Excerpt 2

The Last Teetan

The people of the Citadel slowly opened their doors, and some strolled along while headed toward their businesses. Kaven ignored the commotion and kept walking until he reached the market district. Then, a shop caught his attention. They left the door open. At least someone is fond of working hard he thought to himself before he entered.

"Hello there," he said as the smell of rust came rushing to him. He covered his nose.

"Apologies, lad, the iron rusts when it is abandoned," said a young man that came to greet him.

"Are you not a blacksmith?" Kaven asked. As a gust of wind unraveled his cloak briefly, Kaven quickly covered himself. "Then why leave them unattended? It hasn't even rained in the Citadel for very long."

"It's not the rain that rusts our iron," the man locked his gaze with Kaven for a moment and took a deep breath.

"Then what does?"

The man sighed. "Would you like to drink something?"

Kaven shook his head. "I wouldn't want to intrude."

"I'm sorry, it's my brother's shop. I came from Wynne when I heard what happened to him."

"From Wynne?" Kaven raised a brow.

The man smiled and extended a hand. "I made it just in time; the name is Robert."

"K... Miles," Kaven said as he shook his hand.

"There are far more terrible things than rain in this world, Miles," Robert sighed. "Have you ever been to Wynne?"

"Can't say I have," Kaven replied. "Anything interesting there?"

"Ah," Robert took a deep breath. "I was quite up the chain back then. I've since turned my life around, though I've seen enough adventures for a lifetime."

"What happened?"

"When I heard what happened to my brother, it was almost too important to be a coincidence. I just felt a connection. I was head of a... certain temple in Wynne."

Kaven squinted his eyes. He tried to make his face but couldn't. "Whatever happened there was connected to your brother's state?"

"I saw Veda. Or rather, he talked through a girl no older than sixteen," Robert said as his brows widened. "What I saw was not a savior. And that is why they shunned me. My people," he added before he broke his gaze and lowered his head. "I was ashamed."

"A Teetan? You're a damn Teetan?" Kaven snapped.

"Not anymore," Robert shook his head. "There is an old prophecy, dated thousands of years ago - about a wandering knight in the lands of Dragonhead."

Kaven laughed. "You said you're not a Teetan, yet you still believe in fantasy tales?"

"Have you not seen what is happening? The Titanlord is walking amongst us, yet you still choose to ridicule us. But tell me, do you know anyone who can read the ancient tongue better?"

"What does the ancient prophecy, by the wandering knight in Dragonhead say?"

"The royal records mention a great war right before the first Magmar became king, the shattering of Myrn, and an ancient curse that befell the Titans thousands of years ago."

"An ancient curse?"

"Yes!" Robert nodded his head. "The royal archives are filled with stories about Titans turning when bearing more than they can handle. However, I believe there is more truth to this, hiding in the depths of Dragonhead."

Kaven felt his heartbeat in his throat. His pulse rose, but he calmed himself down. "Let's see, Magmars became kings, but Myrn did not shatter. So, mankind will not end?"

Robert shook his head again. "You still refuse to believe. Myrn did shatter! The Magmars changed the name of the Old Capital to Myrn when the original one split into three islands," he said as he straightened three fingers. "Hollow Land and the Twin Islands were once joined together," he said, lowering two fingers.

"Robert... you must not speak of this to anyone. If you want your Teetan curse to end, I suggest you forget this happened. Tend to your brother, who appears to have been a good man."

"Would you like to see him?" Robert asked.

"What good would that bring?"

"Come," Robert waved Kaven in, pushing the curtains to reveal a bed. Then, on it, laid a man so thin that his bones pressed at his skin. His mouth was wide open, and his veins shone on his body.

"What the hell happened to him?"

"The Titanlord happened, Miles," Robert said, they say he is evil, but when last he was here, he transcended both gods and titans. He spoke words to my brother, and he has never risen. They call it a compulsion. It didn't start this way, but right around the time when an army of Dwellers attacked the Citadel, I received a letter from my brother saying that he parted with our family heritage."

Kaven's brows narrowed again.

"He would rather die than give the sword that our ancestors used in the times of Robrin the Red."

"You complicate matters."

Robert cocked his hand into his pocket and took out a scroll. "Here, read it yourself."

Kaven sighed and took the scroll from his hand, and read it.

Dearest brother,

You are the only family I possess in this world. I must inform you that I have passed down our heritage and pride, the shining sword, to a little girl. I do not know what possessed me to agree, but I cannot live with myself.

There is darkness in me, brother, I feel it eating away at my soul, and I know not what to do. We haven't seen eye to eye, you and I, but I heard that your company might know a thing or two about such curses.

Aid me, brother... for I am not long for this world.

Kaven twisted the paper. "Why are you telling me this?"

Robert sighed yet again. "I want you to know just who it is you serve."

A chill ran down Kaven's spine. "Who are you? Really?"

"When the wind blew away your cloak for a moment, I saw the same sword another carried. One who served the Red Hand. It is no secret that you lot are what makes the Titanlord's army. I had imagined you or someone would come to save your captain soon enough."

"All this to educate me on history? Or had you hoped I would shove my sword in my commander instead?"

Robert grabbed Kaven's shoulder. "You must know who you serve! The signs never lie! This, I swear to you. If the rumors are true and the Titanlord uses two Titan Powers, he will turn. That is fact. That is the Taint!"

"The Taint?"

"The same curse that turned the zealots into Dwellers in the first era. The Titanlord will be lord of nothing but demons soon enough... That is how the Dweller Lord came to be."

A commotion.

"What's going on?"

"The Hanging has begun..."

How far would you go to fulfill your terrifying ancient vow?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo meets Outlander in this "hauntingly beautiful debut" (Julie McElwain, A Murder in Time). Take a plunge into this mind-blowing, genre-bending world of historical fantasy, suspense, romance, and time travel.

If not for "The Ghost"—her FBI husband's gruesome case—Siena Forte's life would have been perfect. But not when the D.C. serial killer is hunting women like her, and when her husband is so unsettled by this case, he refuses to discuss it. It's a miracle her art career is thriving at all. And not only her career.

When Siena lands a medieval mural commission at the National Gallery of Art, she discovers a bizarre knack for astral projecting to her past life. In a lucky strike, her visions of love and prominence in medieval Ireland are just the creative inspiration she seeks.

What Siena doesn't know is her vivid depiction of the past exposes her to someone she has met before—the serial killer, reborn in this century just like her. But when a vicious attack from the past reverberates into the present, Siena's life unravels in a chilling parallel.

Silenced and alone, she discovers the true reason for her visions. They're not the creative inspiration they seemed, but a harbinger of her centuries-old revenge vow, and the killer cannot be stopped until she fulfills it. But there is another person from the past with unfinished business—her husband. And another unwelcome déjà vu—their crumbling marriage, once again precipitated by the serial killer's crime.

“Ah, here you are,” he said without preamble, voice low and brooding. “Come.” He was pulsing with dangerous energy—something between anger, disgust, and poorly  curbed violence.

I drew back.

He reached for my hand, resolute. “Come now, my Neave.”

Not wishing to make a scene, I stood and followed him out. I didn’t take his hand. “What’s amiss?” I said, struggling to keep pace with his long strides.

“Don’t fret.” He entered the corridor to the undercroft. “All will be set to rights soon.”  “Why d’you take me to the cellars?” I stalled. “I’ve no wish to go there!”

He halted, impatient. “I don’t mean to worry you, a mhuirnín.” He attempted to soften  his voice but failed. “You’re about to receive my present. One that’s overdue.”  “What present? Wine?”

So help me, Brigid, I couldn’t think of it. I could not.

“You’ll know soon.” He took my hand at the top of the stairs, his own rigid and heavy.  “Have faith.”

We walked for some time, passing through the dim stone passageways, cold storage  rooms, and cellars, the air dank and sodden with earth, spirits, and oak.

I clenched my hands into fists to stop them from shaking. He’s here.

Without warning, we came upon a vaulted hall at the end of the undercroft. Only it wasn’t  a hall. It was a dungeon, lit with oil lamps and filled with manacles, chains, and implements of  sinister purpose. Kian, Fillan, and others were gathered in the corner, engaged in something I  couldn’t make out. Breath quickening, I darted a look at Aedan, but he only stood beside me,  squeezing my hand in his.

Then, the men moved away and revealed someone kneeling on the dirt floor. He was  covered in wounds and muck from head to toe and unclothed, save for wide iron cuffs on his  wrists and ankles, fettering him to the wall. A large man, almost Aedan’s size, he stared at the  floor, affecting unconcern.

The oil lamps gave off scant light. But even in the dim, I could see his hair clipped short at  the ears and his mustache drooping down to his chin. I grasped my neck as if something squeezed  round it, suffocating me.

“He’s yours to do with as you would, my Neave.” Aedan took a long, sharp blade from his  belt and pressed it into my hand.

“Who is he?” I faltered, my trembling hand slick with sweat.

Aedan shot me a glance, a groove forming between his brows. “Take a better look, a rún.  He’ll not harm you now.”

Blog Tour- TALK OF THE TOWN by @JennBardsley With An Excerpt & #Giveaway! @AmazonPub

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the TALK OF THE TOWN by Jennifer Bardsley Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: TALK OF THE TOWN

Author: Jennifer Bardsley

Pub. Date: April 11, 2023

Publisher: Montlake

Formats: Paperback, eBook, Audiobook

Pages: 379

In this lighthearted romance filled with small-town humor and high jinks, an unsuspecting real estate agent becomes the wildest dream come true for all the single moms—except the one he wants.

They’re coworkers, friends, and confidants, but Peter Marshal has always pined for a little something more with Noelle Walters. As a widow and a single mom, Noelle prefers to play it safe, and falling for Peter was never part of the plan.

Then again, neither of their plans accounted for the well-meaning but meddling actions of Peter’s sister, who offers him up as their town’s most eligible bachelor in the local moms’ Facebook group. He’s none the wiser about the source of this sudden surge in attention, but he only has eyes for Noelle. And from where she’s standing on the sidelines of Peter’s popularity, it’s getting harder to pretend that she doesn’t see what everyone else sees in her best friend.

With all eyes on them, will Peter and Noelle finally see beyond the hurdles to the happily ever after that’s been there all along?

Excerpt:

Peter grinned again, and the dimple in his right cheek peeked out. It was the same expression he wore on the bus stop advertisement in front of the library, the picture that made him look like Tom Cruise.

Not that Noelle thought Peter looked like Tom Cruise. In fact, she actively focused on not thinking he looked like a movie star. He didn’t smile in a way that turned her knees into jelly. She never wondered what it would be like to hop in his Mercedes and cruise along Chuckanut Drive. The very idea would be disloyal to Jeff’s memory, the only man she had ever kissed.

Noelle deleted her faux typing and tried not to wonder what Peter was making her. He returned a few minutes later and presented her with a machine-made cappuccino.

“A quarter cup of whole milk steamed, with extra foam.” Peter set it on her desk. It was the exact way she’d prepared her coffee before Daniel’s diagnosis from the nutritionist.

“Thanks.” Feeling a bit guilty, Noelle reached for the mug.
