Tiamat is a demon god from Earth now banished to a world full of magic and dragon. Lucky for him, his dragon form is a six-headed dragon. The magic here is not like on Earth, it comes from dragons, not from souls.

To be a god on this world, he must learn how to harness the power of the dragons. So, pretending to be less than he is, he joins the Magesterium to train as a mage. He masters this ability easily but is paired with a dragon who was once a human. Her dragon mate has died and if he doesn’t pair with her, the other dragons will kill her.

Her magic is weak, but Tiamat can fix that. He can show this world that the dragons banished from their clans can find a new purpose, just like him. Until his past catches up and demons from Earth arrive to take a soul from Tiamat that they feel is theirs. Turns out, necromancy is easy to do on this world and the other demons have no qualms about using it.

To defeat the other demons, Tiamat must give up the new life he’s found, and become the god he was destined to be.

Author’s Note:
This story is available in two adaptations. The original, Mages & Mates, is a romance filled with encounters involving dragon shape-shifters. This story stars a very lust-filled mage and a demon who seems to marry one of every species on this world, collecting a harem of men and women spouses.
The alternative adaptation, Mages & Magic, is censored and edited to be appropriate for all ages. It has the same main story, but the mage fights with a desire to roll dice and play dice games. The demon gets married only once, then forms alliances with vows of loyalty, rather than marriages.
So, pick the version that fits your taste and enjoy an epic adventure with an unlikely group of anti-heroes.

*Deleted Scene*

The original script had the dragons with no human form. Instead, they were little lizards kept in jars, until they were bound to a mage. Below is the original scene where Leslie is assigned to Rojo Siete.

A cart was pushed into the room by one of the apprentice mages. Two instructor mages were muttering to each other at the head of the class. The sheet was pulled off and twelve round fishbowls rested on top of the cart.

Each bowl contained a small swimming newt. A ribbon was tied around the rim, holding a fist sized gem in place. When bound to a mage, the newts morphed into dragons. When unbound, they were colorful lizards that lived in the caverns.

Leslie ran a hand across his shaved head, which was also littered in tattoos. He had more covering his body than the other students. Most of them had picked a major, and only gotten the tattoos for the spells in their chosen specialty. Leslie had chosen to get as many as his body could contain. He refused to restrict himself to one range of spells.

“Cory,” Mage Heista said. Cory stood and went to the front of the room. “You are honest and hardworking, for you, a golden dragon, Dorado Veintiocho. He is as dedicated to tasks as you have proven yourself to be.” She handed the fishbowl to him and Cory returned to his seat. Gold dragons were known to be loyal, and the lower the number, veintiocho meaning twenty-eight, the better the dragon was at magic. That’s how the dragons were named, color-which reflected their personality and number-which rated their magic skill.

The elder mage selected which dragon would be paired with a mage, basing it off abilities and qualities. It was a very important event. A poor matching could have dire results.

“Derek,” Mage Heista said. He was the forty-five-year-old. “You are dedicated and wise, always understanding and willing to help another. For you, a white dragon, Blanco Doscientos the most emphatic of all dragons.”

A healer’s dragon, that would be a good fit for Derek. The roll call went on, everyone thrilled with their match. Jerome returned to his desk, a green newt swimming in the bowl.

“They said he likes flying and weather magic, just like me,” Jerome said. He tapped on the glass.

“Leslie,” Mage Heista said. He stood and went to the front of the room. There were four jars left. “You are stubborn and defiant. But your unique character and way of looking at the world will help you do great things.” She paused and the other mage had to nudge her. “You refuse to work as a team, so we have given you a dragon who has also proven difficult to work with. We are hoping together you will both overcome your… adversity toward others and become a strong team.”

She pushed a bowl with a red gem toward him with her fingertips, her own yellow dragon watching carefully, like it was worried the contents in the bowl might attack her. He saw the small red newt nip at the glass where her fingers touched it. She recoiled quickly and gave him a quick smile.

“Please take it,” Mage Heista said.

“Its name?”

“Rojo Siete,” she said.

Leslie’s mouth went dry. He’d heard of this dragon. It had been paired with a mage two years ago, and one week later, it had lit its mage on fire. And killed him.

“You’re giving me the mage killer?” Leslie asked. Surely this was a joke.

“The elder mage has suggested it,” Mage Fiddick said. “Please take your assigned dragon and return to your seat.

With surprisingly steady fingers he picked up the bowl. The newt didn’t attack the glass but swam in what he imagined were angry circles. He carried it to his desk, all the students gawking as he went. He sat down and placed the bowl a good two feet away from him.

He heard several students muttering about how he’d been given the mage killer. So, this was how the mages were going to get rid of him. Kill him off with the angriest meanest dragon they had.

“For Brittney,” Mage Heista continued. “You are always cheerful and eager. For you a blue dragon, Azul Treinta, so you may spread joy everywhere you go.”

He didn’t listen to the last two dragons that were given out, he didn’t even hear them being dismissed until Heista tapped on his desk.

He jumped and looked up at her.

“Time for you to go to your assigned room and meet your dragon,” Heista said. “You’ll be fine.”

Couldn’t he have a few days to prepare? So, he could look up what the other mages had done wrong? So maybe he could live?

“Right,” he said instead. He picked up the bowl and hurried to the hall. The other students were already in their rooms. He looked at the ribbon, it had the number on it for which room he was supposed to go in. He found its match and opened the door.

The room was carved into the mountain the Magesterium was built into. A simple room, with no furniture and only a single lamp hung from above. He placed the bowl in the center of the room and untied the ribbon. He backed up a few feet and kneeled. He clutched either end of the ribbon in his hands, hesitating to tie it around his neck.

The gem was what bound the mage to a dragon. The magic in the gem working like a conduit. Mages could put the gem on a staff, necklace, earing, ring, whatever they chose so long as they kept it close. For now, it would be a necklace.

The small newt went to the top of the bowl and stuck its head out.

“Please don’t eat me,” Leslie said. He let the gem touch his chest, then connected the fasten behind his neck.

The newt glowed intensely and burst from the bowl. Its scales shimmered, going through a cascade of colors, all based in red, but glinting like metal. The beast settled on a form the size of a large dog, lean, four legs, a long tail and neck, all very serpentine. He moved in quick jerky motions and scanned the room. His red beady eyes settled on Leslie.

“My new mage,” the dragon said. His eyes were the same red as the stone around Leslie’s neck. Little spikes ran down the dragon’s back, they flared as if he could control them.

“Hi.” Leslie could think of nothing else to say.

The dragon’s chest heaved and it sat on its haunches. “You’re new. They gave me to a new mage. No one else was up the task, eh?”

“Are you going to kill me?”

The dragon looked at him, as if perplexed. “Why ever would you say that? Are you bad at magic?” He rolled his eyes. Leslie hadn’t thought a dragon could do that. “If they’re giving me to you, you can’t be, so don’t answer that. I’m a level seven, they can’t be assigning my level of skills to a novice. So, are you a born mage? Showed exceptional abilities?”

Did he not know his own reputation? How did Leslie break the news to him that he had been given to a misfit?

“I can read your mind,” the dragon said.

Leslie’s heart sunk.

“It would seem we are both misunderstood misfits,” the dragon said.

Publisher: Wheatmark

Formats:  Paperback, eBook

Twelve-year-old Bobby Dalton doesn't want to grow up. All his life, he has relied on the imaginary games of childhood with his best friends Joe and Max to get him through the tough times. But this all changes when his Seventh-Grade class buries a time capsule to commemorate the end of the 1980s. Now Bobby is being haunted by visions: ghostly doppelgangers of himself, his friends, and others. He calls them "déjà view." Are these visions real, or has his imagination finally gotten away from him? And if they're real, what do they want? Bobby needs to figure this all out to survive his childhood…and his life.

From the author of the award-winning Danger PeakDéjà View is a darkly funny coming-of-age dramedy with a sci-fi twist, cranked up to eleven. But even more, it's at once a pulse-pounding thrill ride and a haunting portrait of paranoia, mental illness, and the unbearable sadness of growing up.

Déjà View Excerpt

by Michael Thomas Perone

I picked the following excerpt from my new novel, Déjà View, because for one, I just think it’s funny, but also, it’s the first sign to the reader that things are not quite right in Bobby’s world, and it foreshadows the strangeness to come. Finally, this excerpt reinforces the major theme of my book, which is the death of childhood.

An hour later, Bobby’s guests were seated around a table in the party room, devouring towers of pizza. Bobby and his friends had a front-row seat to the stage of Chuck E. Cheese’s band, an assortment of animatronic animals: a chicken, a dog, some kind of purple monster that resembled McDonaldland’s Grimace, and, of course, Chuck E. himself. Bobby often wondered why anyone would make a rat the mascot for their kid-friendly pizza restaurant; it seemed unsanitary. It mattered little, though. He came for the food and games, not the dinner entertainment. Every year, these robotic animals would mortify him by crooning “Happy Birthday,” their voices becoming craggier as the robots got older, worn from singing over a thousand birthdays to over a thousand boys and girls.

“Mom,” he asked, leaning in conspiratorially so his friends couldn’t hear, “can we skip the Chuck E. song this year? I’m getting a little too old for it.”

“It’s tradition, sweetie,” she replied in a singsong voice to keep up appearances. Before he could respond, Chuck E. came alive, as if possessed by some ancient curse.

“Hey everyone!” it began. “I hear it’s somebody’s birthday!” Derrick and Joe, seated next to each other, offered sardonic, golfer’s applause. The twitchy robot tried reaching for its guitar as his “bandmates” grabbed their own respective instruments. But the twitching suddenly became a trembling as the robot’s arms flailed past his guitar and bonked the chicken, who in turn bumped into the dog. Now all four automatons were shaking as if caught in their own personal earthquake.

“Uh, is this part of the show?” Derrick asked Joe.

“Nah,” Joe replied. “I think Chuck E.’s had one too many birthdays.”

An announcement came over the loudspeaker that there were some “technical difficulties,” but the perverse show continued unbidden. At once, a comet of sparks burst out of the robotic rodent’s back; for a split second, it resembled a flame-spitting sprinkler. Bobby briefly wondered if the thick red curtain behind the performers would catch fire, but fate was kind, and the sparks receded. In the throes of its last herky-jerky movements, Chuck E. finally keeled over and died, its head collapsing onto the floor with a clunk to stare directly at Bobby with one glowing dead eye.

“Hep-pee...burth-dee...,” the mangled voice managed to eke out one final time. Bobby stared in horror as the beloved childhood mascot bit the big one. He was never a huge fan of these robot shows, but he never meant to attend Chuck E.’s funeral. Bobby turned to the end of his table to spy Derrick and Joe snickering to each other in a private conversation, and he felt an aloneness he had never experienced before.
