The stunning conclusion to Rae Carson’s New York Times–bestselling Gold Seer trilogy, which Publishers Weekly in a starred review called “Simply terrific.” A historical fantasy brimming with magic, romance, and adventure—perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Sarah Maas, and Westworld.

Leah Westfall, her fiancĂ© Jefferson, and her friends have become rich in the California Territory, thanks to Lee’s magical ability to sense precious gold. But their fortune has made them a target, and when a dangerous billionaire sets out to destroy them, Lee and her friends decide they’ve had enough—they will fight back with all their power and talents. Lee’s magic is continuing to strengthen and grow, but someone is on to her—someone who might have a bit of magic herself. The stakes are higher than ever as Lee and her friends hatch a daring scheme that could alter the California landscape forever. With a distinctive young heroine and a unique interpretation of American history, Into the Bright Unknown strikes a rich vein of romance, magic, and adventure, bringing the Gold Seer Trilogy to its epic conclusion. After a harrowing journey across the country, Leah Westfall and her friends have finally arrived in California and are ready to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush. Lee has a special advantage over the other new arrivals in California—she has the ability to sense gold, a secret known only by her handsome best friend Jefferson and her murdering uncle Hiram.

Lee and her friends have the chance to be the most prosperous settlers in California, but Hiram hasn’t given up trying to control Lee and her power. Sabotage and kidnapping are the least of what he’ll do to make sure Lee is his own. His mine is the deepest and darkest in the territory, and there Lee learns the full extent of her magical gift, the worst of her uncle, and the true strength of her friendships. To save everyone, she vows to destroy her uncle and the empire he is building—even at the cost of her own freedom.

The second epic historical fantasy in the Gold Seer trilogy by Rae Carson, the acclaimed author of The Girl of Fire and Thorns.

Now on to the post!

I was actually going to take a couple day trips to get some pics but real life and work got in the way so I didn't get a chance to go but there's a ton of great pics on the internet and yes I grabbed ones that I can share also check out the gold panning video! I will post photo credit in the photo captions.

When I was planning the trip I emailed Rae to ask for some of the areas she was focusing on in the book and I got her response so I will use her response with the pics for the significance.

Also at the end of book 1 Walk on Earth A Stranger they find their way to Sutter’s Fort, that was pretty much the first place most people went before setting out for their claims so I thought I’d share a couple pics of the as well.

Old Town Sac--LOVE the history museum. They have a GIANT ASS gold nugget or two that's worth a gander. All under lock and key and alarm system, of course. Also some really cute restaurants. You've probably been to all of them. :)

This is what Sacramento looked like in 1849

I love this website! Hysterical Walks most of the pics are of Old Sacramento from Gold Rush Days an event we hold every Labor Day Weekend! Head on over and check out the rest of the pics!

And believe it or not I (Jaime) used to work in Old Sacramento as a Bartender so I couldn’t do a photo post of Old Sac and not use a pic of my bar! I did find an old pic of me sitting outside taking a break from the craziness ignore the glare it was a bad camera lol.

Mormon Island--under water at Lake Folsom now, but there is still a history marker, and I've heard from a few folks that some of the ruins were exposed during the drought. (Though maybe they're covered back up after the rain?)

Jaime- They definitely are covered back up, the drought was in 2015 but I have a news clip from our local TV station KCRA of right after the drought. I also found some images of what it might have looked like.

Here's the news clip and article. There's also a slideshow of some of the things that were exposed.

Coloma--Home of Sutter's Mill. I think you can do gold panning at Marshall Gold Discovery Park. The American River and its various forks appears in the book a lot.

And here's the panning for gold clip from YouTube! It's a popular thing again here in California! But honestly much hasn't changed in the way you pan for gold this is a cool video to watch!

Other locations relevant to the book, like Rough & Ready, are probably outside the radius of a single day's fun.

Here's some pics from Rough & Ready too!

About Rae:

I write books about teens who must do brave things. I'm originally from California, but I now live in Arizona with my husband, who is the smartest and therefore sexiest man I know. My books tend to contain lots of adventure, a little magic and romance, and smart girls who make (mostly) smart choices. I especially love to write about questions I don't know the answers to.

"I used to be one of those girls. The kind who loved to deliver bad news. When I colored my hair, I imagined it seeping into my scalp, black dye pooling into my veins.

But that was the old Lacy. Now, when I cast spells, they are always for good."

16-year-old Lacy believes that magic and science can work side by side. She's a botanist who knows how to harness the healing power of plants. So when her father dies, Lacy tries to stay with her step-mother in Chico, where her magic is good and healing. She fears the darkness that her real mother, Cheyenne, brings out, stripping away everything that is light and kind.

Yet Cheyenne never stays away for long. Beautiful, bewitching, unstable Cheyenne who will stop at nothing, not even black magic, to keep control of her daughter's heart. She forces Lacy to accompany her to Sacramento, and before long, the "old" Lacy starts to resurface.

But when Lacy survives a traumatic encounter, she finds herself faced with a choice. Will she use her powers to exact revenge and spiral into the darkness forever? Or will she find the strength to embrace the light?
