Publisher: Philomel Books

What if America had lost the Revolutionary War? And now lived in constant fear and oppression? From the bestselling author of Nightshade, this is the action-packed final chapter of The Inventor's Secret trilogy

Charlotte has spent her whole life fighting the British Empire, following in the footsteps of her parents and their group of rebels. But when her reunion with her mother laid bare horrible truths about the rebellion, Charlotte knew she had to escape. Now she is on the run, with no idea who the enemy is--or which of her compatriots is truly on her side.

In this action-packed conclusion to the Inventor's Secret trilogy, full of swashbuckling pirates and young ladies who can hold their own against them, Charlotte will need to fight for her life and for her beliefs -- whatever they might be.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Andrea! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books I always love to have you here for a visit! THE TURNCOAT’S GAMBIT was a fantastic finale and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

Thank you so much for having me! It’s fabulous to be here again.

For the readers: can you give us a small recap for The Inventor’s Secret series so far and the characters?

The Inventor’s Secret series follow the adventures of Charlotte and her friends, all of whom are children of adults waging a guerilla-style war against the British Empire.

Set in the early 19th-century, this series takes place in an alternate North American where the British quashed the American Revolution. Charlotte’s story is two-fold: she strives to find her place in the Resistance and she finds herself in the middle of a mystery when an odd stranger, a boy named Grave, becomes her responsibility. As Charlotte uncovers truths about Grave’s past she learns that his fate, and hers, are tied to the future of the Resistance. Charlotte and Grave travel from New York to New Orleans with the help of soldiers, pirates, spies, and tinkers. Romance, battles, gadgets, and twists ensue!

So I know this isn’t the first series you’ve finished but can you tell me how finishing the The Inventor’s Secret series was different from finishing your other series? And what are you working on now?

Finishing this series was different from Nightshade mostly because, as you’ve said, I’d already written a trilogy. My relationship to the characters, however, is unique with each book I write. For reasons that will be obvious to anyone who read Nightshade, I was pretty heartbroken at the end. Satisfied, but heartbroken. The Turncoat’s Gambit has a conclusion that’s intense, but not quite as brutal.

I’m currently working on a new YA series that’s a murder mystery wherein it’s not clear if the perpetrator is human or supernatural.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

My characters are all very insistent that they are real, albeit inhabiting a fictional world. While I believe that being a writer means being an observer of the world people, places, things and all those observations feed into my books, I dont tend to base characters on people I know.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

My favorite character to write was Linnet. She’s a spy and is made of moxie. I loved every scene that featured her that fun was doubled with the appearance of her sexy, French pirate love-interest in book 2.

I’ve never disliked writing a character. If I begin to write a character and am not enjoying the writing, my instinct would be that there is something amiss with that character. Even villains (especially villiains!) should be compelling to write.

What is your favorite passage/scene in THE TURNCOAT’S GAMBIT?

In the world of THE INVENTOR’S SECRET Boston has been razed and in its place is a prison known as the Crucible. Describing the Crucible and what ensues at that site were favorites to write because I’d been anticipating the appearance of this setting for a long time!

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Before I became a full-time writer I was a history professor and my area of specialization was early modern history, particularly the British North American colonies. That history I already knew well, but I needed to do additional research on the European politics of the late 18th and early 19th century, specifically the Napoleonic Wars, to set the stage for THE INVENTOR’S SECRET.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables

What inspired you to write YA?

My favorite books have always been coming of age stories and YA is the realm in which you’re able to truly focus on characters discovering who they are and who they choose to be in the world.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I’ve been sorted on Pottermore. My house: Ravenclaw My Patronus: a little owl

Hey y’all thanks for stopping by to see my Dying to Read post and of course as always I have to give credit to the lovely Jill over at Breaking the Spine for the Waiting on Wednesday Meme!

I just finished book 2 of this series last week (yes I know it came out a few months ago but I didn't get a chance to read it when it first came out). Holy crap did I love it! I think I liked it better than the first book because well pirates were introduced in this story, and I am an idiot for waiting so long to read it.  I can't wait for book 3!

Blog Tour- THE CONJURER'S RIDDLE by Andrea Cremer About Worldbuliding

I am so thrilled to take part in THE CONJURER'S RIDDLE blog tour! I love Andrea Cremer and her books! I have a guest post on Andrea's world building to share with you today

Haven't heard of THE CONJURER'S RIDDLE? Check it out!

The Revolution is beginning–and Charlotte may be on the wrong side.

In this sequel to The Inventor's Secret, Charlotte and her companions escape the British Empire, but they haven't left danger behind. In fact, if they go against the revolutionaries, they face even greater peril.

Charlotte leads her group of exiles west, plunging into a wild world of shady merchants and surly rivermen on the way to New Orleans. But as Charlotte learns more about the revolution she has championed, she wonders if she's on the right side after all. Charlotte and her friends get to know the mystical New Orleans bayou and deep into the shadowy tunnels below the city–the den of criminals, assassins and pirates–Charlotte must decide if the revolution's goals justify their means, or if some things, like the lives of her friends, are too sacred to sacrifice.

This alternate-history adventure series asks the questions: What would have happened if America had lost the Revolutionary War? And what would people be willing to do to finally taste freedom?

Praise for The Inventor's Secret:

Now on to the guest post!

I asked Andrea…. Discuss your world-building process for this series in comparison to your previous books. What kind of research goes into it?

I’m frequently asked about the research I completed for the Nightshade series, particularly with regard to wolf behavior. What’s funny is that in the case of Nightshade I had to do little research at all. As a child, I loved nature programs as much, if not more, than cartoons. I watched every National Geographic, Nova, and Nature special on television – and many of those programs featured wolves. The historical background of Nightshade, the history of witchcraft in Europe and North America, is part of my research specialization in gender, sexuality, and religion in the early modern era. Having completed my Ph.D. in 2007 I was well versed in the area of history that became part of the Nightshade world.

For the Inventor’s Secret the research I undertook was two-fold: first, I had to familiarize myself with parts of history with which I was less familiar. That mostly had to do with what was happening in continental Europe in the early 19th century. I had only the teeniest amount of knowledge of the Napoleonic Wars, and had to read up on that conflict.

Second: I had to research the history of science and technology. Steampunk falls under the category of speculative fiction, and while every author and reader has their own view of what rules apply to specific genres my personal law of writing is that a writer must create rules for her fictional world and then adhere to those rules throughout a series. The central rule I established for The Inventor’s Secret was that the most basic form of a technology had to exist in order for me to put it to use in that world. Therefore, while most of the gadgetry, transportation, and weapons in the novels are well-beyond and fantastically different from what existed in 1816 – the building blocks for such devices were in place: steam power, turbines, magnetism, vacuums. In some cases it was a matter of changing the name of an object not because the technology didn’t exist but because the person who said object was named after hadn’t created that specific object yet. Case in point: the Floating City of New York features the “Great Wheel” a gigantic, gilded wheel that turns on an axis and features passenger cars that carry citizens from the platforms of the city to the island of Manhattan below. An obvious response to this description: you mean a Ferris wheel, don’t you? The answer is yes, except that George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. designed and constructed the first Ferris wheel for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. The wheel was named for Mr. Ferris. Sticking to my rules of world-building, I can have “Ferris” wheels in operation because the basic technology to create such an object existed, however I can’t called it a Ferris wheel because the man for whom it was named hadn’t been born yet.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of world-building in The Inventor’s Secret series is filling in the spaces of history where I’ve erased major events. In this world, the American Revolution failed. The absence of such a pivotal marker in history is like the first falling domino. Without the American Revolution there is no constitution and no Early Republic. There is no President Thomas Jefferson, which means there is no Louisiana Purchase and no Lewis and Clark expedition. The effects of the British winning the war against rebellious American colonists reach far into the future. Imagining what the lasting ramifications would be of such a momentous change in a timeline has been the most engaging piece in writing this series.

I am so stoked to be hosting a spot on the STILL WATERS Blog Tour! This is a suspense filled story and I have an interview with Ash Parsons today! Oh and wanna know something cool? She's played a walker in one of my favorite TV shows The Walking Dead! OMG I want to play a walker!!! Make sure to enter the giveaway below for a copy of the book!

Haven't heard of STILL WATERS? Check it out!

Title: STILL WATERS
Author: Ash Parsons
Pub. Date: April 21, 2015
Publisher: Philomel Books
Pages: 320
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook
A gritty, powerful debut that evokes The Outsiders. You won't be able to look away.

High school senior Jason knows how to take a punch. Living with an abusive father will teach a kid that. But he’s also learned how to hit back, earning a reputation at school that ensures no one will mess with him. Even so, all Jason truly wants is to survive his father long enough to turn eighteen, take his younger sister, Janie, and run away.

Then one day, the leader of the in crowd at school, Michael, offers to pay Jason to hang out with him. Jason figures Michael simply wants to be seen with someone with a tough rep and that the money will add up fast, making Jason’s escape plan a reality. Plus, there’s Michael’s girl, Cyndra, who looks at Jason as if she sees something behind his false smile. As Jason gets drawn deeper into Michael’s game, the money keeps flowing, but the stakes grow ever more dangerous. Soon, even Jason’s fists and his ability to think on his feet aren’t enough to keep his head above water.

Still Waters is an intense, gritty thriller that pulls no punches—yet leaves you rooting for the tough guy. A powerful, dynamic debut.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Ash! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books! STILL WATERS sounds absolutely fantastic and am so happy that you could stop by for a visit! BTW I can’t wait for its sequel!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about STILL WATERS and the characters?

It’s a contemporary suspense story where the protagonist, Jason, does the wrong things for the right reasons, the results of which trap him in an ever-worsening spiral of crime and intrigue. Apart from Jason, I particularly love the characters of Cyndra (the “it’s complicated” love interest) and Clay, Jason’s best friend. I think my favorite thing about the main character, Jason, is that he would appear to be completely badass but isn’t, really. He’s a vulnerable character.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Not exactly. Of course, all writers put some of themselves and other people they know in the story. I gave a version of myself from high school a cameo in the original version, but I ended up editing out that scene.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

My favorite to write was Jason. It’s from his perspective, so that was a good thing! I loved his anger. I don’t know about least favorite. Probably Dwight because he was so unctuous.

What is your favorite passage/scene in STILL WATERS?

Oh my goodness, that’s a hard question!  I really liked writing the climax. I also loved writing the fight scenes. The dialog between Jason and Janie (his little sister) and between Jason and Clay was fun to do. It’s hard to single out a passage because they stitch together.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I didn’t have to do too much research. My spouse is a fire-fighter/EMT so I was able to pick his brain about some things.

Ok and I can’t let you leave before answering this question… I am a HUGE fan of The Walking Dead! What was it like to play a zombie on the show? How many episodes did you do? And did you get to meet any of the cast? And if so who was your favorite to meet and why?

I am also a huge fan! It was incredible, both my spouse and I were on the show. He got to be a “hero” which means he got all the great makeup. However I was pretty much always part of a horde. It was a lot of fun but also hard work. The days (and one night shot I did) are incredibly long – sometimes in excess of 10-12hours. You do the same thing over and over again as they take different angle/distance shots.  If you’re outside it is hot – subtropical hot – if it’s the summer. But it’s also a lot of fun and I’m always fascinated to watch how it all comes together.  It really is a dedicated army of people putting that show on, they’re incredible. I met most of the cast members, but in passing only. I think I was on about 5 episodes. My favorite actors to meet were Andrew Lincoln (Rick) he’s charming, and Norman Reedus (Daryl) who came over on the first day of filming and said hello to us (there were a lot of us that day), which was very nice of him. They’re all delightful. I never worked up the nerve, but I would love to say “Hello, I’m a huge fan!” to Gale Anne Hurd, she’s the exec. Producer and wow, all of her work is just amazing. Similarly, I follow most of the show writers on Twitter and would have loved to talk to them but I never worked up the courage! Also, everyone is actually at work so, it’s not like you stop to chat/ask for autographs, etc.

Lightening Round Questions

Who is your ultimate Book Boyfriend?
I can’t pick! But my first fictional BF was John Ridd from Lorna Doone. I will always have a special place in my heart for him.

What inspired you to write YA?
I taught high school for 6 years and love the variety of work being done in YA.
