Jaime's Review of Starling By Lesley Livingston

Starling
Lesley Livingston
Hardcover: 352 pages
Release Date: August 28, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
ISBN: 0062063073
Source: ARC from the Sacramento/San Francisco Book Review
Rating: Obsessed
From Goodreads.

"Love is just the beginning... of the end." Mason Starling is a champion fencer for Gosforth Academy, but she’s never had to fight for her life. Until now. When a ferocious storm rips through Manhattan and unleashes terrifying creatures onto Gosforth’s campus, Mason barely escapes alive. Without help from the mysterious stranger who appeared in the midst of the storm, she might not have made it at all. But now, in the aftermath, Mason’s life begins to spin dramatically, mystically out of control, and the only one who seems able to help her is the stranger who can remember nothing but his name: Fennrys Wolf. As Mason and Fenn uncover more about Fenn’s past and the strange events that surround them, they realize that Mason’s family — and its dark allegiance to the ancient Norse gods — is at the center of everything. A predetermined fate seems to be closing in on Mason, but is it possible to change one’s destiny? Readers who fell in love with Lesley Livingston’s Wondrous Strange trilogy and those who love Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series will be captivated by the sweeping romance and pulse-pounding action of Starling.

Have you ever read a book where you were completely in love with one guy and then out of nowhere someone creeps up on you and you end up falling for him too? Well that happened to me in Lesley Livingston’s Wondrous Strange series with Fennrys Wolf. Don’t get me wrong I still adore Sonny but, Fenn just captured a big piece of my heart. So when I found out that Fenn was getting his own book?!?! I literally jumped for joy!!!! I was really hoping something good would happen for him because well….. let’s just say he got the short end of the deal in Tempestuous.

So now that I’ve rambled on to my review. Starling was everything I expected it to be! Lesley is an amazing writer and I love that she brought so many areas of mythology to light. The story mainly has Norse myth but there’s some Greek, Celtic, Egyptian, as well as some others I can’t quite remember right now lol. I adored the MC Mase she’s a pretty badass chick and when we first see Fenn he’s fighting beasts naked! Yep you read that right he’s stark freaking naked fighting beasts with his sword! (Minds out of the gutter!) I mean an actual sword made of metal lol. Ok sorry had to take a moment to *swoon* back to it.

So there’s this prophecy and together Fenn and Mase have to try and stop it or really bad things will happen. Like end of the world bad things. And her family is playing a big role in this prophecy. I hated her dad, and one of her brothers is a total douche; her other brother? I really liked him and if Fenn didn’t have my heart Roth definitely would. Mase has this…. I guess I would call her a friend Heather and she is freaking hilarious she has some of the best lines in the book! I mean check this “I think the real Cupid is probably more like some psycho juvie with dark glasses and a taser.” Ok yeah I’m done proclaiming my love for this book since that is what this review turned out to be a rambling love-fest. Let’s just say I am completely obsessed and can’t wait for book 2 because some crazy things happen towards the end!

I had a really hard time picking a passage to share I had like 20 post-it’s in this one but I think I picked a pretty good one ;)

For a moment, everyone just stood around. Then a heavy knock on the door overhead made them all jump.

“Let me in,” came a gruff voice.

“No way, man!” Rory exclaimed.

Toby hesitated.

“Let him in, Toby!” Mason said. “He just saved us!”

The fencing master stood there, torn.

“Toby?” Heather looked at him.

“Aw, Hell…”

Toby wrenched the pipe out of the door’s ring handles as Rory shook his head in disgust. The stranger heaved the door open and climbed down, pulling the door shut behind him. At the bottom, he leaned heavily on the stair ladder for support, breathing harshly. In the beam from Toby’s flashlight, all of the contours of his body stood out in sharp relief. He looked like a Michelangelo sculpture, Mason thought.

“Bar the door,” he said.

“Do it,” Toby barked at Rory, handing him the metal pipe. “And somebody find Beowulf here some pants.”

“It’s Fennrys Wolf,” the young man rasped. “And yeah…pants would be nice.”

So um *clears throat* yeah this one is a MUST READ!!!!! LOL J

Authors Are Rockstars- Announcing The Bloggers!

First, we just want to say thank you all so much for signing up for the tour. The response was AWESOME! So awesome in fact that we just couldn’t pick everyone as we only have 74 available openings on the tour at the moment.

We are still waiting to hear back from a few authors we reached out to recently thanks to some of the write-in choices and some we initially reached out to. And as we just added another author to the tour yesterday, after sign-ups closed, we may get a few more author responses.

So, while we have our 74 bloggers who are guaranteed a match with an author – and yes, we made almost all of those match-ups already, but as it’s not finalized we are waiting to announce that later this week along with the schedule – we have chosen 15 alternates.

Should we get additional authors on board, the alternates would have a choice to partner with one of them, or should one of the assigned bloggers have to back out for any reason, they would step in to host the author for that stop.

But we are so incredibly excited to already have 78 amazing rockstar authors on board for the tour. Which means that each day of the tour will have at least two stops.

And so, without further ado, let us present to you the 74 blogs and their bloggers that will be hosting a stop on the tour.

And on to the excerpt!

Asher laughed and she shot him a confused look.  “After all you’ve been through, you’re worried about the polar bears in the City.”  He tilted his head, peering at her in the dim light.  “You know, that compassion is actually what makes you a skilled fighter.”

Fi felt herself blush, embarrassed at the compliment.  She ducked her head.

“I saw you,” he said, “you always parried rather than attacked, given the choice.  I see that your strategy is to lock them up or wear them down.  Always avoiding the violence, the kill.  Yet you can kill if you must,” he nodded toward Sean, “to save your Family.”   Asher inclined his head in small bow.  “I’m honored to have fought with you.”

Fi was shocked.  “But you had to save me!  You had to save both of us!”

He laughed.  “Well I’ve been training for this fight all my life,” he said, patting his sword lying.  “I’m assuming you have had less than a year.”

Fi nodded, unsure exactly why she was telling Asher so much about herself.

“Besides,” he teased, “I’m pretty sure you’d have had Sid’s number even if I hadn’t come along, am I right?”  He held his right hand up for a high-five and she grudgingly reached her hand out and slapped his.

“Oh yeah,” he said, and Fi started to laugh out loud and quickly covered her mouth with her hand.  She glanced over at Sean, but he was still snoring.  “Seriously,” Asher whispered, “You are pretty badass.  It’s a good thing you’re little or I would be afraid of you.”
She blushed again, feeling pleased and confused at the same time.  Why was she blushing every five minutes?

Make sure to check out all the other tour stops for more excerpts, reviews, guest posts, and chances to win! Also book 2 Seeds of War is out so go get that too :)

Cover Reveal Inbetween By Tara Fuller

Hey y’all! We have another cover reveal today brought to you from the amazing peeps at Entangled Publishing and author Tara Fuller! Inbetween has a new look and it’s absolutely gorgeous! Also Tara is posting the prologue on her website so get a sneak peek into Inbetween before you can buy it!

Here’s the synopsis-

Since the car crash that took her father’s life two years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option. It’s not easy being dead; especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left. His soul.

And Here’s the gorgeous new cover!

About The Author: Tara Fuller writes novels. Some about grim reapers. Some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novels and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mocha's. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.

With the new authors added bloggers you will be allowed ONE chance to change your original picks. If you want to make a change to your original picks, please email us at the address above.

The Tour
  • The tour will run from August 1st through August 31st. Each day of the month will have one, two or three tour stops.
  • The tour will start at both Fiktshun and Two Chicks On Books and end on both our blogs. We will have a kick-off post + giveaway with all the stops and we will also each have posts dedicated to authors that are our rockstars. And on the final day of the tour, we will have a wrap-up post along with posts for the final two authors we will be spotlighting.
  • All the rest of the days will be for you to show your love and appreciation for those authors you call rockstars.
The Rules, Requirements and other details

Rules
  • You must complete the sign-up form in order to be considered.
  • Signing up in no way guarantees you will be chosen for a tour stop. (We’re so sorry that we won’t be able to include everyone!)
  • Being accepted as a tour stop does not guarantee you will get your first choice of author.
  • If you are chosen you must respond with your acceptance and with your stop preferences and/or interview questions or guest post topics within 24 hours after notification. If you do not respond we will be forced to choose someone else.
Requirements
  • To be considered to host any author you must have reviewed their books. (See review requirements immediately below.) And if you have rated their books, ratings cannot be less than four stars, unless you provide a compelling reason why you should still be considered. Remember, you’re picking authors you think are rockstars!
  • To host an author with three or more books published, you must have reviewed at least two of their books. (We will be checking your blogs and Goodreads.)
  • To host an author with one or two published books, you must have reviewed at least one of their books.
  • To host an author whose books have yet to be published, you must be anxiously awaiting the book’s release and have either posted about that book on your blog or provide a compelling reason in the form below.
Other details
  • Selections will be made based on a number of criteria including the best match-up between author and blogger, blogger’s overall reviews, and blogger’s reputation and trustworthiness.
  • Blog following, page views or Twitter following will not be a deciding factor in the selection process.
  • Blog longevity, number of reviews, types of reviews - (bash-free is a must) – will be considered when making our selections.
  • Blogger “friends” will not be given preference. It’s about making the best matches between authors and bloggers on the tour.
  • Writing in an author does not guarantee that author will be included on the tour. They may have already been contacted and either are unavailable or have yet to respond, or all tour stops may already have been filled.
  • Blogger participation announcements will be made both by email and in a post on both Fiktshun and Two Chicks On Books on Wednesday, July 18th.
Giveaways: For tour stops that will be hosting an author or publisher donated giveaway prize, there can be no mandatory tasks aside from leaving a blog comment. And there can be up to two extra entry opportunities. As a thank you to the authors you are hosting you may want to make those extra entries about the authors but it is not mandatory.
There will be no requirements/restrictions for tour stops that choose to host their own giveaways.

Dates to know

Tour dates: August 1st – 31st
Sign-up ends: July 15th

Jaime's Review of Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

Throne of Glass
Sarah J. Maas
Hardcover: 416 pages
Release Date: August 7, 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children’s
ISBN: 1599906959
Source: ARC from the publisher
Rating:Obsessed!!!!!!!
From Goodreads.

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men—thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the kings council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Ok so y’all are probably sick of me saying how much I love High Fantasy. Well too bad…. I LOVE HIGH FANTASY!!!!! Lol and Throne of Glass is no exception! It’s freaking fantastic!!!

Sarah J. Maas is an amazing writer! Her world building is very descriptive and beautiful and her characters? Oh my don’t get me started on her characters! I loved Chaol and am Team Chaol all the way! He is gorgeous, brave, smart, and sarcastic some of my favorite qualities in a man. But there’s another one or two characters that I loved too! Dorian which sucks by the way; I wanted to hate him! I wanted him to be an ass so I could hate him but, I couldn’t not one bit. He was so sweet and loving and gorgeous as well and damn it he made loving Chaol and only Chaol hard. Also there is a thief named Nox that stole a tiny piece of my heart but thank goodness not Celaena’s because if that would have happened we would have had a very awkward love square lol.

Speaking of Celaena she’s one of the most kick ass heroines I’ve encountered in a long time! I mean she’s an assassin so she’s badass but, what I loved about her was that not only was she tough but, she had morals and cared about people and things like animals and social issues too!

Ooh and the story itself? It’s absolutely wonderful!!!!! There’s romance, court intrigue, danger, magic, and crazy plot twists! It’s one of the best stories I’ve read in 2012! I seriously can’t wait for book 2 and psst here’s a tip too Sarah wrote 3 prequel novellas and they’re only 99cents! So go get those too!

I chose one of my most favorite scenes from the book to share with y’all and it’s where I really think I started to fall for Chaol!

He stared her down, quiet for a moment. “Are you that arrogant?” She bristled, but he went on. “It was foolish to spar with you just now. I’ll admit that I hadn’t realized you’d be that good. Thankfully, no one noticed. And do you know why Lillian?” He took a step closer, jis voice lowering. “Because you’re a pretty little girl. Because you’re a nobody jewel thief from a small city in Fenharow. Look around.” He half-turned to the other champions. “Is anyone staring at you? Are any of them sizing you up? No. Because you’re not real competition. Because you don’t stand between them and whatever freedom or wealth they’re looking for.”

“Exactly! It’s insulting!”

“It’s smart that’s what it is. And you’re going to keep a low profile throughout this entire competition. You’re not going to excel, and you’re not going to trounce those thieves and soldiers and unknown assassins. You’re going to stay in the middle, where no one will look your way, because you’re not a threat, because they’ll think that you’ll be eliminated sooner or later, and they should focus their attention on getting rid of bigger, stronger, faster  champions like Cain.

“But you’re going to outlast them,” Chaol continued. “And when they wake up on the morning of the final duel and find that you are their opponent, and that you have beaten them, the look on their faces will make all the insults and lack of attention worthwhile.” He extended his hand to lead her outside. “So what do you have to say about that, Lillian Gordaina?”

“I can look out for myself,” she said lightly, taking his hand. “But I have to say that you’re rather brilliant, Captain. So brilliant, actually, that I might give you one of the jewels I plan to steal from the queen tonight.”

Chaol chuckled, and they strode outside to where the running contest awaited.

And if this isn’t enough for you there’s an awesome trailer check it out!
