read book 3 to see if my sneaking suspicions come true!

And because I didn’t want to make Aspen or Maxon lovers angry I’ve chosen two small passages to share with you!

Maxon and America.

I sighed trying to keep my voice steady. “I don’t want to leave all of this.”

“If I remember correctly, the first time we met, you said it was like a cage.” He smiled. “It does grow on you, though, doesn’t it?”

I gave my head a small shake. “Sometimes you can be so stupid.” A weak laugh pushed through my choked-up throat.
Maxon let me pull away just enough so I could look into his brown eyes.

“Not the palace, Maxon. I could care less about the clothes or my bed or, believe it or not, the food”

Maxon Laughed. It had been no secret how excited I had been about the extravagant meals here.

“It’s you,” I said. “I don’t want to leave you”

“Me?”

I nodded.

“You want me?”

I giggled at his bewildered expression. “That’s what I’m saying.”

He paused for a moment. “How--But—What did I do?”

Aspen and America.

I sighed and went to get a cup of water. Aspen followed me while the rest of the girls left.

“So,” he started. I did a sweep of the room to make sure no one was watching. “I have to assume that if you’re not worried about me, you’re worried about him.”

I lowered my eyes and blushed. How well he knew me.

“Not that I’m cheering for him or anything, but if he can’t see how amazing you are, he’s an idiot.”

I smiled, continuing to study the floor.

“And if you don’t get to be princess then, so what? That doesn’t make you any less incredible. And you know…you know…” He couldn’t get out what he wanted to say, and I risked looking at his face.

In Aspen’s eyes I saw a thousand different endings to that sentence, all of them connecting him to me. That he was still waiting for me. That he knew me better than anyone. That we were the same. That a few months at the palace couldn’t erase two years. No matter what, Aspen would always be there for me.

“I know, Aspen. I do”

Jaime's Review of The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Selection

From Goodreads.
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

I’ve seen The Selection compared to The Hunger Games and quite frankly that bothers me because all Dystopian novels are not like The Hunger Games; just like vampire books are not all like Twilight! That being said I can see where a small part of this book could be compared; there’s a TV show in the story with an enigmatic host who interviews the girls but, that is where the comparisons end in my opinion.

I liked this book I wouldn’t say it’s a favorite but the story is really cute and I enjoyed the characters. I’ll admit I wasn’t a big fan of the MC’s name but I liked her characteristics so I could overlook it. I really loved both the male leads Aspen and Maxon they were both genuine good people and as hard as the situation was they tried to make the best of it. I did enjoy the Bachelor aspect to it I’m not a fan of the TV show but I think Kiera created a version that incorporated the TV show in a fairy tale way that made it work.

I decided on a passage between Maxon and Mer (I prefer her nickname lol) that I found quite funny.

His expression was affectionate but guarded. “I’ve met nearly every woman in this room, and I can’t think of one who would make a better friend. I’d be glad to have you stay.”

My relief was inexpressible.

“Do you think,” Maxon asked, “that I could still call you ‘my dear’?”

“Not a chance,” I whispered.

“I’ll keep trying. I don’t have it in me to give up.” And I believed him. It was annoying to think he’d press that issue.

“Did you call all of them that?” I nodded my head toward the rest of the room.

“Yes, and they all seemed to like it.”

“That is the exact reason why I don’t.” And I stood.

Maxon was chuckling as he rose with me. I would have scowled, but it actually was kind of funny. He bowed, I curtsied, and I went back to my seat.
