A family of mice. A runaway goat.
A mischievous snake.
A shocking parrot.
A pardoned turkey.
A pampered raccoon.
A ghostbusting dog.
A celebrity cow.
The White House housed more than presidents and First Families--who could forget the furry, scaly, feathered friends who impressed the press, guarded their charges, and kept them company through all the ups and downs of their respective terms?

Marilyn Singer's compelling poems will delight readers with stories of the creatures who sat beside our country's leaders, as she draws intriguing connections between the animals and the administrations they accompanied. Mixed-media illustrations by Ryan McAmis lend humor and vivacity, and detailed back matter explores each president's pet history in more depth.

About Marilyn:
Marilyn Singer was born in the Bronx (New York City) on October 3, 1948 and lived most of her early life in N. Massapequa (Long Island), NY. She attended Queens College, City University of New York, and for her junior year, Reading University, England. She holds a B.A. in English from Queens and an M.A. in Communications from New York University.

In 1974, after teaching English in New York City high schools for several years, she began to write - initially film notes, catalogues, teacher's guides and film strips. Then, one day, when she was sitting in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, she penned a story featuring talking insect characters she'd made up when she was eight. Encouraged by the responses she got, she wrote more stories and in 1976 her first book, The Dog Who Insisted He Wasn't, was published by E.P.Dutton & Co.

Since then, Marilyn has published over seventy books for children and young adults. Her genres are many and varied, including realistic novels, fantasies, non-fiction, fairy tales, picture books, mysteries and poetry. She likes writing many different kinds of books because it's challenging and it keeps her from getting bored. She has won several Children's Choice and Parents' Choice Awards, as well as the following: the Creature Carnival, Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award Honor Book, 2005; I Believe in Water: Twelve Brushes with Religion, New York Public Library's "Best Books for the Teen Age," 2001; Stay True: Short Stories for Strong Girls, Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults, 2000 (YALSA); On the Same Day in March, Booklist's Top Ten Science Books of 2000; NCSS-CBC Notable Book, 2000; Deal with a Ghost, finalist, YA category, Edgar Award, 1998; It Can't Hurt Forever, Maud Hart Lovelace Award, 1983; The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth, ALA Best Book for Young Adults, 1983; Turtle in July, NCTE Notable, N.Y.Times Best Illustrated and Time Magazine Best Children's Books of 1989; Turtle in July was also a Reading Rainbow review book.

Marilyn currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband Steve; their standard poodle Oggi, a cousin of their beloved and recently departed poodle Easy, seen in the home page photo; a cat named August ; two collared doves named Jubilee and Holiday; and a starling named Darling. Her interests include dog training, reading, hiking, bird-watching, gardening, meditation, playing computer adventure games and going to the movies and the theatre. She's also a major Star Trek fan.

Title: CITY OF BEASTS
Author: Corrie Wang
Pub. Date: September 17, 2018

"If you see a beast, and you have the shot, don't hesitate. Kill it."

For seventeen years, fees have lived separate from beasts. The division of the sexes has kept their world peaceful. Glori Rhodes is like most other fees her age. She adores her neighborhood's abandoned Costco, can bench her body weight, and she knew twenty-seven beast counter attack moves by the time she was seven. She has never questioned the separation of the sexes or the rules that keep her post-nuclear hometown safe. But when her mother secretly gives birth to a baby beast, Glori grows to love the child and can't help wondering: What really is the difference between us and them?

When her brother, at the age of five, is snatched in a vicious raid, Glori and her best friend, Su, do the unthinkable - covertly infiltrate the City of Beasts to get him back. What's meant to be a smash-and-grab job quickly becomes the adventure of a lifetime as the fees team up with a fast-talking, T-shirt cannon wielding beast named Sway, and Glori starts to see that there's more to males, and her own history, than she's been taught. Glori, Sway, and a motley cohort of friends will go to the ends of the earth to find her little brother. And maybe save their divided world while they're at it.

Now on to the excerpt!

About Corrie:
Corrie Wang is passionate about libraries, recycling, and eating all the food, everywhere. Corrie grew up in Buffalo but spent her formative years in Brooklyn, where one of her last paying gigs was managing a three-story nightclub on the Lower East Side.
Writing to fix things that make her angry and explore things that frighten her, Corrie’s novels are about girls unapologetically conquering scenarios they should have little control over. Tired of seeing women and girls lose in this culture - spoiler - they never do in her stories.

Her debut novel, The Takedown was chosen as one of the best books of 2017 by the New York Public Library and a 2018 YALSA selection for Best Fiction for Young Adults. City of Beasts is her second novel.

Seeing, as Corrie wrote an entire novel about the freakiness and perils of socializing too much on the internets her existence there is haphazard at best. Now, more than ever, she feels it is time for everyone to look up. (Also stand up, step up, and eat up.
Woot!) That being said, you may follow her poor photography skillz on INSTAGRAM.
AND P.S. Wang rhymes with 'song' y'all.

I am stoked to be hosting a stop on the blog tour for STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE: A CRASH OF FATE by Zoraida Córdova! I have an interview with Zoraida to share with you today check it out and enter to win the giveaway below!

About The Book:

Izzy and Jules were best friends until Izzy's family abruptly left Batuu when she was six. But now she's back, and Jules, the boy who never left, is unsure what to make of her. While on the run from vengeful smugglers and an angry pirate, Jules and Izzy will come to terms with who they are, and what they mean to each other.

Now on to the interview!
Hey Zoraida! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! It’s been a while and I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE: A CRASH OF FATE sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE: A CRASH OF FATE and the characters?

Star Wars: A Crash of Fate is the story of two unlikely friends. Izzy is an aspiring

smuggler and Jules is a starry-eyed farm boy. They have 24 hours to deliver a

package or die trying. (And also fall in love along the way.)  It’s set on the world of

Batuu which is the setting of the Galaxy’s Edge theme park. The First Order is on

Black Spire Outpost and the Resistance is somewhere on the planet. Jules and Izzy

navigate the dangers and feelings for each other. It’s about family and finding the

place and people you belong with. The thing about Star Wars is that there’s always

some sort of war happening, so the questions I wanted to ask is: why would these

two people choose each other even when the odds are not on their side?

What are you working on now?

I’m working on Incendiary, a high fantasy about a memory thief working to bring down a corrupt king. The world is loosely inspired by medieval Spain. That comes out April 2020. I also have a YA anthology which I’m co-editing with one of my best friends, Natalie C. Parker. It’s called Vampires Never Get Old and it features 10 stories from authors like Julie Murphy, Victoria Schwab, Dhonielle Clayton and more.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I really love Jules Rakab. He’s just so earnest and sweet. He’s definitely got room for a dark side, but he chooses to have hope and see the best in people. He also loves his home planet of Batuu.

What is your favorite passages/scenes in STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE: A CRASH OF FATE?

I loved writing the prologue because that’s where we get to see the real bond between Iz & Jules. Other than that there’s a cavern/cenote scene that is super romantic. It was inspired by this song Créeme by Maluma & Karol G. Here’s the music video.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I rewatched the movies, which I do multiple times throughout the year anyway. I also read Legends and Canon books to familiarize myself with what other authors have done. Everyone has such great contributions to the galaxy. I also got the big Star Wars visual encyclopedias.

Who is your ultimate book villain?

The Darkling from The Grishaverse. He’s terrible but I’m still fascinated by him.

What inspired you to write STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE: A CRASH OF FATE?

When was brought on for this project I had to give a pitch for the story. I knew it had to be romance and it had to be set on the planet of Batuu. Izzy and Jules took shape right away. Izzy is an aspiring smuggler and Jules is a starry-eyed farmboy. My inspiration was Before Sunrise, where a couple falls in love in a day. Adding Star Wars hijinx and certain doom, plus the backdrop of the First Order and Resistance on the planet definitely have me great material to work with.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

On my TBR is The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen and an ARC of Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez (out January 2020).

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

GRYFFINDOR, BETCHES. *cough* Gryffindor.

Twitter or Facebook?

Instagram

Favorite Superhero?

Spider-man (Tom Holland) and Captain America

Favorite TV show?

Supernatural & Sailor Moon

Sweet or Salty?

Salty

Any Phobias?

Just the usual petrifying fear of dying.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

I’m not up to date with much music so my most listened to song in the last 2 years is Felices los 4 - Maluma feat. Marc Anthony

2019 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Last Christmas! I love Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. Plus, I’m a sucker for Christmas romances.

Thanks so much Z for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE: A CRASH OF FATE!

Thank you & Welcome to Batuu!
