Sometimes beauty is the beast…

"We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed."

Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

Exclusive Excerpt!

When Rain turned back to Freddie, he bit down a gasp of surprise. She’d stripped off her shirt and tipped her face to the moon, eyes closed, like one would do to the sun at the beach. And here he’d thought the landscape was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

The air was still. Eerily still, and her smooth skin appeared to glow from inside in the moonlight—her black lace bra sheer enough to make him a little dizzy.

Without opening her eyes, she said, “Take off your shirt.”

No way in hell was he going to argue with that. He yanked off his shirt, clutching it in his fist, waiting for his next instruction.

He forgot how to breathe when she opened her pale eyes and moved toward him. Her gaze wasn’t focused on his face, though. It was on his chest. Stopping in front of him, she traced her fingers over the ink.

“Raindrops?” she asked, finger outlining one of the shapes.

“Tears,” he replied, again light-headed as she ran her fingertips over his pec.

“For your mom?”

“No. For all of us.”

She stepped back and, for a long time, stared at the tattoo comprised of dozens of drops in a random pattern over his chest, spilling down his ribs.

She traced a scar on his side with the tip of her finger. One of many marring his body from fights. “Your life has been sad.”

And so had hers recently. Maybe that was why he felt so connected to her. Their shared grief, their shared stand against a harsh, unfeeling, screwed-up world. Their shared solitude.

She turned back to the moon and raised her arms. “Do you feel it?”

Well, that was a wide-open question. He was feeling lots of things.

“The moon,” she said. “It’s like aloe when you’re sunburned. Try it.”

He imitated her posture, head back, arms out, but felt nothing other than the throbbing hardness he always felt around her.

“So, what do you think about that legend your aunt told you?” she asked.

He opened his eyes to find her studying him. “That the rock can turn men into beasts?” His mind raced, wondering what would prompt that question and what answer she was looking for. Men were beasts. Horrible monsters at times. He’d seen it firsthand. “I believe we all hide a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.”

There it was again. That strange warm pull in his chest while she studied him. Like she totally got him—something no one else had ever bothered to do. He’d never been understood or accepted. People saw his size and found out his background and immediately wrote him off as dangerous or not worth the trouble. Not Freddie.

She obviously found his answer acceptable, because she wound her fingers in his hair and hauled him against her for another kiss. Raw, open-mouthed, and hungry. He’d never met anyone like this, who made him burn so hot he thought he might die from need. Recovering from surprise, he placed his hands on either side of her bare rib cage, feeling her body expand and contract with each quick breath. Bones and hard muscle working beneath smooth, soft skin. Skin he wanted to touch all over.

“I like you, Rain Ryland,” she said, dragging her nails down his back.

“Like” didn’t even come close. He was on fire for her. Had thought of her night and day since he first saw those eerily pale eyes and badass attitude. She was smart, strong, and terribly, terribly dangerous, which turned him on like crazy. “I like you, too.”

“How much?”

Something was going on here. Something other than foreplay. “More than I’ve ever liked anyone.” Which was true and unexpected. This was more than physical, which was a terrifying thought for him. Maybe this time he could stay. Maybe this time he’d actually found a home and wouldn’t have to leave everything behind.

He kissed her again, not wanting to think about legends, or leaving, or anything else for that matter. He wanted to just live in this moment as long as it lasted. Running his hands lower, his thumb brushed the unmistakable shape of a condom in her back pocket. He froze, and she smiled against his lips.

“You scared, Sprinkles?”

“Yes.”

“Of me?” It was like she wanted him to fear her.

“No.” He pulled back, amazed at how her eyes reflected the moon like clear glass. “Of this.” He gestured to the space he’d put between them. “Of whatever this is.” The intensity of it. The urgency. And worse, much worse—the potential loss of it. He’d never feared losing something before because he’d never had anything worth keeping. This girl, though. She was different. And he wanted her.

About Mary:

Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. She lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband.

Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 "pet" Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the "pet" roaches found a home... somewhere else.

Hey everyone! I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for ODD & TRUE by Cat Winters! I adore Cat and her books!!!

I have an interview with Cat to share with you today! And make sure to enter the giveaway below!

Haven't heard of ODD & TRUE? Check it out!

Trudchen grew up hearing Odette’s stories of their monster-slaying mother and a magician’s curse. But now that Tru’s older, she’s starting to wonder if her older sister’s tales were just comforting lies, especially because there’s nothing fantastic about her own life—permanently disabled and in constant pain from childhood polio.

In 1909, after a two-year absence, Od reappears with a suitcase supposedly full of weapons and a promise to rescue Tru from the monsters on their way to attack her. But it’s Od who seems haunted by something. And when the sisters’ search for their mother leads them to a face-off with the Leeds Devil, a nightmarish beast that’s wreaking havoc in the Mid-Atlantic states, Tru discovers the peculiar possibility that she and her sister—despite their dark pasts and ordinary appearances—might, indeed, have magic after all.
Now on to the interview!

Hey Cat!! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! ODD & TRUE was awesome and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

Thanks so much for hosting me, Jaime!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about ODD & TRUE and the characters?

ODD & TRUE is the story of two sisters, Odette and Trudchen Grey, known as Od and Tru. Older sister Od has always told younger sister Tru fairytales and legends to hide the pain of their family’s history and to bolster Tru’s spirits after a debilitating battle with polio. Now that Tru is older, she no longer believes in magic and wants to learn the truth about their past. Od reemerges after a mysterious two-year absence and claims they’re destined to embark on a hunt for monsters across America. Tru finds herself doing whatever it takes to uncover Od’s secrets, even if it means following her sister on her strange and fantastical quest to slay a mythical beast.

The novel was inspired by a real-life monster hunt in 1909 America.

So what’s up next for you? What are you working on?

I’m hard at work on a new YA novel, but I can’t yet say what it’s about. I’ll drop a little hint, though: this one involves the teenage years of a real-life historical figure.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

The bond that Od and Tru share was inspired by my relationship with my own sister. Their childhood was far more tragic than what my sister and I experienced, but some of our traits definitely made their way into these fictional girls.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I loved writing from the alternating viewpoints of my two leads, who are near and dear to my heart, but Uncle Magnus also became a favorite. His character evolved into something far more complex than what I originally envisioned for him.

My least favorite? Hmm, that’s a hard one to say, because I enjoyed writing them all. I suppose Aunt Viktoria was probably the most difficult to write because I wanted to make sure she wasn’t a carbon copy of Aunt Eva from In the Shadow of Blackbirds.

(A special bonus for those of you following this blog tour: I realized Od and Tru’s mother and her siblings grew up during the same time and in the same region as Mary Shelley Black’s mother in In the Shadow of Blackbirds. Look for a mention of Mary Shelley’s mom, Amelia, in Chapter Two.)

What is your favorite passage/scene in ODD & TRUE?

Od’s first POV chapter, when we see the day of Tru’s birth and the way Od views the world.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

This book involved nonstop research. I started with 1909 newspaper articles that detailed the sightings of a creature called the Leeds Devil (more popularly known today as the Jersey Devil), and I amassed a collection of books with topics ranging from American monster legends to domestic service in the early 1900s. Newspaper articles about numerous other topics from the era, as well as historical medical journal articles, also helped immensely. My sister happens to know a woman who’s descended from the Leeds family behind the Jersey Devil legend, so I got a chance to speak with her, and a school located in the heart of Jersey Devil country invited me to speak when I was in the middle of writing the novel, which proved to be extremely helpful.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Severus Snape, the ultimate romantic, loyal Goth boy.

What inspired you to write YA?

Originally, I tried to break into publishing by writing adult fiction, but I could never manage to sell a book to a publisher, although I managed to sign with my agent. When I told her my ideas for In the Shadow of Blackbirds, she said it sounded like a YA novel and encouraged me to go in that direction. It happened to be my very first book to sell, so I’m thankful I followed her advice!

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I’m reading a few books I can’t name because they’re part of my research for the secret project, but when I have a moment to steal, I’m reading AUMA’S LONG RUN, an excellent new MG novel by debut author Eucabeth Odhiambo. Please put it on your radar if you haven’t already.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Ravenclaw

Twitter or Facebook?

I tend to hang out more on Twitter.

Favorite Superhero?

Wonder Woman

Favorite TV show?

Currently, People of Earth

Sweet or Salty?

Sweet

Any Phobias?

Ophidiophobia (the fear of snakes!)

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

I’m still loving Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still,” even though it’s played all the time.

2017 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

The movie adaptation of Brian Selznick’s WONDERSTRUCK

Thanks so much Cat for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read ODD & TRUE!

Once Upon a Time…

In the kingdom of Tranen, a king makes a promise to his dying wife that he'll only remarry a woman who possesses her golden hair. In time, the king's eyes are turned by his daughter. Realizing her father’s intentions, Princess Aurelia tries to trick him by requesting impossible gifts: dresses created by the sun, moon and stars, and a coat made of a thousand furs. But when he is successful, Aurelia sacrifices her privileged life and flees her kingdom, disguised by the cloak and a new name, Allerleirauh.

She enters the safe haven of Saarland der Licht, where the handsome and gentle Prince Klaus takes her under his care. Hoping not to be discovered by her father’s courtiers, Allerleirauh tries to remain hidden under her new identity when she finds unexpected love with Prince Klaus, even though his arranged marriage to the princess of a neighboring kingdom approaches. Risking everything, Allerleirauh must face her troubled past and her fears of the future along her journey to self-acceptance in this triumphant retelling of the classic Grimm Fairy Tale.

Excerpt:
“I won’t ever let them near you again, Aurelia. I swear it,” he promised as his grief-filled eyes met mine. “You must know I love you. It never mattered to me whether you were a princess or not. It matters not to me if you think you are soiled, because to me . . . you are more . . . You are more than what has happened to you, and you always shall be,” he said softly as his hand slid to my cheek. Carefully, his thumb wiped a tear away. “You are this wonderful, head-strong, and brave woman,” Klaus continued. “No one has any right to ever try to take such a thing away from you. It should only ever be admired and cherished.”

More tears began to spill over my cheeks as relief flooded me. Klaus would not turn me away; instead, he accepted me. I rested my forehead against his shoulder, as I felt his arms slowly wrap around me.

“Tell me what you wish for me to do, my sweet Aurelia, and I will do it.”
