Reaching up, my trembling hand gets just a few inches before my fingers touch cool stone. I blink. My lashes spider-touch my cheeks, and then that touch is gone, so my eyes must be open. The dull, compressed darkness is so absolute that I cannot see my shaking hand, even as I bend my elbow and press my fingers against my right eye, and then my left—gently, very gently—to make certain both still rest in their sockets pgs. 1-2.

I throw back my head and scream. Somewhere in the house above, there is one who hears me. The one who buried me alive. Pg 4.

I pad across my room to the heavy wooden door. Through the floor I can hear the house breathing. I position a thick book to keep the door from swinging more than half open.

Taking two steps back, I survey the room. The half-open door still feels…wrong. I adjust it, nudging the book with my foot. It creaks louder than a door should when moved so slightly.  I rest my hand against the wood—too long because feelings seep into me that are not my own.

     

The house wants me to open the door. To put the book back on the bureau, to straighten the rug. The house hates closed doors.

     

But completely open doors are as terrifying as being closed in with…whatever might find its way into my room. There are things, living and dead, creeping through these halls, and I’d rather they ignore me as I sleep… Pgs 5-6.

The stories are part of this place; they flutter around me like moths, dark and bloated, the size of my father’s hand.  Pg 7.

Roderick laughs as the wind blows old autumn leaves down from the overhanging eaves of the house, and they scatter around us like dismal confetti. Pg 43.

I touch the skirt of my dress, where the lace has deteriorated. Something about a hole in lace asks to be touched and expanded. Like a half-healed wound.  Pg 52.

I’m lying in Roderick’s arms.  The knife is on the floor, and I see blood on his white shirt, but I feel nothing. The house wanted this, but I don’t know why.

     

“The house isn’t haunted,” he says. “But I am.” Pg 137.

I look even closer. Now I see my flower garden, a verdant clearing, and at its center, a lone dandelion. My own garden at the beginning of spring. The picture has changed to encompass the small changes I’ve made.

Hope surges within me. I can change the future if I want to badly enough. Pg 152.

The candles flicker out, one by one, and a loud creaking sounds from all around us, as if the room is rearranging itself. Roderick grasps my shoulder in the sudden darkness. At the same time, Dr. Winston’s hand brushes my side and then falls away.  Pg 262.

The machine is pumping, pumping, pumping. The bellows puff air in and out. Something moves through miles of tubing, slow and sluggardly. It is my blood. I look down at my wrist. It is dripping; one drop after another falls into a wide pan below me, and then funnels into more tubing. It’s all made of sheep’s guts, I know, because I asked Dr. Winston once. Pg 305.

Roderick and I are lying on the floor of the drawing room. We are reflected in the great baroque mirror that covers the interior wall. The top of my head meets the top of his head, and we create a straight line. He has let his hair grow out a little, and our hair, twined together against the black rug, sparkles. It is impossible to tell which is his and which is mine. Pg 337.

The Photographs of The Cure for Dreaming

If you’re familiar with my debut novel, In the Shadow of Blackbirds, you already know I included historical photographs, illustrations, and WWI propaganda posters throughout the book. Photography—especially early-twentieth-century spirit photography—plays a major role in that novel, and as I prepared the manuscript for submission, I realized it would be fun to include actual photographs from the time period.

When I set out to write a second YA novel, I didn’t necessarily think archival photographs would be involved. My publisher didn’t specifically say, “Please send us another manuscript that contains historical images,” and at first the idea didn’t even cross my mind.

Then I found a 1900 photograph of a young hypnotized woman, laid out across two chairs, with her legs tied up with ropes. She’s in the “human plank” position, or “catalepsy,” as other stage hypnotists called it. Hypnotists would put volunteers into a trance, stretch them out between two chairs, and stand on their bodies, to show how rigid they’d become under hypnosis. The photograph intrigued and inspired me so much that I decided to have my fictional hypnotist, Henri Reverie, lay my protagonist, Olivia Mead, across two chairs on a stage and stand on top of her in the very first chapter of The Cure for Dreaming.  

That 1900 photograph absolutely had to go into the book. The image spoke volumes about both Victorian stage hypnotism and the restrictions placed upon women in the time period.

Inserting one historical image into the pages of my story inspired me to include others. Fearful that my “photo novels” would feel like a gimmick or a cheap imitation of Ransom Riggs’s books, I turned to other types of historical images—not just spooky and surreal ones, but ones that would bring my time period vividly to life: an illustration of a Victorian dental chair, a photograph of an anti-suffragist organization, photos of Victorian girls in a “domestic science” class, a poster of a scandalous play from the year 1900, and so forth. I also decided to include quotes from turn-of-the-twentieth-century literature and politics with the images. When you’re seeing an anti-suffragist photograph, you’re also viewing words spoken by an actual anti-suffragist from the late 1800s. Mark Twain’s descriptions of his experiences with an unnerving Victorian dentist accompanies one of the dentistry illustrations.  

My job as a historical novelist is to place my readers into a literary time machine. I want to strap people into their seats and blast them completely into the past by surrounding them with sights and sounds and smells from a time long gone. I believe archival photographs help to lend an authentic feel to my works of fiction, proving that the past I’m recreating in my books—pasts that often seem unbelievable—genuinely existed. Plus the images are highly entertaining!

Will my future novels also include historical photographs? Yes! At least, the ones currently under contract will. My debut adult fiction novel, The Uninvited, releases Summer 2015 from William Morrow, and I managed to squeeze a 1918 photo into one of the bonus sections at the back of the book. I’m currently hunting down 1920s images for my third YA novel, The Steep and Thorny Way, a Hamlet-inspired tale coming Spring 2016 from Amulet Books.

Over the summer, a TV series called Oregon Art Beat filmed me perusing a research library for images I could use in The Steep and Thorny Way. The episode, which also includes clips of me walking around historical sites mentioned in The Cure for Dreaming, will air October 30, 2014, on OPB in Oregon. My segment will eventually be available online at http://www.opb.org/television/programs/artbeat/, and you can watch for yourself how we historical novelists love to play detective—and how exhilarating it is for me to peek into past through these photographic windows.

Bringing Jinn the Modern World

I’m not really sure why we don’t see a lot of stories about the jinn in the West. In the Middle East and North Africa, these mythological creatures are a normal part of everyday life—ask many Moroccans and they’ll have story after story to share with you, some that they claim are true. The Arabian Nights is a classic read by millions of readers all over the world and countless little girls in the United States dress up as jinn for Halloween. Disney’s Aladdin was a huge hit in my childhood. Yet despite all of this, our interest in stories about vampires, werewolves, and witches is far greater: the jinn remain relatively unexplored.    

I myself didn’t know very much about jinn lore until a writing prompt inspired me to write about a jinni trapped in a bottle. But as soon as the idea came to me, I was hooked. I started thinking…what would it be like to have a master you had to grant wishes for? What if you hated him, and hated having to make his dreams come true? To me, it was endlessly fascinating, thinking about this incredibly powerful magical creature whose power wasn’t theirs to do with as they pleased. Whenever we see jinn portrayed, it is often as a slave. You don’t really think of the word jinni without the word master. I could have just taken the idea and run with it, but I wanted to go deeper into the stories these creatures come from. I had a feeling there was a lot more to the jinn than the conceit of the three wishes.

My main knowledge of the jinn came from watching old episodes of I Dream of Jeannie as a kid—going back and watching those now, I realize that Nalia, my jinn protagonist, would absolutely HATE the portrayal of the happy servant jinni (as do I!). While I continue to find Disney’s Aladdin immensely entertaining, it’s nothing like the original story in The Arabian Nights. I felt like the only way to bring these ancient creatures to a modern teen audience was to delve deeper into the mythology to make the jinn fresh and interesting to audiences who have an insatiable appetite for the fantastic, but have grown tired of the same old mythologies.

I researched everything I could about these creatures and, of course, delved into Arabian Nights. What I found was fascinating: many cultures are rife with jinn lore—not just the Arab world. I learned about ghouls and other creatures that haunt the desert and the variety of types of jinn. It was fascinating to hear how jinn lore intersected with Islamic faith and this was the first time I learned about the legend surrounding King Solomon’s ring, which plays a huge role in the Dark Caravan Cycle. I worked hard to incorporate as much of it as I could into the series and I try to honor the legends and cultures the stories come from in various ways. Sometimes it might be as simple as using a scent that evokes the cultures the jinn come from (sandalwood), or having Nalia’s master be Saudi, rather than just a rich American guy. But instead of writing historical fiction or a re-telling, I wanted to use jinn lore in the context of our modern world in order to make them more accessible and, again, to approach the mythology in a fresh way. My protagonist jinni lives in a mansion in the Hollywood hills and has to grant wishes to stock brokers and drug lords. Her master drives an Aston Martin. But Book Two takes the reader to Morocco, where I did a lot of research about jinn lore, and the third novel takes place in Arjinna, the jinni realm. One of the major geographical features of this land is the Qaf Mountains, which are a feature of the jinn realm in the ancient stories, but the rest of the land comes from my own imagination. It’s a constant balance between the ancient and the modern, my own ideas and those of storytellers who came long before me.

Right now, there aren’t a lot of books about jinn in YA, but we’re starting to see more. It is my hope that my series—as well as the other books that feature jinn that are coming out—will open up new avenues in YA fantasy.

NIKKI KELLY was born and raised only minutes away from the chocolately scent of Cadbury World in Birmingham, England. Lailah was first launched to wattpad, an online readers and writers community.
