Excerpt from one of the books in the Box Set:
Embracing the Dragon:
The Flames of Kalleen

By: K.L. Bone

Ash fell from the sky, blanketing the charred ground like cascading snow. Amelia stretched out her fingers, finding the burnt residue cool against her pale skin, lacking the heat responsible for the land’s horrific transformation. As she searched the valley for the conflagration’s source, or any living being, toxic particles coated her lungs with each labored breath.

Normally this lush region would have been filled with the merry songs of chittering birds, and the scattering rustle of creatures hidden amid the tall grass. As she walked the field, the only sounds were the crunch of charred vegetation, and her occasional cough as her chest attempted to expel the smoke-laden air.

She scanned the horizon, seeking flames. Gloomy air surrounded her, with smoke so thick she couldn’t even discern the fire’s glow through its suffocating layers.

Amelia pushed forward, drawing shallow breaths as more particles lined her throat, turning coughs to occasional gags as she reached what should have been the forest’s edge. In place of towering trees, she found blackened stumps. Her heart skipped at the sight, her mind rejecting the ruined vision of the land she had loved.

“What happened?” she asked the desolate terrain. “What, by the gods, took place here?”

She had cherished this land with its lush shrubbery, thick enough to hide even her darkest secrets. A place all were once welcomed to enjoy shaded comfort, perfumed by the sweet scent of fresh grass and wildflowers. Now, only cooling embers remained.

When she reached the clearing’s center, a pitiful squeak drew her attention. She knelt, brushing her hand through ash and soot to find a bird chirping meekly between desperate gasps. Gently cradling the suffering creature between her hands, Amelia closed her eyes.

As though anticipating her intentions, the wren remained motionless against her palms, and its labored breathing eased.

Settling her mind upon the bird, soft-blue light emanated from between her fingers, bathing the unremarkable brown feathers in cerulean light. As Amelia’s power drew out the toxins poisoning the delicate creature, it first flapped its wings, and then flew from Amelia’s hands.

“Fly away,” she urged. “The air remains poisonous.”

The bird chirped in thanks before fluttering away, though Amelia was uncertain as to the safety of its chosen direction.

She resumed her survey of the ruined forest, helping a struggling squirrel in the same manner she had the bird. As it scampered away, Amelia stood and attempted to brush the soot from her hands, but only managed to smudge the fine black powder.

Without audible warning, orange flames surged toward her, forcing Amelia to jump to her left, rolling through the fire’s debris, hands and knees stinging as they encountered hidden rocks.

A roar resounded, shattering the unnatural silence as Amelia glanced toward the sky to face a looming figure.

Above, darker than the choking smoke, hovered an immense beast, its wingspan casting a wide shadow over her curled form. The deep purple wings had a feathered appearance, glowing with what appeared to be golden flames, though they did not burn. Instead the menacing creature’s wings fanned hotter, reminding Amelia of a forge fire amplified by a blacksmith’s bellow. From an ebony body, its back feet were hooved, but its front arms had claws similar to a bird’s, while larger talons protruded from the outer tips of both wings. A terrifying creature of utter destruction.

The dragon stared down with glinting silver eyes, glowing nostrils framing the fire within. With each methodical beat of its wings, Amelia’s blonde tresses were alternately tugged and blown back in the wash of hot air.

Fear consumed her, stole her breath, and froze every thought. She briefly considered running, but knew she would never escape the creature’s wrath.

Shakily, Amelia climbed to her feet, her blue eyes wide as she waited for her inevitable fate. The dragon’s jaws opened, flames spilling to engulf the girl below before she could even utter a scream.

About The Rise (Book 1):

Family is power. The Original vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together always and forever. But even when you're immortal, promises are hard to keep.

Arriving in New Orleans in 1722, Original vampire siblings Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson believe they've escaped their dangerous past. But the city is lawless, a haven for witches and werewolves unwilling to share territory. The siblings are at their mercy, especially after Klaus meets the beautiful and mysterious Vivianne. Her impending marriage is key to ending the war between the supernatural factions—and Klaus's attraction to her could destroy the uneasy alliance. As Elijah works toward securing a piece of the city for his family, and Rebekah fights her unexpected feelings for a French captain, will Klaus's volatile desires bring their world crashing down—and tear them apart for good?

About The Loss (Book 2):

Family is power. The Original vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together always and forever. But even when you're immortal, promises are hard to keep.

After a hurricane destroyed their city, Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson have rebuilt New Orleans to even greater glory. The year is 1766. The witches live on the fringes in the bayou. The werewolves have fled. But still, Klaus isn't satisfied. He wants more. He wants power. But when Klaus finally finds a witch who will perform a spell to give him what he desires most, she secretly uses Klaus to unleash a curse—one that brings back hundreds of her ancestors—and begins a war to reclaim New Orleans. As the siblings fight off the attack, only one thing's for certain—the result will be a bloodbath.

Well besides the fact that he's smoking hot lol he's my favorite character.

A New York Times bestselling author brings dark secrets to life in a lush new YA perfect for fans of Libba Bray or Cassandra Clare.

But upon turning seventeen, the girls must return to their homeland to meet their relatives, find proper husbands, and—most terrifyingly—learn the deep family secrets of The Claw, The Wing, and The Smoke. The Florescus, after all, are shape-shifters, and it is time for Dacia and Lou to fulfill the prophecy that demands their acceptance of this fate . . . or fight against this cruel inheritance with all their might.

Ooh also Kathleen and I have very similar tastes in music. I’ll be embedding my favorite videos for you to watch and make sure to enter the awesome giveaway below!

Check THORNHILL out!

Title: THORNHILL
Author: Kathleen Peacock
Pub. Date: September 10, 2013
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Pages:352

Mac can’t lose another friend. Even if he doesn’t want to be found.

The ripple effect caused by Mac’s best friend Amy’s murder has driven Mac’s new love, Kyle, to leave Hemlock and disappear from her life forever. But Mac knows that Kyle plans to enroll in a rehabilitation camp, where he can live with other werewolves. She refuses to accept his decision, especially since the camps are rumored to be tortuous. So she sets out in search of Kyle with a barely sober Jason—and Amy’s all-seeing ghost—in tow.

Clues lead Mac to find Kyle in a werewolf den in Colorado—but their reunion is cut short by a Tracker raid. Now Mac and Kyle are trapped inside the electric fences of Thornhill, a camp for  young werewolves. As she devises an escape plan, Mac uncovers dangerous secrets buried within the walls of Thornhill—and realizes that the risk to the people she loves is greater than ever before.

Now onto the playlist!

The playlist for Thornhill is actually quite long (twenty-four songs on the final playlist and about seventy songs that I listened to at various points), but bellow are nine songs which were integral to writing the book.

"Running Up That Hill" (cover of Kate Bush) by Placebo

"And if I only could/ Make a deal with God/ And get him to swap our places/ Be running up that road/ Be running up that hill"

According to Wikipedia*, Kate Bush (who wrote and performed the original song) has said, "I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman, can't understand each other" while Q magazine has described the Placebo cover as "sound[ing] more like a pact with the Devil' than the original 'deal with God'." In Thornhill, Mac is willing to risk everything—her life, her freedom, her future—to save Kyle and Serena from a life in the camps which makes the Placebo cover the perfect Thornhill song.

--

"Set the Fire to the Third Bar" by Snow Patrol

"I'm miles from where you are/ I lay down on the cold ground/ And I, I pray that something picks me up/ And sets me down in your warm arms"

"Set the Fire to the Third Bar" is one song that really defines the Mac/Kyle dynamic in Thornhill. Kyle and Mackenzie are separated by physical distance as the book opens, but even after they've been reunited, you have to wonder if the distance between their two worlds is just too great for happy ever after. Even the music video seems to perfectly capture the situation faced by the two of them in the camp; I would rewatch it whenever I got stuck on one of their scenes.

--

"9 Crimes / 9 Crimes (Demo version)" by Damien Rice

"Leave me out with the waste/ This is not what I do/ It's the wrong kind of place/ To be thinking of you"

If "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" is for Mac and Kyle, then "9 Crimes" is for Mac and Jason. Or, rather, "9 Crimes" is for Jason's conflicted feelings about Mackenzie and his self-destructive nature. The second chapter of Thornhill (in which Mac patches up Jason in a dingy motel bathroom) was written to the album version of this song and other Jason scenes were written to the demo version.

--

"Shattered" by Trading Yesterday

"There's a light/ There's a sun/ Taking all shattered ones/ To the place we belong"

I actually stumbled onto this song while watching fanvids and wrote an entire scene between Jason and Mac to it. Most of that scene ended up on the cutting room floor (for anyone who has read the book: the rest of the scene is the bit where Mac and Jason are on the broken porch swing), but I feel like the song really suits Jason's character arc in the book. He finds something bigger than himself, something—and someone—worth pulling himself together for.

--

"Annabelle" by Gillian Welch

"We cannot have all things to please us/ No matter how we try"

No matter how much Mac might want to outrun her childhood, it comes back to bite her in the butt in book two. While the lyrics to "Annabelle" don't really suit the situation, the tone and feel of the song is a perfect match for Mac's twisted past.

--

"You Made me the Thief of your Heart" by Sinead O'Connor

"I'll never wash these clothes/ I want to keep the stain/ Your blood to me is precious/ nor would I spill it in vain"

Very bad things happen to the Hemlock crew inside Thornhill. Very, very bad things.

--

"Heavy in Your Arms" by Florence + the Machine

"And is it worth the wait/ All this killing time?/ Are you strong enough to stand/Protecting both your heart and mine?"

This song unstuck me when I was badly stuck. I had reached a key part of act three and just couldn't figure out how to get everyone in place for the big, climatic showdown. Finally, after hours spent staring at a blinking cursor, I hauled on my coat and went for a walk. It was dark and raining and this song came up on shuffle. As I listened to it, I saw the entire scene unfold in my head.

--

"Young Cardinals" by Alexisonfire

"Strange things happen in the night-time hours/ White tails graze and wolves devour"

It's hard to imagine a more perfect song for an uprising. This is one of two Alexisonfire songs on the playlist and one of three Alexisonfire songs I listened to while writing the book.

--

"Shake it Out" by Florence + the Machine

"I am done with my graceless heart/ So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart/ 'Cause I like to keep my issues strong/ It's always darkest before the dawn"

I knew how I wanted Thornhill to end before I sat down to write a single word, and it always ended with the same two characters in a scene set to this song. Mac knows she can't keep running from the past and that there is a long road ahead, but she's hopeful.

Thanks so much Kathleen now I have Palcebo and Florence stuck in my head lol Awesome playlist!!!!
