Title: THE FALL
Author: Bethany Griffin
Pub. Date: October 7, 2014
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Pages: 432
Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Madeline Usher is doomed.

She has spent her life fighting fate, and she thought she was succeeding. Until she woke up in a coffin.

Ushers die young. Ushers are cursed. Ushers can never leave their house, a house that haunts and is haunted, a house that almost seems to have a mind of its own. Madeline’s life—revealed through short bursts of memory—has hinged around her desperate plan to escape, to save herself and her brother. Her only chance lies in destroying the house.

In the end, can Madeline keep her own sanity and bring the house down? The Fall is a literary psychological thriller, reimagining Edgar Allan Poe’s classic The Fall of the House of Usher.

Now on to the post!

Top Ten quotes from The Fall….There actually seem to be 11 here, including one fairly long one. Hahaha that's ok the more the merrier!

Reaching up, my trembling hand gets just a few inches before my fingers touch cool stone. I blink. My lashes spider-touch my cheeks, and then that touch is gone, so my eyes must be open. The dull, compressed darkness is so absolute that I cannot see my shaking hand, even as I bend my elbow and press my fingers against my right eye, and then my left—gently, very gently—to make certain both still rest in their sockets pgs. 1-2.

I throw back my head and scream. Somewhere in the house above, there is one who hears me. The one who buried me alive. Pg 4.

I pad across my room to the heavy wooden door. Through the floor I can hear the house breathing. I position a thick book to keep the door from swinging more than half open.

My candle flickers. I must have the door positioned correctly before it goes out.

Taking two steps back, I survey the room. The half-open door still feels…wrong. I adjust it, nudging the book with my foot. It creaks louder than a door should when moved so slightly.  I rest my hand against the wood—too long because feelings seep into me that are not my own.

The house wants me to open the door. To put the book back on the bureau, to straighten the rug. The house hates closed doors.

But completely open doors are as terrifying as being closed in with…whatever might find its way into my room. There are things, living and dead, creeping through these halls, and I’d rather they ignore me as I sleep… Pgs 5-6.

The stories are part of this place; they flutter around me like moths, dark and bloated, the size of my father’s hand.  Pg 7.

Roderick laughs as the wind blows old autumn leaves down from the overhanging eaves of the house, and they scatter around us like dismal confetti. Pg 43.

I touch the skirt of my dress, where the lace has deteriorated. Something about a hole in lace asks to be touched and expanded. Like a half-healed wound.  Pg 52.

I’m lying in Roderick’s arms.  The knife is on the floor, and I see blood on his white shirt, but I feel nothing. The house wanted this, but I don’t know why.

“The house isn’t haunted,” he says. “But I am.” Pg 137.

I look even closer. Now I see my flower garden, a verdant clearing, and at its center, a lone dandelion. My own garden at the beginning of spring. The picture has changed to encompass the small changes I’ve made.

Hope surges within me. I can change the future if I want to badly enough. Pg 152.

The candles flicker out, one by one, and a loud creaking sounds from all around us, as if the room is rearranging itself. Roderick grasps my shoulder in the sudden darkness. At the same time, Dr. Winston’s hand brushes my side and then falls away.  Pg 262.

The machine is pumping, pumping, pumping. The bellows puff air in and out. Something moves through miles of tubing, slow and sluggardly. It is my blood. I look down at my wrist. It is dripping; one drop after another falls into a wide pan below me, and then funnels into more tubing. It’s all made of sheep’s guts, I know, because I asked Dr. Winston once. Pg 305.

Roderick and I are lying on the floor of the drawing room. We are reflected in the great baroque mirror that covers the interior wall. The top of my head meets the top of his head, and we create a straight line. He has let his hair grow out a little, and our hair, twined together against the black rug, sparkles. It is impossible to tell which is his and which is mine. Pg 337.

Thanks Bethany for the awesome post! I love all of these quotes!

Blog Tour- DANCE OF THE RED DEATH by Bethany Griffin and a Giveaway!

Hey y’all! I have an awesome music post for you today! Bethany Griffin author of the amazing Masque of The Red Death and its sequel Dance of The Red Death has stopped by and I love her song choices! They are dark and some are haunting and we have very similar tastes in music. Ooh also there’s an awesome giveaway so check below and enter!

On to the awesome post and of course there will be YouTube videos!

I think mostly with this sort of book, that the playlist is about the mood for me, so the explanations aren't huge. I've added a favorite line from each song.

Dance of the Red Death playlist

Machine Gun- Portishead If I could only have one song that represents this book, this would be it. It's both pensive and aggressive, and perfect for Araby, in my opinion.
I think mostly with this sort of book, that the playlist is about the mood for me, so the explanations aren't huge. I've added a favorite line from each song.  http://www.jango.com/music/Portishead?l=0

if only I could see
You turn myself to me
and recognise the poison in my heart

Plainsong- The Cure This is the song that captures the mood of the world of Masque of the Red Death the best for me. Also, I love the lyrics. These are all of the lyrics.

"I think it's dark and it looks like rain" you said
"and the wind is blowing like it's the end of the
World" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
Cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
A second.
"I think I'm old and I'm in pain" you said
"and it's all running out like it's the end of the
World" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
Cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
A second

Sometimes you make me feel like I'm living at
The edge of the world like I'm living at the edge
Of the world "it's just the way I smile" you said

The Beginning Is the End is the Beginning- Smashing Pumpkins This one also makes me think of the world and the hopelessness of it.

Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain

Something I Can Never Have- Nine Inch Nails- The emotion in this song always speaks to me (there's a lovely pared down version that's amazing, though I also love the original, and it's perfect for this world because it's about yearning, and about things you can't have).  http://vimeo.com/61676920 (One of Jaime's All Time Favorite Songs and Albums btw)

I still recall the taste of your tears.
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore.
Scraping through my head 'till I don't want to sleep anymore.

Fear- Sarah McLachlan This is the song that most reminds me of Will and Araby.
but I fear
I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose
here in this lonely place
tangled up in our embrace
there's nothing I'd like
better than to fall

Possession- Sarah McLachlan This is a love song that isn't really a love song. I love the line about tears. I actually just love this song

Through this world I've stumbled
So many times betrayed,
Trying to find an honest word,
To find the truth enslaved,
Oh you speak to me in riddles and
You speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath,
Your words keep me alive

Roads- Portishead Roads is Araby's song as she finds herself and her strength.
Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say

Under the Milkyway Tonight - The Church This song reminds me of Araby in the beginning of the story, when she's very much searching for something. In fact, she's searching throughout both books.

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty
Sound of their breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the Milky Way tonight

The Day the World Went Away- Nine Inch Nails this is my Prince Prospero song.

I'd listen to the words he'd say
but in his voice I heard decay
the plastic face forced to portray
all the insides left cold and gray
there is a place that still remains
it eats the fear it eats the pain
the sweetest price he'll have to pay
the day the whole world went away

Thanks so much for sharing Bethany!!! I had to post all of the videos because I love these songs so much !!!!!

This week the book I’m dying to read is Dance of The Red Death by Bethany Griffin! I fell in love with this story at page one of Masque and I cannot wait to read Dance! I also fell in love with both the boys in this story and normally by the end I can choose which one I like better. Not in this story! So I am dying to get my hands on book 2 to see if Elliot or Will finally wins my heart completely!

Masque of The Red Death Blog tour and a Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on the Masque of the Red Death blog tour! Today we have the honor of hosting the amazing Bethany Griffin who answered some of Jaime’s burning questions about Masque, writing, and birthdays! Yep you heard that right, birthdays why you ask? Well not only is today our tour stop day but also Bethany’s birthday. Happy Birthday Bethany!!!!!! Yay *throws confetti* *cracks open the champagne* and because it’s Bethany’s birthday we’re giving away a present! One signed ARC of the Masque of the Red Death  a gorgeous bookmark, and an awesome leather wristband with a quote from the book!

On to the Q&A and we love Bethany’s answers!

1. Why Poe and why Masque? What made you decide to pick that instead of say…. The Fall of The House of Usher or The Tell Tale Heart?

Well, I don't have any reason NOT to write/retell any of Poe's other stories, but  there are a million reasons for Masque of the Red Death. The themes of Masque, trying to cheat death, the idea of a rich upper class trying to cheat death by partying while the world falls apart, these are relevant and timely, and...interesting. I've always loved dystopian and post-apocalyptic books, The Handmaid's Tale, The Stand, and The Giver are three of my all time favorite books. But I wasn't willing to even attempt any of those genres until I felt I had something interesting and unique. When I started re-reading Poe's The Masque of the Red Death, the ideas that were percolating in my head were (or at least seemed) unique and different, and that gave me the impetus to start this project. And once I started it, I really couldn't stop. I loved writing it.

Jaime loved reading it J

2. Did you always plan on writing both of the male characters Will and Elliott to be so darned different but lovable? Usually in books there’s a clear choice whom the heroine should be with but in yours it’s almost impossible to choose.

Honestly, I don't know. I do love both of them in different ways. Elliott was fun because he is so messed up (you'll learn a bit more about that in book 2) and Will is mysterious and so different from you expect the first time you meet him. I loved writing them. And I agree with your assessment that there is no clear cut choice at the end of book 1. I had a basic plan for the story, but when I sat down to write the outline for book 2, I had to really second guess my choices and think about who she  would end up with and why.

Ok dying to know here but we know we’ll have to wait…… (very impatiently)

3. The cover art for Masque is gorgeous!!! Was it love at first sight when you saw it? Is that what you pictured Araby looking like?

I thought it was beautiful when I saw it. But now that I've seen the effects, the glowing background and the raised lettering, the entire package of the book, I'm totally in love with it. I guess I see the girl on the cover as sort of symbolic representation of Araby, rather than like an exact portrait. That's really how I like to see characters on book covers, I guess, sort of symbolic and representational (which is another reason I LOVE my cover).

We loved it too it’s very haunting and beautiful!

4. Oh and the Debauchery Club (loved it btw) how did you imagine this multi-leveled place with secrets and danger? Was there a location that you had maybe seen or is it all made up?

The Debauchery Club is based on Victorian Gentleman's clubs, or private clubs where people would have gone to drink and gamble, hang out? I don't know. I had a vague idea what those sort of places might be like, and then I changed it in ways that I thought were awesome and cool and worked for the story. Of course I needed the club to be open to females, and teenage girls at that. I'm pretty happy with it. I've seen a few reviewers who said that not enough Debauchery happens there...but I think we see enough. We see what Araby is okay with seeing.

Haha Jaime thought it was perfect no one wants to see all the seedy things going on. Some things are better left to the imagination ;)

5. Did you listen to any music when you were writing Masque? What was your playlist?

Ah, the Playlist question. I don't actually listen to music while I write (okay, sometimes the LORT soundtrack, but don't tell anyone) but really, music with lyrics is distracting to me. When I do listen to music, is when I walk, and I amble around a lot when writing. When writing Masque I listened to a lot of Portishead, a lot of Nine Inch Nails, and quite a bit of Tool.

Just had to say Hell Yes to Portishead, Tool, and Nine Inch Nails!!!! Jaime loves those bands and they totally popped into her head when thinking of the Debauchery club and certain other scenes.

6. So we know April 16th is your birthday and it just happens to be our tour stop day ;) what was the best birthday present you ever received?

Oh wow, that's a good question. I'm not really a surprise person, I'm more of a carefully choose something and think about it for three months before the event happens sort of person, but, when I was in 6th grade, my grandmother took me to Hawaii over spring break, so for my birthday, which was the week before, my mom bought me this fancy underwater 35mm camera, complete with a variety of cases and accessories. It was awesome, and way too expensive for a 6th grader.

Oh what a great mom and grandma! That would have been an awesome birthday!

7.  So we know you’re going to be in Salt Lake City for the Smart Chicks Kick It tour in September. What’s the rest of your tour schedule look like? And how excited are you to get out and meet your readers?

I'm going to be at BEA, and I'm checking for more information...if I don't get back to you on this email me!

Oh poop we’re not going to BEA. Haha don’t worry we will ;)

8. Last question any tips for our aspiring writers out there?

I think you just have to find the thing that's right for you. Masque is such a weird blend of all the genres I read growing up, and all this weird knowledge I have about different time periods. My first published book, which I'm still really proud of, was realistic contemporary, and I didn't have anything particularly new or insightful to add to that genre. It wasn't until I figured out what I could do that was different that I really found my voice/niche. So, find what you want to do...what you are good at...and don't ever stop trying. I've written a lot of manuscripts.

Thanks so much Bethany for answering our questions! And happy birthday again hope your day totally rocks! Make sure to check out Jaime's review of Masque of the Red Death Here
