It’s been two years of hell for Derek. His family is totally messed up and he and his sister are barely speaking. He knows he handled it all wrong. Now at college, he has to come to terms with what happened, and the rape culture that he was inadvertently a part of that destroyed his sister's life.

This novel is a companion story to my award-winning SOME BOYS. In this scene, Ian Russell, one of the main characters in Some Boys, meets Derek Lawrence in SOMEONE I USED TO KNOW.

Derek

A knot forms in my gut, a thick and oily clot of guilt. I sink on to the first bench I spot, clutching my middle and trying like hell not to puke. Damn it, I wish to hell I’d beaten the snot out of Victor Patton.
Came close to it.
“Hey, man.”
I twitch and find some guy sitting beside me. No idea where he came from. He’s older than I am, but not by much. Mid-twenties, maybe? Dark hair, dark eyes, some serious muscle.
I nod and shift away, willing my stomach to settle down.
“I’m gonna say something to you,” the guy says. “And you can tell me to buzz off, or you can listen. I see you sitting here, green around the gills, gripping one of those rally flyers, and see a look on your face I know well.”
I shift back to study him. He meets my gaze without flinching, and there’s something in his tone that tells me he’s not kidding.
“Somebody you love got assaulted,” he says, and before I can say anythingbefore I can even think of something to sayhe adds, Me too.
I stare at him in disbelief. Are we supposed to do some kind of male bonding over rape...some sort of weird bro hug and then share our feelings? That kink in my gut unclenches, and my breakfast comes up and out. I manage to turn away before I ruin this guy’s day and spew into the bushes behind the bench. It takes a few minutes. When I’m finally empty and want to crawl into the gutter to die, the guy shoves a bottle of water into my field of vision.
“Take it. Keep it.”
Grateful, I crack the seal, chug, and rinse out my mouth. Then I take a nice gulp, sit back on the bench, and wipe my mouth. “Thanks,” I offer a few minutes later, when I’m sure I’m not dying.
“Yeah, no big.”
There’s a long pause. “Girlfriend?” he asks after a minute. And it takes me another minute to figure out he’s asking who I know that got raped. I shake my head.
“Sister.”
“Oh, man. I’m sorry.”
I only nod. What else is there to say? In silence, we watch the perky girl with the clipboard chase down two guys on Rollerblades to sign up for the rally.
He snorts out a laugh. “That girl has some serious fun attitude.”
I laugh, too. “That’s an oxymoron, no?”
Shrugging, he says, “Maybe. Never could keep those lit terms straight.”
That makes me wonder about him. “You’re not a student?”
“No,” he admits. “I graduated a few years ago. Degree in engineering. I work in the city now.”
“So what are you doing here?”
He sighs and looks back to the quad where Perky Girl’s got another pair of guys on the hook for rally duty. “Over there. Under the Rock Stock tent. Black boots.”
I scan the area, find the tent, and see a bunch of people under it. But the black boots do it for me. The girl is hot, like off-the- charts hot. Long wild hair, dark sunglasses, jeans, and a black shirt that’s held together with a series of metal rings. She looks like the lead singer from some hard rock band.
“Oh! I’m sorry. Was she
“Yeah. Back in high school. By my friend. At a party she only went to because she hoped I’d be there.”
“I'm sorry.” I sigh.
“I came over here to talk to you because you looked like well, like a guy about to puke.”
My face gets hot. I swallow another gulp of water and look away. But I can’t deny I’m curious. “How do you...” Deal with it? Avoid killing the guy who did it? I wave my hand, trying to fill in that blank but coming up empty.
He angles his head, studying me. “Get over my guilt?”
Okay. That works, too.
He takes another look at the girl in the black boots and shrugs.
“Still working on it. Being here is part of it. She’s doing the keynote speech at the rally. Took me a while, but I finally figured out that therapy’s not so bad, either.”
My parents wanted us all to go to therapy, but I said no way. Maybe that was a mistake. “Can I ask you something?”
The guy nods.
I swallow more water. “You ever say something you can’t take back? Something that made her hate you.”
He grins and rolls his eyes. “God, yes. I can’t watch a Star Wars movie without wanting to kick my own ass.”
“Huh?”
He waves a hand. “Long story. I was a real dick to her, embarrassing her in front of my friends so they wouldn’t turn on me. She forgave me. Somewhere along the line, I figured out how to forgive myself so I could be the man she deserves.”
Forgive myself. That’s exactly what Brittany said. I consider that for a couple of minutes and then shake my head. “I gotta go.” I stand up. “Thanks for the water and for I wave a hand. You know.
“Yeah. No problem. Hope we see you at the rally. Trust me, she’s something.” He jerks a thumb toward the girl in the black boots, and I don’t doubt him for a second.
“Yeah. Maybe.”
He extends a hand. “Ian.”
I shake it. “Derek,” I say. “Thanks again.”
“Here.” He fishes through his pockets and comes out with a business card. “My cell number. I can help. If you want.”
I take off, tucking the card into my pocket along with the blue-and-white flyer. I don’t even know why I’m keeping them. It’s not like there’s any way Ashley’s gonna forgive me. I’m not even sure I can forgive myself. I’ll never be the hero again in her eyes.

Books to Read After SOMEONE I USED TO KNOW

My latest novel, SOMEONE I USED TO KNOW, deals with the aftermath of sexual assault. It’s certainly not the first novel that addresses rape; Laurie Halse Anderson’s SPEAK is the first title that comes to everyone’s mind. But rape is a complicated issue with lots of facets there’s toxic masculinity, misogyny, sexism, and so on that can impact a survivor’s healing process. Here are some books to read after SOMEONE that cover those facets.

Here are some more:

1.        C.Desir’s Fault Line
2.      Wrecked by Maria Padian
3.      Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu
4.     The Way I Used To Be by Amber Smith
5.     The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult

Patty Blount grew up quiet and somewhat invisible in Queens, NY, but found her voice writing smart and strong characters willing to fight for what’s right. Today, she’s the award-winning author of edgy, realistic, gut-wrenching contemporary and young adult romance. Still a bit introverted, she gets lost often, eats way too much chocolate, and tends to develop mad, passionate crushes on fictional charactersand actors like Gilles Marini.and Sam Heughan. "My Firstlife is over, but my Everlife is only now beginning."

With her last living breath, Tenley "Ten" Lockwood made her choice and picked her realm in the Everlife. Now, as the war between Troika and Myriad rages, she must face the consequences.

Because Ten possesses a rare supernatural ability to absorb and share light, the Powers That Be have the highest expectations for her future—and the enemy wants her neutralized. Fighting to save her Secondlife, she must learn about her realm from the ground up while launching her first mission: convincing a select group of humans to join her side before they die. No pressure, right?

But Ten's competition is Killian, the boy she can't forget—the one who gave up everything for her happiness. He has only one shot at redemption: beating Ten at a game she's never even played. As their throw-downs heat up, so do their undeniable feelings, and soon, Ten will have to make another choice. Love…or victory.

Now on to the post!

Top 5 favorite scenes in Lifeblood and why?

1.      When Ten learns to send messages to other spirits via the comm inside her wrist.  Her typos crack me up!

2.      When Killian and Ten see each other for the first time since her training as a Conduit/Laborer began in Troika.  They are competing to win the same soul, and should be spewing hate, but their desire for each other is palpable.

3.      The “10 Things” list Killian sends Tenoh my gosh!  Talk about melting my heart.

4.      When Ten begins to understand the power of the Grid (a network of mental doorways and connections between the people of Troika).  She is able to see and talk with and HUG a certain beloved Laborer...

5.       The moment Killian says “Then let us begin.”  I can’t explain further without giving away plot.  Just know that those four words will change EVERYTHING!

Blog Tour- TEMPER by Beck Nicholas

Hey y'all! I have a guest post from Beck Nicholas, author of the awesome sci-fi book TEMPE! Oh and stick around for the giveaway!

Haven't heard of TEMPER?Check it out!

Title: TEMPER (Lifer #2)
Author: Beck Nicholas
Pub. Date: February 23, 2016
Publisher: Month9Books
Pages: 300
Formats: Paperback, eBook
FREEDOM COMES WITH A PRICE.

Free from the spaceship and reunited with Samuai, Asher should be happy. But thoughts of her dead family weigh heavily on her mind.

Things worsen when temper problems in camp lead to a murder. When Asher volunteers to get the drug need to calm people down, tension ignites.

Loyalties are questioned.

Jealousy rears its head. Sparks fly.

And when rumor of a second ship hits close to home, all bets are off.

Have the aliens returned? Is this the end of everything Asher has ever known?

Now on to the post! I asked Beck...

If you had to evacuate earth on a spaceship right now what is the one thing that you MUST take with you?

Thanks for having me here today. Temper revolves around the aftermath of the Upheaval, where they believe aliens triggered earthquakes and other natural disasters. This resulted in the launch of the Pelican – a multigenerational spaceship – to give humanity another chance.

If I had to leave Earth right now I’d pack my family first. As much as they regularly drive me insane I’d want them in this fresh start. I’d bring my adored dog, Mat. He’s a very well-behaved border collie cross and loves inside, so the internals of a spaceship would suit him just right. As long as he could be with people and be fed it would be bliss. Although he’d be hanging out to get to another planet to chase a ball.

I’d take my photos and stories and the couple of pieces of jewellery my mother left me to remind me of her. I’d load my ereader with books for the journey and I would need something to write my stories down on. Which means I’d need my critique partners and writing friends too.

I should take my running shoes but they might have to stay behind in favour of my chocolate frog that I’m saving from my trip to Harry Potter World. Also I’d need some Fruchocs – a south Australian delicacy of apricot/peach dipped in chocolate. Maybe I’d need those running shoes after all.

About Beck:

I always wanted to write.  I’ve worked as a lab assistant, a pizza delivery driver and a high school teacher but I always pursued my first dream of creating stories. Now, I live with my family near Adelaide, halfway between the city and the sea, and am lucky to spend my days (and nights) writing young adult fiction.

Blog Tour- UNHOOKED by Lisa Maxwell Talks about Good and Evil in Neverland & A Giveaway!

I am so excited to be hosting a spot on blog tour for UNHOOKED by Lisa Maxwell I loved this book if you haven't yet check out my review HERE. I have a guest post about the good and evil in Neverland to share with you! And make sure to enter the awesome giveaway!

Haven't heard of UNHOOKED? Check it out!

Title: UNHOOKED
Author: Lisa Maxwell
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Pages: 352
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Formats: Hardcover & eBook
Find it: Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | iBooks
From “talented wordsmith” (Publishers Weekly) Lisa Maxwell comes a lush, atmospheric fantasy novel filled with twists and turns about a girl who is kidnapped and brought to an island inhabited by fairies, a roguish ship captain, and bloodthirsty beasts.

For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home. Her mother believes they are being hunted by brutal monsters, and those delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. Gwen’s only saving grace is that her best friend, Olivia, is with her for the summer.

But shortly after their arrival, the girls are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and dragged to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey. And Gwen begins to realize that maybe her mother isn’t so crazy after all…

Gwen discovers that this new world she inhabits is called Neverland, but it’s nothing like the Neverland you’ve heard about in stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through your fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and tries to find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the captivating pirate who promises to keep her safe.

Caught in the ultimate battle between good and evil, with time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to finally face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But can she save Neverland without losing herself?

Now on to the post!

I asked Lisa. What made you want to flip Neverland on its heels? Why make the villain the good guy and Peter the bad guy?

I’m not sure that anyone is really good or bad in the moral sense in UNHOOKED. There are people who want to kill Gwen, and people who want to kill her more. They all have their reasons for wanting to kill her, and they all believe their own reasons are noble. Gwen, of course, disagrees.

Part of the reason I wanted to flip the usual understanding of good and evil in Neverland is that Barrie already did the job for me. If you go back to the source material—Peter and Wendy¬—Captain Hook is a nasty piece of work, but Peter Pan is not exactly someone you’d want taking your kids out the window. In Barrie’s book, Peter Pan is not a “good guy,” in the usual sense of the word. He’s the hero, but in the original story, Peter Pan only cares about his own amusement, not the lives of Wendy, John, Michael, or any of his boys. In fact, there is a line that suggests he kills off his own boys when they get too old or there are too many of them. The truth is, in Barrie’s story, most kids don’t come back from Neverland, and they also don’t go on living happily forever on those magic shores. In Barrie’s story, the lost boys are expendable—there’s always a new crop showing up.
Part of Barrie’s story that I think has gotten lost is that his Peter Pan has no sense of empathy. The character doesn’t care about human life—only about his own amusement and how clever he is. He’s manipulative and often lies to the children to get his way. In Peter Pan, Barrie created the perennial child—he’s joy and adventure, a child who laughs each time like it’s the first time he’s ever laughed and who still has all of his baby teeth. That’s charming, but Peter Pan is also basically an overgrown two-year old. If you really think about what it would be like to have a two-year-old the size of a ten-year-old? No thanks.

Someone once said that all toddlers are sociopaths, and I’m fairly certain from my own experience that it might be true. ;O)  The thing is, when kids are that young, you have to teach and model empathy. For a two-year-old, it’s all about wanting things and wanting them NOW, and Barrie’s Peter Pan is very much like that. He’s not necessarily evil, but he is basically a sociopath—he wants what he wants, and the safety or happiness of others is irrelevant.

But another Part of Peter Pan’s heartlessness in Barrie’s book comes from the fact that his version of Neverland inspires forgetting. All of the characters—Wendy and her brothers, included—start to forget who they were before once they are in Neverland. Like most very small children, Peter Pan doesn’t have long-term memory. In the source book, Peter forgets about the three siblings on their way to Neverland, and leaves them flying along without a guide for days. After he finally kills Hook—his great nemesis—he doesn’t even remember him. “I always forget them after I kill them,” he says. In short, life in the Neverland of Barrie’s book is all about the moment, not about the past or future. That means it’s full of adventure, but it’s also full of darkness.

In my Neverland, I wanted to play with that idea of the island inspiring forgetting—something that most popular versions of the story do away with—because I wanted to explore what makes us human. If you can’t remember the emotional impact of a death, can you value life? If you lose your memories, who are you and who might you become? My Pan has been in Neverland for a loooong time. But then, so has the pirate. While there’s definitely a character you probably will root for more, the lines between good an evil get blurred in UNHOOKED. All that’s left is what you can do and what you will do, and it’s a question that each of the characters wrestle with in their own way.

Check out a teaser graphic or two!
