From Goodreads. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back. Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn’t dead. Not this time. But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey. Her captor, John Hayden, claims it’s for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they’ve come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves. But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies. And unless Pierce is careful, this time there’ll be no escape.

I had never read a Meg Cabot book before Abandon nope not even The Princess Diaries (just watched the movie) so I was hoping since I liked the movie that her books would be fantastic. They were good but I was a bit disappointed with Abandon I felt like I was in the mind of a crazy person the whole time I was reading it. Honestly if I would have reviewed that one it would have been a so-so, especially after reading some other fantastic books about the underworld mythology.

On to Underworld this book was much better than the first! There was action and romance and I didn’t feel like I wanted to strangle Pierce through this one. The story was pretty predictable and I didn’t find myself connecting to the characters like I normally do in books but it was an enjoyable quick read. John the love interest was probably one of the main reasons I liked this story he’s very handsome and dangerous but he has a gentle side that I found endearing. I will definitely give book 3 a shot because I have to find out how all this ends.

Here’s a passage from the book.

John seized me by both shoulders, pulling me towards him so abruptly that Hope gave an alarmed flap of her wings.

“Pierce,” he said. “Do you mean that?”

When I pushed back some of the hair that had tumbled into my face and raised my dark eyes to meet his light ones, I saw that he was staring down at me with an intensity that burned.

“You’ll never mention going back to Isla Huesos again if I take you there right now, just this once, to talk to your cousin Alex?” he demanded. “You’ll give…cohabitation another chance?”
His sudden fierceness was making me nervous.

“Of course John,” I said, “But it’s not like I have a choice.”

“What if you did?” he asked, his grip tightening.

“I blinked. “But I can’t. You said----“

He gave me a little shake. “Never mind what I said. What if I was wrong?”

I reached up to lay a hand on his cheek. It felt a little scratchy, because he hadn’t shaved. I didn’t care about stubble. What I cared about was the desperate need I saw in his eyes. The need for me.

“I’d come back,” I said, simply, “to stay with you.”

A second later, the lake---and everything around it--- was gone.

  1. Well at least the love interest was good! That's always a plus! I'll probably wait until the thirds comes out and you read it to see if you liked it before I dedicate myself to this series.

  2. I've only ever read her adult stuff so I wasn't sure if I'd like Abandon. Though I had problems with some things, I actually really enjoyed it and can't wait to read Underworld, though I'm hoping for a bit of a darker story with the sequel. I'm glad to see you liked it better than the first one!
