Haven't heard of THE SHADOW PRINCE? Check it out!

Every sacrifice has consequences.
Sixteen-year-old Rowan has spent most of his life living among the mortals—learning to control the element of fire, impatiently awaiting the day his vengeful mother, Queen Prisma, will abdicate her throne. When he finally returns to Avalon for his coronation, his mother insists he must first prove his loyalty to the court by completing a secret mission: Kill Kalin, the half-human, half-elemental daughter of the air court king. Willing to do anything to remove his mother from power, he agrees to sacrifice the halfling. He returns to the mortal world with his best friend, Marcus, determined to kill the princess. But as he devises a plan, he starts to question whether or not he's capable of completing such a heinous task. And what price he will pay if he refuses?

On to the interview!

1. What draws you to the paranormal genre? I'm an avid reader of YA and adult paranormal romance. I try to read a book a week. For me, reading is an escape. When my life gets overwhelming, I like to disappear inside a new world. It's easy to do that with paranormal. I also love the swoony men that tend to run rapid in these worlds. ;-p

2. Where do your ideas come from? Everyday life. I've gotten ideas while watching television, driving, showering, conversation with family/friends, etc. For that reason, I always carry a small notebook so I can write them down. I have a spreadsheet on my computer I keep them on. Not all of my ideas are paranormal. They are all over the place.

3. Why did you decide to write a series about elementals? I was researching faeries when I kept coming across the word elemental. I googled the name and happened to stumble upon the sixteenth century works of an alchemist named Paracelsus. He identified the four types of elementals, even giving them names. My brain started spinning with ideas, and eventually, the characters came to life.

4. Can you tell us a little bit about Rowan? Rowan is the heir to the fire court throne. He is a powerful elemental who's spent most of his life away from the court. He's got tons of family drama, but also good friends who help him through it. At times he can be a bit arrogant as most princes are, but he's also thoughtful and loyal to the people he loves.

5. Is Rowan based on anyone you know? Is there a famous actor you could compare him to? I think Rowan is made up of four or five people. It's small facets of their personalities embellished, then fused together to make one person. As far as physical appearance, I think he looks a bit like Luke Grimes on True Blood.

6. What was the hardest scene to write in THE SHADOW PRINCE? It's difficult to answer this without giving anything away. I will say there's a scene where a character is forced (literally) to do something horrible to someone they love. It has a deep impact on both characters in different ways. Because I love both of them so much, it was really hard to go through it with them.

7. Why did you decide to give the novella away for FREE? Because I'm a new author, I thought I would get more readers to give it a chance if it were free. I hope they fall in love with Rowan the way I have and want to know more about his role in the series. I also thought it would be fun to introduce Kalin (my series heroine) through his eyes.

8. What is your favorite quote? I have two. "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." e.e. cummings "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Ralph Waldo Emerson

9. Who are some of your favorite authors? I have a list of what I call my auto-buys. I will read anything by these authors: Gena Showalter, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, and Melissa Marr.

10. What are you working on next? I'd like to finish the first book in an adult science fiction romance series I started last year. I'm about halfway there. Afterwards, I have to write the second book in the MORTAL ENCHANTMENT series. Needless to say, 2014 will be a busy year for me.

Blog Tour-THE SHADOW PRINCE by Bree Despain a Playlist and a Giveaway!

I am so excited to have Bree Despain here with an awesome playlist for THE SHADOW PRINCE Blog Tour! I adored this book! Check it out and make sure to enter the awesome giveaway below!

Haven't heard of  THE SHADOW PRINCE ? Check it out!

Title: THE SHADOW PRINCE
Author: Bree Despain
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Pages: 496
Pub. Date: March 11, 2014
Haden Lord, the disgraced prince of the Underrealm, has been sent to the mortal world to entice a girl into returning with him to the land of the dead. Posing as a student at Olympus Hills High—a haven for children of the rich and famous—Haden must single out the one girl rumored to be able to restore immortality to his race.

Daphne Raines has dreams much bigger than her tiny southern Utah town, so when her rock star dad suddenly reappears, offering her full tuition to Olympus Hills High’s prestigious music program, she sees an opportunity to catch the break she needs to make it as a singer. But upon moving into her estranged father’s mansion in California, and attending her glamorous new school, Daphne soon realizes she isn’t the only student in Olympus who doesn’t quite belong.

Haden and Daphne—destined for each other—know nothing of the true stakes their fated courtship entails. As war between the gods brews, the teenagers’ lives collide. But Daphne won’t be wooed easily and when it seems their prophesied link could happen, Haden realizes something he never intended—he’s fallen in love. Now to save themselves, Haden and Daphne must rewrite their destinies. But as their destinies change, so do the fates of both their worlds.

Now on to the playlist! I'll add vids for the ones I like for the others click on the links to listen.

Music plays a huge role in THE SHADOW PRINCE. Daphne is the daughter of a rock star and wants to be a great musician herself. To Daphne, music is essential to life, while Haden comes from a world where music has been forbidden. However, in order to get close to Daphne, he must immerse himself in her musical world—and open himself up to the repressed emotions that it invokes.

While I’m not completely obsessed like Daphne, I love music, and find it very important to my writing process. I thought it would be fun to share my Shadow Prince writing playlist with you (including links to where you can listen to the songs). Some of these songs are featured in the book, some served as inspiration, and others I just like listening to while I write.

THE SHADOW PRINCE Playlist:

1.       I Will Follow You Into theDark” by Deathcab for Cutie. (This song was inspiration for the book—hence the similarity in the series title.)

2.       Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. (This song is featured in the book when Haden and Daphne have to perform a duet in front of the whole town.)

3.     Requiem for Dying Mothers,Part One” by Stars of the Lid. (This song is also featured in THE SHADOW PRINCE as part of the musical education that Daphne puts together for Haden. It sounds like the embodiment of grief to me.)

4.     Fall in Love” by Phantogram.

5.    The Crooked Kind” by Radical Face. (I love this band so much!)

6.     Sorry” by The Moth and the Flame.

     7.    The Walker” by Fitz and The Tantrums.

8.     More Than Life” by Whitley. (I can’t get enough of this song.)

9.    This Head I Hold” by Electric Guest.

10.     Unbelievers” by Vampire Weekend. (One of my favorite bands!)

11. Divisionary” (Do the Right Thing) by Ages and Ages.

12.    Demons” by The National. (The lead singer of this band was a tiny bit of inspiration for Daphne’s dad.)

13.  About Today” by The National.

14.  Clair De Lune” by Claude Debussy. (Not specifically mentioned in the book, but this would have been the first song that Daphne played for Haden in his musical education.)

Thank you Alexandra! Awesome songs love the Mundian to Bach Ke it's so fitting for the scenes in Mumbai!
