Hi Andrea! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books I
always love to have you here for a visit! THE TURNCOAT’S GAMBIT was a fantastic
finale and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers:
can you give us a small recap for The Inventor’s Secret series so far and the
characters?
The Inventor’s Secret series follow the adventures of Charlotte and her
friends, all of whom are children of adults waging a guerilla-style war against
the British Empire.
Set in the early 19th-century, this series takes
place in an alternate North American where the British quashed the American
Revolution. Charlotte’s story is two-fold: she strives to find her place in the
Resistance and she finds herself in the middle of a mystery when an odd
stranger, a boy named Grave, becomes her responsibility. As Charlotte uncovers
truths about Grave’s past she learns that his fate, and hers, are tied to the
future of the Resistance. Charlotte and Grave travel from New York to New
Orleans with the help of soldiers, pirates, spies, and tinkers. Romance,
battles, gadgets, and twists ensue!
So I know this
isn’t the first series you’ve finished but can you tell me how finishing the The
Inventor’s Secret series was different from finishing your other series? And
what are you working on now?
Finishing this series was different from Nightshade mostly because, as
you’ve said, I’d already written a trilogy. My relationship to the characters,
however, is unique with each book I write. For reasons that will be obvious to
anyone who read Nightshade, I was pretty heartbroken at the end. Satisfied, but
heartbroken. The Turncoat’s Gambit has a conclusion that’s intense, but not
quite as brutal.
I’m currently working on a new YA series that’s a murder mystery
wherein it’s not clear if the perpetrator is human or supernatural.
Were any of the
characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
My characters are all very insistent that they are real, albeit
inhabiting a fictional world. While I believe that being a writer means being
an observer of the world – people, places, things – and all those
observations feed into my books, I don’t tend to base
characters on people I know.
Who was your
favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
My favorite character to write was Linnet. She’s a spy and is made of
moxie. I loved every scene that featured her – that fun was
doubled with the appearance of her sexy, French pirate love-interest in book 2.
I’ve never disliked writing a character. If I begin to write a
character and am not enjoying the writing, my instinct would be that there is
something amiss with that character. Even villains (especially villiains!)
should be compelling to write.
What is your
favorite passage/scene in THE TURNCOAT’S GAMBIT?
In the world of THE INVENTOR’S SECRET Boston has been razed and in its
place is a prison known as the Crucible. Describing the Crucible and what ensues
at that site were favorites to write because I’d been anticipating the
appearance of this setting for a long time!
What kind of
research did you have to do for the story?
Before I became a full-time writer I was a history professor and my
area of specialization was early modern history, particularly the British North
American colonies. That history I already knew well, but I needed to do
additional research on the European politics of the late 18th and
early 19th century, specifically the Napoleonic Wars, to set the
stage for THE INVENTOR’S SECRET.
Who is your
ultimate book boyfriend?
Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables
What inspired you
to write YA?
My favorite books have always been coming of age stories and YA is the
realm in which you’re able to truly focus on characters discovering who they
are and who they choose to be in the world.

I’m that person who reads several books at the same time, switching
based on my mood. Currently on my nightstand – The Fireman by

Andrea Cremer began writing novels after a horse broke her foot. Ten

ReplyDeleteI just loved the whole premise behind the trilogy. As you may recall, it is an alternate history story. America lost the Revolutionary War and the British Empire is in charge. This is something that most of us have probably never really thought about, but this book really makes you wonder what it would have been like if we did lose. Would we fight back like our friends in this story have been? Or would we have accepted our fate? I doubt we would have had alchemy and the technology they have, but it still makes you wonder.
