An iconic rock star with everything to prove. A teen runaway with nothing left to lose. Are you ready for the most unexpected journey?

Adrian ‘Jazzer’ Johnson’s gilded rock and roll career is the stuff of legend. From out of the dive bars of Long Beach, this high school dropout rocketed his band to the pinnacle of success. But after a whirlwind decade ended with him broken and questioning, Adrian disappeared.

Now back on tour after a year in exile, Adrian’s still struggling and under pressure to deliver his next hit. The last thing he needs is to find a teen runaway hiding in his tour bus. As it turns out, Hastings Sinclair is a synesthete who can see music in color. But her offer to help color-blind Adrian unpack his creative block upends their lives in ways they never imagined.

Because Adrian’s troubles run deep—beyond what any song can fix—and Hastings hasn’t been upfront about hers. When calamity strikes, a perfect storm of fates unleashes and caught in the crossfire are Adrian’s band mates, a fame-shy beauty he falls hard for, and a scheming journalist with a vendetta. With everything he values suddenly on the line, can Adrian reconcile his own brash history? Or will he be forced to face the music in a way he never has before?

Interview:

Hey Andréa!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! A RAINBOW LIKE YOU sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the A RAINBOW LIKE YOU and the characters?

At its heart, the story is a redemptive tale; a rites of passage journey for the main character, Adrian ‘Jazzer’ Johnson. At the start of a new world tour, Adrian is 30, personally and professionally at a crossroads, and under pressure to deliver his next hit. Hastings Sinclair, the teen runaway Adrian finds hiding in his tour bus, becomes the unexpected tipping point. She’s a synesthete who can see music in color. But her offer to help color-blind Adrian unpack his creative block, upends their lives in ways they never imagined.

Adrian is a mercurial, gifted and very private musician, constantly at odds with the demands his success has created. This friction makes for an interesting character.

Hastings is a wonderful foil to Adrian—an observant, frank, yet struggling soul who can sense the same in Adrian. Their scenes together are some of my favorites. The story themes play out primarily between those two.

What are you working on now?

My third novel! Very excited for this one. The heroine is unlike any character I’ve written, and the plot takes some surprising twists. It’s also the first story I’ve written set in my hometown of Vancouver.  I love interweaving some of my favorite places into the story.

I’m also launching a new romance series next year under a nom de plume!

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

No. I try to avoid that. I like starting with an original slate. The world of rock and roll has its share of tropes, and I wanted to create characters that didn’t fall into those tried and true stereotypes.  Adrian, in particular. We’ve all seen, or read about, the out of control, groupie-addicted musician. I wanted to counter expectations on every level.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I love writing antagonists, so Norm, the bass player, was really fun. He’s like the obnoxious uncle who gets drunk at parties and everyone cringes but can’t look away. He’s a beautiful train wreck.

I don’t have a least favorite, but after Adrian, Hastings evolved the most from the first draft. Because there is an air of mystery to her, how her story gets revealed was crucial to the tempo of the book. I cut out, added and moved around a lot of her story pieces until the flow felt right.

What is your favorite passages/scenes in A RAINBOW LIKE YOU?

Near the end of the story is a scene between Adrian and his long-term manager, Mac. Mac knows Adrian on a very intimate, fatherly level, and I loved what this scene revealed for both of them. Men have feelings too but express them in different ways. It’s a poignant, touching scene and I learned a lot about both characters while writing it.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I know a lot of people in the music industry, so I had some great access. One element of the story (which I can’t reveal cos it’s a spoiler) required some very specific information and I was lucky to tap into a great resource. Since I’ve spent many hours of my life in and around concerts and venues, writing about those elements came naturally to me. My biggest tip to writers?  When you get the chance to talk to someone in person during your research phase, keep them talking! People will tell you so much more in a face to face conversation then if you email them a bunch of questions.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend/girlfriend?

Well, I do kinda have a crush on Adrian. He’s quirky and complicated and passionate and I love my men with long, dark hair. He’d be a great dinner party guest…if he would ever leave the house!

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Henry Miller – Tropic of Cancer. Zadie Smith – Swing Time. Elevator Pitch – Linwood Barclay.

Instagram, Twitter or Facebook?

They all serve different purposes, but I do like Twitter for its engagement. It’s the platform where people interact the most. Lots of music fans to debate with!

Favorite Superhero?

Roger Federer

Favorite TV show?

No faves but I recently enjoyed Stephen King’s “The Outsider.” I recently adapted my first novel COMPLETION into a limited TV series and it’s making the rounds. Coming soon…

Sweet or Salty?

Depends on the day.

Any Phobias?

Spiders. Being buried alive.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Shipwreck – Klangkarussell, Austrian EDM duo.

2020 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Ha ha ha…this is a joke right?

Actually, I recently watched (on Netflix) “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” an adaptation of author Iain Reid’s first novel. The screenplay was written by Charlie Kaufman who wrote one of my favorite movies, Being John Malkovich. The film is dreamy and David Lynch-ian with superb performances from every actor. It requires focus to watch given the large chunks of dialogue, but I like how it messes with you.  As a viewer, I was kept on my toes.

Thanks so much Andréa for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read A RAINBOW LIKE YOU!
