This is a scene from the point of view of Mr. Tadeckis, the quirky
outdoors teacher at St. Benedict’s School, who is, (to borrow a phrase from The Breakfast Club) “the eyes and ears
of this institution.”
Mr. Tadeckis was frustrated. He had made
several attempts to mentor Luke Chase only to be rebuffed. It was a shame that
someone with raw talent and genuine potential could succumb to peer pressure and
dismiss him. He didn’t understand how this boy could deny a chance to hone his
natural abilities and channel them into successful leadership. Not to mention
the bonus survival skills that Mr. Tadeckis could teach him. Sure, he knew Luke had escaped kidnappers, traversed
the wilderness while being hunted by criminals, and ultimately evaded detection
for three days, but that was amateur hour. Mr. Tadeckis could do that in his
sleep. In fact, Mr. Tadeckis had already mastered the outdoors, outwitted his
opponents and gathered intelligence on everyone around him. And, unlike Luke, no
one would ever have been able to capture him.
What was it about him that people
dismissed, Mr. Tadeckis wondered? He knew he was perceived as awkward and
‘uncool’ but when it came to life and death situations did you really care if
your hero was awkward or uncool? Knowledge, stealth and endurance were the most
valuable attributes and Mr. Tadeckis had them in abundance. The students that
passed through his outdoors program left stronger and more capable. He knew
that some of his former pupils who had graduated were later been recruited into
the CIA and other more discreet government agencies. Those young men and women
had possessed focus and acceptance. Knowing that you have certain capabilities
and acknowledging them is of the utmost importance.
Yet Luke Chase, the golden boy that everyone
loved and revered, refused to acknowledge his talents. Why then did people call
him the hero? And why was Mr. Tadeckis the freak?
He remembered feeling excited (well,
marginally) when he had learned Luke Chase, ‘The Kidnapped Kid’, would be
attending St. Benedict’s. He had approached him in his dorm on the first day of
school and asked him to join the outdoors club. He had assumed it was a
no-brainer. Luke had half-heartedly consented but then didn’t show up at the
initial meeting, despite Mr. Tadeckis’ email reminders. Furious, he had tracked
Luke down in the main hall talking with an air-headed girl and pulled him
aside. Folding his arms, Mr. Tadeckis had demanded to know why he had been
absent.
“Sorry,” said Luke said, not meeting his
gaze. “I’m not going to do the outdoors club.”
Mr. Tadeckis had bristled. “Do you assume
that you already know everything there is to know about outdoor survival?”
“It’s not that, I just…I want to focus on
other stuff.”
Mr. Tadeckis pressed him, but Luke would
not capitulate. Not yet, anyway. So this is how he wants to play it, thought
Mr. Tadeckis: hard to get. No doubt flush with vanity because he had become
famous on what was essentially a camping trip in Mr. Tadeckis’ mind. Well, that
would have to change. Mr. Tadeckis would have to impress upon Luke that he was
no outdoors expert. And Luke would have to learn the hard way.
