Ok so I'm sure this is going to be a rambling review because I just finished this book and I can't seem to form a coherent thought after that "OMG did that just happen?!?!" ending! But I need to write this review now with all the feelings I am having. I don't know how much of a review it'll be though since EVERYTHING in this book is huge and spoilery!

I truly believe that each book in this series just gets better! Kresley has an amazing way of sucking me right back into this world and crushing me, then making me smile and swoon, then absolutely obliterating me with feelings I never thought I'd feel reading a book! My heart beat so hard in certain chapters I thought I might be having a heart attack (no joke I had to stop and check my pulse a few times).  So what can I tell you? Of course Evie is back but not unscathed, some people are dead (no I will not say who), some people are alive (same as above), and we meet some new Arcana (although if you've read Day Zero you've already met them). Bagmen are a little less creepy (but still creepy), oh and we finally get to meet Evie's grandma, and we learn there's more Arcana in the game than we thought.

Man this book kicked my ass! In a good way and now I am going to be struggling until Spring of 2017 waiting for the next book! And praying the publication date doesn't get moved to later!

I am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

KE: Thank you for inviting me aboard! And, yes, although I was actually going for a slightly different appearance, once I saw that photo of Manu Bennett I knew he had the perfect world-weary loyal soldier look for Esladas.

For the readers: can you give us a little recap about COURT OF FIVES and the characters? And what we can expect in POISONED BLADE?

Kirkus Reviews wrote: “After the death of the highly placed aristocrat whose patronage ensured their safety, Jessamy’s mixed-race family is targeted by political enemies; spared thanks to her skill at the game of Fives, she must find a way to save them.”

Jessamy is one of four daughters of Patron-born Captain Esladas and Commoner-born Kiya, who by law are not allowed to marry. The other girls are the eldest, Maraya, Jes’s twin Bettany, and the youngest, Amaya. In the course of her adventures Jes also meets Lord Kalliarkos, who also runs the Fives, and – less pleasantly – Kalliarkos’s uncle Lord Gargaron, who has his own plans for the family. That covers the main characters.

In Poisoned Blade you can expect a lot of action and blood ç that’s the least spoilerish thing I can write.

Slightly spoilerish è Jes has to deal with the fallout from her choice at the end of Court of Fives. She is also desperate to find her lost sister Bettany but the only way to do so is to travel outside Saryenia in the company of Lord Gargaron, the man she hates the most. It’s possible there may be interaction with a giant mechanical spider. And maybe a kiss.

So is there a title for book 3 yet? And if so can you share it?

There is a title for book three and also a preliminary cover, but they are both under wraps for now. The title will make perfect sense to everyone who has finished POISONED BLADE.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

I don’t generally write characters as analogs of people in life (with one exception in my Crown of Stars series). However I do often take qualities I have seen in individuals and examine them through the lens of fiction. So for example, when I watch a competitive, confident young athlete like snowboarder Chloe Kim or tennis star Serena Williams I imagine how a girl with that drive would find a way to become an adversary in Efea. In the mid 90s I remember reading an interview with one of the players from the UConn women’s basketball team the first year they went unbeaten, in which she said that she played so fiercely because she hated to lose. That statement stuck with me, and “hating to lose” became part of Jes’s character.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Jessamy has always been my favorite character to write in the Court of Fives books precisely because she is so competitive, she never lets us, she isn’t ashamed of being confident and assertive, and she is so determined to win despite the odds.

Least favorite is harder. I usually really enjoy writing villains because they are so despicable. So my least favorite character to write may often be the character who was hardest to “get right” and who I had to really dig into during rewrites to get exactly the nuance of personality I was hoping for. In Poisoned Blade I think Bettany was the hardest character to write. I don’t really have a least favorite character though; good or bad, if the characters shine then I enjoy writing them.

What is your favorite passage/scene in POISONED BLADE?

Probably the sequence in the desert, and the last paragraph of the book. To give more details would be spoiling.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story? There’s a lot of American Ninja Warrior like courses, did you marathon the shows for inspiration? (Love that show btw)

Yes I was forced to watch a lot of American Ninja Warrior and Sasuke (the original Japanese show). Also training montage clips like this of Stephen Amell in tv show Arrow. Believe me, I have really suffered for my art:

I also did a lot of reading about Greco-Roman (Ptolemaic) Egypt, a period two thousand years ago when first the Greeks (Macedeonians starting with Alexander the Great) and later (after the death of the last  Ptolemaic ruler, Cleopatra) the Roman Empire ruled Egypt. The society of Efea is loosely inspired by that era although it’s not an historical novel but a made up fantasy world. The setting was originally inspired by my spouse’s work at the archaeological site of Tell Timai in the Delta Region of Egypt, which was a flourishing provincial capital at that time.  

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Mr Darcy from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

What inspired you to write YA?

I’ve spent much of my career writing in the genre of adult sff. When I was young most of the stories centered around men and boys, who were considered the “appropriate” subjects of adventure and action fiction. To be honest, it’s always been a bit of an uphill climb for me to place women and girls at the center of the action without feeling like I have to prove that it’s “historically accurate” (in fantasy!) or “realistic” or “interesting” for them to be there. I knew that in YA I would never ever have to defend my desire to write stories about a fierce heroine.

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I am dying to read Cindy Pon’s SACRIFICE, the follow-up to her YA fantasy novel SERPENTINE, which came out last year. Her protagonist, Skybright, is an obedient lady in waiting in a fantasy setting based on historical China who finds out something monstrous about herself. I can’t wait to continue her story.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

My daughter says I’m a Ravenclaw and the Pottermore Sorting Hat placed me in Griffindor, so I’ve decided I’m a Griffinclaw

Hi Jay! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! NEVERNIGHT sounds absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about NEVERNIGHT and the characters?

Nevernight is the first part of a new fantasy trilogy. It’s set on a world with three suns, which means nighttime only falls once every two and half years. The setting is a cross between ancient Rome and merchant prince era Venice.

The main character is named Mia Corvere. She’s the daughter of a traitor who tried to overthrow the Republic. Seeking revenge against the men who destroyed her family, she joins a cult of assassins known as the Red Church, seeking to be trained as one of their own. But, there are limited spaces among the Church’s chosen, and she’ll have to survive deadly trials and her fellow students in order to become the weapon she needs to be to exact her revenge.

So is there a title for book 2 yet and if so can you share???

I have a working title. But it’s not very good. I hate thinking of titles. It took me nearly 2 years to think of a good title for NEVERNIGHT. We originally sold it to my publisher with the title GIRL OF ENDINGS, which sucks a little in hindsight.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Mister Kindly is inspired by a couple of cats I’ve known. And the instructors at the Red Church are amalgams of various mean teachers I had over the years. But I try not to make my inspirations too obvious—that way lies lawsuits.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Mia is my favorite. I love her. I loved her from the first scene I wrote, way back in 2013. I didn’t know who she was back then, or what she wanted, so I wrote a book to find out. But that scene (end of chapter 50 hasn’t really changed much in 3 years. Those words are the heart of her.

Least fave? I don’t know I have one. The characters I dislike the most is probably Adonai or Marielle, because they’re both such awful, soulless people. But I still enjoy writing them. I get to the let the bastard in me come out and play.

What is your favorite passage/scene in NEVERNIGHT?

Three way toss up between scenes, I’m afraid. I can’t pick between them.

1.        The opening chapter. I think that’s some of the best writing I’ve ever done.

2.      Mia’s torture scene in Godsgrave.

3.      Mia’s chat wit Tric at the end of Chapter 5.

My fave quote is probably this, though:

“The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us.”

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I’m a huge Roman history buff. If you want to have a seven-hour conversation about the impacts of the Julian dynasty on modern day global politics, I’m your guy. I’ve been a study of ancient Rome since I was a kid. Ditto Merchant Prince Venice and the rise of the Holy Roman Empire. You could honestly say I’ve been researching this book for 20 years. Of course it’s fantasy, so you put your own spin on it. But the whole setting began as something of a thought experiment: “What if Julius Caesar’s march on Rome failed, and the Republic endured til the middle ages?”

Who is your ultimate author crush?

Robin Hobb. She’s too old for me, but that lady is mighty.

What inspired you to write YA?

Honestly I just write the stories as they play out in my head. Sometimes they’re YA, sometimes they’re not—I don’t go into a story with preconceived notions. I don’t know if NEVERNIGHT is YA, but then, I’ve never seen a definition of YA that I’m satisfied with. YA isn’t a genre. It’s a demographic. There are no conventions and no taboos that I can really see any more.

NN is being marketed as adult, my publisher is an adult publisher, but naturally YA readers who follow me through the ILLUMINAE FILES are going to be drawn to it and read it. I think of it as a crossover book—the protagonist is a teenager, but she’s dealing with some very heavy topics. But I like that the book is causing a discussion, and that most early readers are really getting into it J

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Right now, I’m just about to start a YA SF book called TATTOO ATLAS by Tim Floreen. Very excited! I just finished a very cool YA novel called THE BOUNDLESS SUBLIME by Lili Wilkinson, about a girl who falls into a cult. Very thought provoking and powerful.

I chose a topic from April 2011, Book Covers I Wish I Could Redesign. These are all books I've read, loved, and hated the covers or books that I've read that had an amazing original cover that the publisher decided to redesign and was an awful redesign.

I'll add book covers so click on the cover to be taken to their Goodreads links. Also if the cover is a redesign I'll post both the original cover and the bad redesign. You'll notice that all the redesigns I hate are Penguin or Simon & Schuster redesigns. I have no idea why they feel the need to redesign perfectly good book covers.

1. I just recently read this one and I really enjoyed the story! I can't stand this cover though.

2. Loved this story but man do I hate this cover something fierce!

3. Ok here's one that's gone through a cover change. There was nothing wrong with the first and it's by far my favorite.
