The Secret Behind the
Narrative Structure of Truly Darkly Deeply

Truly Darkly Deeply is a dual timeline
narrative:
The present in which my protagonist,
Sophie receives a letter from her ‘father’- convicted serial killer- Matty
Melgren saying he is dying and wants to meet. For twenty years, questions have
remained as to his guilt. Now it looks like Sophie might finally get the
answers she craves. But will the truth set her free -- or bury her deeper?
And the past (the 1980s) in which we see
Sophie as a child and a serial killer targeting women who look just like her
mother who is in a relationship with the handsome and charismatic, Matty
Melgren.
Setting part of the novel in the ‘80s
gave me the opportunity to skip down
Memory Lane reliving TV dinners in front of Dynasty, dancing to Madonna (which
I still do when no-one’s watching- don’t tell!) and wearing Ra-Ra skirts.
Like my protagonist, I also made a Royal Wedding scrapbook to celebrate
the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana and remember vividly coming home
from school to be told Britain was at war with Argentina.
But as well as providing some colour (and a chance to be a little
nostalgic!) the 1980s backdrop serves a dramatic purpose too by offering a
metaphor for what is happening in the book at the time.
The Royal Wedding, for example, juxtaposes with the lie behind the
fairy-tale of Matty and Sophie’s mother’s relationship. Whilst the law
requiring seatbelts to be worn in the front seat, reflects the dangers lying in
the road ahead.
And
like all roads, there are two sides (as well as two timelines) to Truly, Darkly,
Deeply:
A coming-of-age narrative and a serial killer thriller. A
tale of the triumph of hope over despair; of losing everything only to find
what you really need is inside you all along.
