Hey y’all thanks for stopping by to see my Dying to Read post
and of course as always I have to give credit to the lovely Jill over at Breaking the Spine for the
Waiting on Wednesday Meme!
I love alternate histories so I can't wait to get my hands on this!
A sixteen-year-old governess becomes a spy in this alternative U.S. history where the British control with magic and the colonists rebel by inventing. It’s 1888, and sixteen-year-old Verity Newton lands a job in New York as a governess to a wealthy leading family—but she quickly learns that the family has big secrets. Magisters have always ruled the colonies, but now an underground society of mechanics and engineers are developing non-magical sources of power via steam engines that they hope will help them gain freedom from British rule. The family Verity works for is magister—but it seems like the children's young guardian uncle is sympathetic to the rebel cause. As Verity falls for a charming rebel inventor and agrees to become a spy, she also becomes more and more enmeshed in the magister family’s life. She soon realizes she’s uniquely positioned to advance the cause—but to do so, she’ll have to reveal her own dangerous secret.

368 pages
Publisher:
Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR) (Macmillan)
That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen year-old
Adelice Lewys has a secret: she wants to fail.
Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild
is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is
everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being
something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very
fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how
many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t
interested.
Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and wove a moment at testing,
and they’re coming for her—tonight.
Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen
to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her Dad’s stupid jokes. One hour to
pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.
Because once you become a Spinster, there’s no turning back.
Now on to
the interview!
To Janine: When did you know you were going to buy Crewel?
I knew from reading the very first sentence that CREWEL was a
project that I had to have! I read the manuscript one summer afternoon while
pretending to play with my son in the sandbox and pool (good thing my husband
was there to actually take care of the poor child!), and fell in love with it.
How many people read it in-house before you offered? A handful of people in
marketing and sales and FSG's publisher, Simon Boughton. Everyone agreed that it
was the perfect project for FSG's list: it is just the right blend of literary
and commercial, and it's artfully written.
To Genn: When did you know you were going to choose
FSG/Janine?
It was a hard decision, because it felt so important. It
was my debut book, after all! It was really down to two houses, and Janine
understood I wanted this story to be a trilogy. The other editor thought
two might do. Believe me, I couldn't squash this story into two books!
Then we (my agent and I) received an email the day before auction closed
with an amazing plan for the book, and that pretty much clinched it. I
slept on it, woke up the next morning and called my agent to accept the FSG
deal.
What's your editorial process like?
It involves lots and lots of reading and re-reading, and asking
questions, as well as more detailed line edits. It's especially important when
world-building is involved.
What she said! I tend to layer in as I revise, so
rereading is crucial. Plus, I get a little wild with my worldbuilding and
plots, so we have to make sure they make sense.
What are you most excited about in coming books in the Crewel
World trilogy?
Watching Adelice hone her skills and become who she destined to
be.
Writing kissing scenes.
What? It’s true.
Which boy would be your fictional crush in the book?
Hmm. They're all too young for me! But the sixteen-year-old me
would definitely have crushed on Erik because he's a little bit
dangerous.
That’s hard to say, especially since I know who she ends up
with. I plead the fifth.
To Janine: Was it the world or one of the characters that
hooked you?
Both! I love the world Genn has created. It's so rich and
unique, and it feels completely real. Genn has a gift at crafting characters
that come alive on the page, and you find yourself emotionally invested in
their lives. Plus, she is a master at giving the reader villains that you will
love to hate.
Who is your favorite character and why?
Adelice, of course! She's tough and determined and I like that
in a girl. Beyond that, I totally enjoyed when Maela showed up in scenes. She
is pure evil in a good way.
I won’t lie. I love
Cormac. I can’t even say I love to hate
him. He just flows onto the page.
Will you work together on future books? (lol, I'll have to
get through writing the rest of this series before we can answer that!)
YES! Genn is an editor's dream author. She's fun and smart, and
she views the process as a collaboration, which it should be.
I have to finish this series first! But I love Janine and FSG, and I think
there’s a lot of value to building a relationship with a publishing houses
rather than jumping around too much.
Incapable. Awkward. Artless.

There was a lot of hype around the twitterverse on this book
so I figured I’d read it and hoped I’d love it like everyone else did. Well I
can’t say I’m as obsessed as the rest of twitter I did really like the story.
Gennifer has literally woven a beautiful world (even if I did hate everything
it stood for). I’ve actually put writing this review off for a few days so I
could gather my thought about Crewel.
So now here I am trying to figure out what to say still. Like I said I really
liked this one I just can’t come up with much to say.
I loved the characters and like I said her world building was
amazing. I think I just lost focus when she started talking about the weaving
aspect of the story especially in the beginning. I don’t know maybe that was
overdone a bit, in my opinion because during those scenes I tended to lose
focus to fade in and out. I am really looking forward to then next book though
because it’s set in a different place and there was a good twist at the end
that I’m really excited to see where it leads us, and I really enjoyed Gennifer’s
writing. And I did fall in love with one of the male characters it wasn’t gut
wrenching OMG I have to have him love but Jost was pretty darned smexy.
So I chose a scene between Jost and Adelice. Enjoy!
Jost is waiting for me in
the hall and the young stewardess flashes me a grin as she disappears around
the corner. “Nice to see some enthusiasm,” he says dryly. ‘Erik is checking to
make sure everything is in order.”
“Great.”
I can’t think of anything
to say to him, so I press my lips together apologetically. I hate having to
pretend he’s beneath me, but I don’t want anyone questioning our familiarity
with each other.
“I know,” he whispers.
“I’m sorry.” The
understanding look he’s giving me makes me feel worse.
“Hey, I told you to play
dumb.”
I nod and vertigo from the
rebound sends me reeling forward. Jost catches me easily, and my arms tingle
where he touches my bare skin. The sensation travels up my arms and settles in
the nape of my neck. I know I should pull away, but before I can, the click of
shoes in the hall behind us startles us apart. Jost casually steps back as Erik
comes into view.
Make sure you pre-order it and add it to your goodreads lists!

From Goodreads.
Mia Price is a lightning addict. She's survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.
Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.
Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn't who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.
Ok here’s the thing there’s lots of religion in this book and being a
not religious person I thought it would bug me; I have actually seen a few
reviews where they complained that it was too much. That being said it did
bother me a little in the beginning; I found
myself squirming at the mention of God and Prophet but, once I got into the
story and stopped thinking about all of that I really enjoyed this book!
Basically this all boils down to a good versus evil situation with the
lines blurred with who is really the good guy and, poor Mia is stuck in the
middle. There’s also a boy who is a huge beautiful mystery and two different
leaders of groups that are very appealing and enigmatic in their own rights. I
loved Mia’s character she’s extremely flawed (being a lightening addict and
all) but through her flaws we see a strength, a willingness to fight and
survive that I found very believable and she had me rooting for her to make the
right choices. The mysterious boy Jeremy I fell for almost instantly with his
dark hair, Clark Kent glasses and, the pain and sadness behind his eyes; he was
a puzzle one I figured out quite early but, I still loved putting the pieces
together. There were other characters that I really liked too Katrina even
though she was kind of a bitch and Mr. Kale who I developed a huge crush on.
And ugh I hated Prophet he was seriously creepy with those milky eyes and
slivery hair he seriously gave me the willies!
So that being said I just spoke with Jenn and she said that this book
is a standalone and while I like that… I’m having a problem letting go of this
world and I really would like to see more of Mia and Jeremy not to mention Mr.
Kale ;) So please Macmillan, pretty please ask Jenn to write more books!!!!!
I chose a passage between Jeremy and Mia because it made me giggle
just a bit and there’s a motorcycle in it.
Past Jeremy’s
shoulder, I could see his bike parked at the end of the alley. I stepped past
him and crossed the dozen yards to it.
I stood there
surveying the machine, and even though I knew nothing about motorcycles, I
couldn’t help but be impressed. And terrified. The bike was black and shiny and
compact. It looked barely big enough for one person to ride on, let alone the
two of us. But Jeremy lifted the seat and removed an extra helmet from the
compartment beneath. He handed it to me. I took it, but only stared at it
dumbly.
“Are you okay
with this?”
“I guess I have
to be, don’t I?” I raised my eyes to his, chewing my lip. “What if---“ I
hesitated, uncertain how to proceed with the question. “What if the thing that
happens, you know, when we’re touching… what if it happens while we’re on the
bike? I could fall off the back.”
“You won’t,”
Jeremy said.
“How can you be
so sure?”
“I have to touch
you with my hands for it to happen.” He raised his hands, palms up, as though
in surrender. “As long as these stay on the handlebars, you’re safe.”
“So I can touch
you, but you can’t touch me?”
He nodded,
frowning. “For now,” he said, and the implication made my hot blood boil all
over again.
I also wanted to post the trailer for struck in case y’all haven’t
seen it because it’s pretty darned fantastic!
