Title: BURNING GLASS
Author: Kathryn Purdie
Release Date: March 1, 2016
Pages: 512
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Sonya was born with the rare gift to feel what those around her feel—both physically and emotionally—a gift she’s kept hidden from the empire for seventeen long years. After a reckless mistake wipes out all the other girls with similar abilities, Sonya is hauled off to the palace and forced to serve the emperor as his sovereign Auraseer.

Tasked with sensing the intentions of would-be assassins, Sonya is under constant pressure to protect the emperor. One mistake, one small failure, will cost her own life and the lives of the few people left in the world who still trust her.

But Sonya’s power is untamed and reckless, her feelings easily usurped, and she sometimes can’t decipher when other people’s impulses end and her own begin. In a palace full of warring emotions and looming darkness, Sonya fears that the biggest danger to the empire may be herself.

As she struggles to wrangle her abilities, Sonya seeks refuge in her tenuous alliances with the volatile Emperor Valko and his idealistic younger brother, Anton, the crown prince. But when threats of revolution pit the two brothers against each other, Sonya must choose which brother to trust—and which to betray.

BURNING GLASS is debut author Kathryn Purdie’s stunning tale of dangerous magic, heart-rending romance, and the hard-won courage it takes to let go.

Now on to the playlist! I've included YouTube videos for the ones I like I've also added YouTube links for the others :)

BURNING GLASS BOOK PLAYLIST

I love music, and I love to sing. I also play the guitar and have written songs for each of the stories I’ve written. Recently, I got to professionally record the song I wrote for BURNING GLASS, my debut novel, which was really fun.*

I love music so much that a song is always in my head from the first moment I wake up in the morning to the last winks before going to bed. Because I love to sing, I have to be very careful of what I listen to when I write. If I listen to vocal music while drafting, I am not productive because all those lyrics are circling my head! So I usually listen to film scores instead. I drafted almost all of BURNING GLASS to the film score for BELLE (written by my favorite composer, Rachel Portman).

Luckily, vocal music doesn’t get in the way of every part of my process! Below are songs I listened to while plotting and revising the novel.

“Can’t Pretend” - Tom Odell. This song encapsulates Sonya’s struggle as an empath and the darkness she often succumbs to when other people’s emotions overpower her.

“TheBeacon” - A Fine Frenzy. One of the main things that bonds my three main characters together is the fact that when they were children they were abandoned by their parents. This song reflects the journey of learning to love and trust again.

“KeepBreathing” - Ingrid Michaelson. Sometimes Sonya becomes selfish as she fights to cling to her own needs and feelings as everyone else’s impulses wrestle inside of her. She seeks for a balance between self-discovery and stepping outside her comfort zone to use her gift to help others. I can’t think of a better song that represents this than “Keep Breathing.”

“Supremacy” – Muse. This song is EPIC. It’s cinematic showdown music at its best. It first reminded me of Emperor Valko, but now it’s my go-to song for Sonya and Anton, too. It works for anyone who needs to rise to the occasion and kick some serious butt.

“Gypsy” – Shakira. Sonya was raised by the Romska, the nomadic people in the world of BURNING GLASS, and that upbringing has definitely influenced her. She doesn’t want to be trapped in one place and longs to be free.

“Dangerous” - Big Data (feat. Joywave). This song is both charming and hardcore—so like Valko.

“I HurtToo” - Katie Herzig. I can listen to this beautiful song on repeat for hours. It expresses all the angst and longing between Sonya and Anton so well.

“Falling”- The Civil Wars. This song is about falling OUT of love with someone, which isn’t why it resonates with Sonya’s journey, but it still captures the haunting mood of her struggle to claim her own identity when she often feels like just a mirror of other people’s emotions.

*Last of all, if you’d like to hear the song I wrote from Sonya’s point-of-view about Anton, here’s a link to me singing it live (in my basement, lol): http://kathrynpurdie.com/world-of-burning-glass/

*And if you’d like to download the professional recording (the mandolin and violin make it so pretty!), email your BURNING GLASS proof of purchase to kathrynpurdiebooks@gmail.com, and I’ll send you the download code. :-)

About Kathryn:
Kathryn’s love of storytelling began as a young girl when her dad told her about someone named Boo Radley while they listened to the film score of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. In high school and college, Kathryn focused on acting, poetry, guitar, and extensive journal writing. Years later, when she was in recovery from donating a kidney to her brother, inspiration for her first novel struck. She’s been writing darkly fantastical stories ever since. Her debut novel, BURNING GLASS, releases winter 2016 from HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen Books.
