Wannabe actress Dani Steele’s résumé resembles a cautionary tale on how not to be famous. She’s pushing thirty and stuck in a dead-end insurance job, and her relationship status is holding at uncommitted. With unbearably perfect sisters and a mother who won’t let her forget it, Dani has two go-tos for consolation: maple scones and a blog in which she pours her heart out to her celebrity idol. He’s the man her father never was, no boyfriend will ever be—and not so impossible a dream as one might think. When Dani learns that he’s planning a fund-raising event where the winning amateur athlete gets a walk-on in his new film, she decides to trade pastries and self-doubt for running shoes and a sexy British trainer with adorable knees.

But when Dani’s plot takes an unexpected twist, she realizes that her happy ending might have to be improvised—and that proving herself to her idol isn’t half as important as proving something to herself.

Haven't heard of WASTE OF SPACE? Check it out!

Title: WASTE OF SPACE
Author: Gina Damico
Pub. Date: July 11, 2017
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for Young Readers
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook
Pages: 400
Find it: AmazonAudibleB&NiBooksTBDGoodreads
Cram ten hormonal teens into a spaceship and blast off: that’s the premise for the ill-conceived reality show Waste of Space. The kids who are cast know everything about drama—and nothing about the fact that the production is fake. Hidden in a desert warehouse, their spaceship replica is equipped with state-of-the-art special effects dreamed up by the scientists partnering with the shady cable network airing the show. And it’s a hit! Millions of viewers are transfixed. But then, suddenly, all communication is severed. Trapped and paranoid, the kids must figure out what to do when this reality show loses its grip on reality.

Now on to the excerpt!

In this excerpt, Chazz Young, head of the DV8 television network, promotes his new reality competition on the late night talk show, The Perky Paisley Show.

Item: Transcript of video recording
Source: The Perky Paisley Show
Date: January 21, 2016
[Chazz emerges from behind a curtain to thunderous applause. He crosses to Perky’s desk and takes a seat on the guest couch, a bright red velvet sofa shaped like a pair of lips.]
Perky: Welcome, Chazz!
Chazz: Thanks, Perk. Are those new hair extensions?
Perky: You bet. Are those newly frosted tips?
Chazz: I’ll frost your tips!
Perky: So what’s this new project I’m hearing about? Something space?
Chazz: Yeah. Something super space. Ten intrepid explorers, all smokin’ hot and in the prime of their lives, risking their futures and dreams and shit for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hop into a rocket and fly to the outer reaches of the galaxy. It’s gonna be epic.
Perky: Wow. What a show!
Chazz: It’s so much more than a show, Perky. DV8, long at the forefront of cutting-edge reality experiences, has once again innovated the format beyond anything that’s been tried before. Waste of Space is going to be brought to you in real time. We’re talking live feeds, streaming 24/7 on DV8.com. And every Thursday episode will end with a live segment, coming directly from the spaceplane itself!
[applause]
Perky: And is this a competition? Will the participants be vying for a cash prize or a scholarship or something? Are there going to be challenges or games for them to play? Are they going to be eliminated?
Chazz: [chuckling] Patience, Perky. I can’t give away all my secrets.
Perky: Oh, Chazz, you’re so bad. [giggles] So the cast members
Chazz: Please, Perky, let’s not refer to them as cast members. Pioneers such as these deserve a far more dignified title.
Perky: Such as?
Chazz: Spacetronauts.
Perky: Fantastic. And I hear this is all being done in conjunction with a space agency, right? Are the Spacetronauts
gonna, like, do science while they’re up there? Experiments?
Chazz: Yeah. [saucily raises an eyebrow] On each other.
[Crowd hoots and hollers.]
Perky: I like what I’m hearing! Care to elaborate?
Chazz: All I can say is that we’re locking ten angst-ridden teenagers in an area no bigger than a small apartment for an extended period of time. You do the math.
Perky: Chaaaaazz. Are you implying that this will be the first-ever broadcast of hooking up in zero gravity?

Chazz: [winks at camera] You’ll have to tune in to find out.

From Goodreads.

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

This book was so cute y’all!!!! It wasn’t the epic, heart-wrenching, OMG my soul hurts High Fantasy that I normally love and am drawn to but, it was a fun quick read!

This book reminded me of a cross between Maria V Snyder’s Healer series and Rachel Hawkins Hex Hall series. It had the high fantasy aspects I love but it also had humor and snark. The MC Kyra had me laughing at some of her antics. Like crossing a river in a lacy slip with a pig on her head; yep that really happened and the scene is hilarious! And let’s talk about the pig... she’s a tracker like a kind of bloodhound and she was the cutest thing ever! She made me want to get a pig of my own lol. Oh and there’s a boy and he’s handsome, funny, smart, and a bit mysterious and I loved him! He totally reminded me of Archer from Hex Hall.

The story itself was kind of predictable but hey I had fun reading it and I think it’s a standalone; but if Ms. Zinn decided to delve back into this world I would definitely read it!

I chose a funny scene for you enjoy! J

For some reason, the ridiculous drinking song reminded Kyra of her dad. He would love Fred.

Kyra quashed the thought as quickly as it had sprung up on her. She couldn’t think of her family.

They sang it through together, complete with imaginary beer. The way he watched her sing made her feel as undressed as she’d been when they first met.

When they finished, Fred picked up the cooking pot. “I’m going to go give this a quick rinse.”

Kyra was warm all over. She pulled her bedroll out and snuggled down into it.

A few minutes later, a chuckle came from behind her. “Kitty, don’t be alarmed, but this part of the forest seems to be populated by a bush I’ve never seen before.”

“Hmmmm…?”

“It seems to be sprouting women’s underthings.”

Kyra sat bolt upright. “Leave those underthings alone.”

Fred sat beside her. “I wouldn’t dream of touching such an unusual plant. It’s probably poisonous.”
