On a hot summer night, a screech of brakes and shattering glass changes two lives forever.

Liv wakes in the hospital, confused when they call her Morgan. She assumes it’s a case of mistaken identity, yet when the bandages come off, it’s not her face in the mirror anymore. It’s her best friend Morgan’s.

Morgan always seemed to have the perfect life, yet Liv must navigate endlessly disturbing secrets of the criminal and murderous variety—and a romance that feels like a betrayal. Torn between the boy she loved as Liv and the boy she’s grown to love as Morgan, Liv still has to survive Morgan’s last request.

Excerpt

“Just let this be the second secret you keep for me,” I say then. “Thanks for not telling Nathan, by the way.”

Clay leans his arm along the door frame, tilting his head slightly out the open window as if he needs the air. “You couldn’t pay me to talk to that jackass lately.”

“You two fighting?”

“No. He’s just . . . Nathan.” He hesitates. “I wasn’t going to tell you this . . .”

“What?” Anything that could divert me from my precarious situation, even momentarily, seems like a welcome distraction.

“He brought a girl home last night.” From his tone he expects this to destroy me.

And sure, there’s a twinge because before, I thought Nathan and I had a soul-deep connection. Fact is, he’s a little immature, a lot selfish, and I just never noticed. They say love is blind, but I’d say that infatuation is blind, and love is tolerant. When you really love someone, it’s not that you can’t see the flaws; you’re just willing to forgive them.
Belatedly I realize he’s expecting a reply. “I’m not surprised. Nathan is used to getting what he wants just like you’re using to giving things up. Oh, I was going to ask him to drop this off, but since you’re here . . .” I fish in my backpack for his hoodie.

Yes, I’ve been carrying it for like four days. First I hesitated to wash it, but I didn’t want to be a sad girl who’s still smelling her ex’s clothes a month later. Then I didn’t return it because that felt like final acceptance, —superstitious, I know. Over is over, and random articles of clothing don’t change anything.

“You didn’t need to bother with that. I’ve had it forever.”

“All the more reason for you to have it back,” I say.

“Do you need to be this cool about everything?” he bursts out. “I know you have to be scared and hurt—”

“Yeah, I am, all those things. And yes, I have to be this way, or I can’t function. Why are you even here anyway?” The pain and frustration cracks my voice, and I really wish I was anywhere else.

“Because I’m worried about you.”

“Then stop. I accepted your decision, now respect mine. It’ll be easier if I don’t have to see you.”

His jaw clenches, showing the force he’s exerting to bite back whatever he wants to say.

Finally he just takes his hoodie but he pauses with his hand on the door. “You know you can call me, right? Even if we’re not together, I’d never let anyone hurt you. One call and I’m there.”

My heart feels like it’ll crack in two, but I’m resolute; I have to be. “I already deleted your number.”

Author: Ann Aguirre
Release Date: July 25, 2017
Pages: 368
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

The Razorland saga continues. Since the war ended, Tegan has dreamed of an epic journey, so when she has the opportunity to sign on as ship's doctor, she can't wait. It's past time to chart her course. Millie Faraday, the kindest girl in the free territories, also yearns to outrun her reputation, and warrior-poet James Morrow would follow Tegan to the ends of the earth.

Their company seems set, but fate brings one more to their number. Tegan will battle incredible odds while aiding Szarok, the Uroch vanguard, who has ventured forth to save his people. Szarok is strange and beautiful, like a flower that blooms only in the dark. She shouldn't allow him close, as such a relationship is both alien and forbidden. But through stormy seas and strange lands, she will become stronger than she ever knew.

Now on to the interview!

Ann Aguirre Interview Two Chicks Interview 7/17/2017

Hey Ann!! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat it’s been a while! VANGUARD was freaking AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the events leading up to VANGUARD and the characters? Will we see Deuce and Fade or is this story all Tegan’s?

The book takes place about ten months after the closing events of Horde, though certainly before the fairy-tale style epilogue. Tegan has been studying with Dr. Wilson, and then a pivotal event occurs, freeing her to pursue a grand adventure of her own. This is definitely Tegan’s story, but there are a few scenes with Deuce and Fade, and yes, you do get to find out whether their first child is a boy or a girl and what the baby’s name is!

It’s been 4 years since HORDE! Why did you decide to re-visit the Razorland series after a fairly long break?
I got so much reader correspondence asking what happened to Tegan and whether she eventually ended up with James Morrow, that I jokingly said, "If there's enough interest, I'll write a companion novel!" To be honest, I intended to leave that open and up to reader imaginations, but then my editor asked if I would actually do that, because it seemed there was sufficient demand for a companion story. After some reflection, I decided I would be happy to tell Tegan's story. And then I did. :)

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Definitely not. While I do pull dialogue from the way real people talk, my characters live only my head.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

My favorite is Szarok by far. My least favorite POV was James Morrow, but that’s just because he’s up against Tegan and Szarok.

What is your favorite passage/scene in VAGUARD?

I love the scene where Tegan and Szarok are stranded on the island and she teaches him to kiss.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

A lot of ‘stranded on a non-desert island’ type stuff. I had to figure out what resources they would plausibly have in a skerry located up near Newfoundland.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Varen from Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

What inspired you to write YA?

My kids. They were asking me when they were around thirteen and fifteen, “When are you going to write something we can read?” and the Razorland trilogy was born. I discovered I really liked writing for teens and just kept going.

ISBN: 978-1250024640

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Edie Kramer has a score to settle with the beautiful people at Blackbriar Academy. Their cruelty drove her to the brink of despair, and four months ago, she couldn't imagine being strong enough to face her senior year. But thanks to a Faustian compact with the enigmatic Kian, she has the power to make the bullies pay. She's not supposed to think about Kian once the deal is done, but devastating pain burns behind his unearthly beauty, and he's impossible to forget.

In one short summer, her entire life changes, and she sweeps through Blackbriar, prepped to take the beautiful people down from the inside. A whisper here, a look there, and suddenly... bad things are happening. It's a heady rush, seeing her tormentors get what they deserve, but things that seem too good to be true usually are, and soon, the pranks and payback turns from delicious to deadly. Edie is alone in a world teeming with secrets and fiends lurking in the shadows. In this murky morass of devil's bargains, she isn't sure who—or what--she can trust. Not even her own mind...

Now on to the interview!

Hi Ann! First I want to say welcome to back to Two Chicks on Books! It’s been a while since we had a visit from you and I’m excited about MORTAL DANGER!! Thanks for stopping by to answer my questions!

Thanks for inviting me!

Where did the idea for MORTAL DANGER come from?

I pitched Mortal Danger as Doctor Faustus meets Mean Girls, set in a dark world of secret societies, twisted bargains, and forbidden love. The heroine is named Edie, and the hero is called Kian. The story's insanely complex in what my agent calls the “down the rabbit hole” way; that's where everything starts relatively normal, but the deeper in you get, the wilder and more unusual the world becomes.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

No, I really don’t do that. Occasionally I’ll bits of dialogue I’ve heard in real life or a scenario that inspired me but I don’t lift real people and put them in books.

How long did it take you to write MORTAL DANGER?

I honestly can’t remember. I wrote it last summer.

What is for favorite passage/scene in MORTAL DANGER?

The scene where Kian confesses his feelings in the car. *swoon* (Not sure if you want the actual excerpt)

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I questioned my friend and colleague Cara McKenna quite a lot about Boston to make sure I didn’t get anything horribly wrong. I also read a ton of mythology, stories, and urban legends, then cherry picked the creepiest ones to include in the book. There’s plenty more to come, though.

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Oh, I have a huge list. Whenever I get on a train or a plane, I love relaxing with a book. Right now I’m reading AllLined Up by Cora Carmack. Other titles include:

And that’s not remotely all; I have a huge TBR.

Who is your ultimate Book Boyfriend?

Man, this is a hard one. But I’m going with Micah from The Art of Lainey by PaulaStokes. He’s smart. He’s a little bad. He’s got a Mohawk. He wants to be a pastry chef. Nuff said.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on book 2 in the Immortal Game trilogy, tentatively titled Public Enemies.

Lightning Round Questions

Twitter or Facebook?

Favorite Superhero?

Iron Man.

Favorite TV show?

Orphan Black.

Sweet or Salty?

Can it be both? Sweet & Salty popcorn is perfect.

Any Phobias?

Clowns. Crunchy bugs. Heights. Closed spaces. Crowds. Mannequins. It’s actually faster to ask me what I’m not afraid of. Heh.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Summer or Fall Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Guardians of the Galaxy.
