Asylum Blog Tour Day 2 and Twitter Party Day

It’s day 2 of the Asylum blog tour and we’re stoked to have a small POV from the hottest vampire out there Caden! Just a few quick things before we get to the excerpt.

Today at 7pm EST or 4 pm PST we are hosting a twitter party for the release of Asylum so make sure to follow Patricia, Jaime, and Kathleen on twitter and tune in she’s giving away eBooks of Asylum and bookmarks make sure to follow the hashtag #AsylumParty. The best part is if you haven’t read Anathema yet never fear it’s free right now there will be links to get it after the excerpt. Also make sure to follow along the tour stops there’s eBook and signed book giveaways!

Now here’s the excerpt....

Second Chances: Caden’s POV

I opened my eyes to see blurry black lines against a sky blue background looming over me. I don’t remember this…Had I been…asleep? That was impossible! After being conscious for seven hundred and forty-odd years, the very idea of time passing without me bearing witness was unthinkable. Yet, here I was now… Where was I?

I blinked several times. The blurry black lines sharpened into a spider web-like pattern against a glass dome - unspoiled, undamaged by time. This is new. Rolling my head to one side, I found beautiful, pristine brick walls and manicured gardens surrounding me; to the opposite side, silky blonde curls. Amelie, my sister. Wild emerald-green eyes told me she was disoriented as well. Slowly, I pulled my tall, lean body up - first to a sitting position and then to my feet. Every muscle screamed in protest, still not fully awake from whatever ordeal I had endured.

That was when I saw them. Bodies, sprawled throughout the atrium. So many of them. So many of my kind; all of them either unconscious or barely coherent.

“We’re here!” Amelie gasped beside me, also on her feet. “She did it!”

It clicked.

Exhilaration tore through me like a violent storm. With awe, I absorbed every detail long-since lost to us with renewed focus - the working light fixtures, the perfectly-shaped cobblestone paths, the polished silver car. These were not the signs of a world long-since void of humans, destroyed by war. These were the signs of a thriving world. A new world. A human world.

I slowly spun on my heels, drinking in this beautiful sight of which I never fathomed I’d see again. Everywhere I turned, hope flourished and possibilities exploded…

A single tall, sleek figure stood some distance away from me, her long corn silk blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, her startling chocolate brown eyes locked on my face. She stood with fists balled up against her lean thighs, her chest holding a lungs-worth of air. Fear and uncertainty stared back at me, her brow crooked questioningly.
Evangeline.

I couldn’t sense her blood! That sweet nectar coursing through millions of veins - that which made her human - was surely there but I couldn’t smell it! Nothing had changed from our time on Ratheus. But perhaps everything had changed! Were we immune to that unmanageable blood lust after being without human blood for so long? Yes. I felt the corners of my mouth crook into a smile. That would make this transition so much easier!
Evangeline saw me smile. Serenity washed over her face. She smiled back. I breathed a sigh of relief.

That was when my nostrils caught it - the first hints of intoxicating sweetness, tickling my senses. There was only one like it and it was impossible to ignore, impossible to forget, even after seven hundred years of being without. In another second, the full impact hit me, a microburst of desire, my entire body rippling with exhilaration, my vision tunnelling to one thing. One thing only. Nothing else mattered. My eyes began to burn. That meant the hideous veins were revealing themselves, pulsating.

She was so close…I took a rigid step forward. No! I mustn’t give in. I’ll lose control. I’ll lose myself. I took a deep breath, gritting my teeth, trying to restrain myself. But another tidal wave of desire hit me, even more powerful than the first, almost buckling my knees.

Just a taste…

A giant black muzzle blocked my view just as I heard Evangeline scream ,”No!” and then it disappeared along with her and that delicious sweet liquid flowing through her frail veins.

I know what you’re thinking “OH NO!” right? Well to find out what happens you’ll need to read the books and let us tell you they are awesome! Jaime read Asylum and it is incredible! Lie or Die Flash Fiction: The Winning Idea

The judges have met, deliberated, and after much debate, decided. It wasn't easy. There were some really amazing ideas. And we would have loved to see all of them written by all five authors. But that wouldn't be very fair. Not really, anyway.

So, after a few punches, kicks, screams and much pulling of hair, we quietly sat down and agreed that the winner should be....

Aeicha Matteson

Congratulations Aeicha your idea was absolutely awesome. One that we think will result in some very different story ideas by the authors, one that can pose a bit of a challenge for them, and ultimately one we could all agree upon!

So, here's the idea that is being revealed live, at this very moment, to the authors. They've had no previous knowledge or peek at the winning idea, so they're all getting it at the same time. No unfair advantage here. For the authors who don't stalk our blogs early, well, they get that much less time to toy with this.

THE IDEA

The characters:
Ryder- Female, human, teenager, short in height, long brown hair w/blue streaks, bright green eyes, smart, sassy, tough.

Ax- (short for Aximander) Male, demon (but was once human before being sent to hell), as a demon he has no permanent form, thus he possesses humans. He's cunning, vindictive, but incredibly charismatic.

The conflict:
Ryder is a supernatural hunter (she hunts demons, monsters, evil baddies), but she has been possessed by the demon Ax, who has essentially bound himself to her. Meaning no simple exorcism will release him. Ryder must find a way to break free of Ax while fighting for control of her own mind, body, and actions.

Their abilities:
Ryder- as a hunter she is skilled in weapons, fighting, and supernatural knowledge/lore but does not have "supernatural or magical" abilities of her own.

Ax- can shift/shimmer (teleport anywhere, including hell) and has enhanced/heightened abilities (strength, speed, hearing)...when possessing someone these abilities are transferred into them while Ax resides within them.

Awesome, right? We are all super excited to see what these five incredibly talented authors come up with!

The authors will have until October 18th to write their 800 word flash fiction story. And on October 19th, all five stories will be revealed on all five of the participating blogs.

You will have a chance to vote for your favorite idea and enter to win the grand prize.

For more details in the meantime, be sure to check out the Lie Or Die contest page,
HERE.

Don't forget to stop back on October 19th. Author GP Ching will be posting her short story based on the winning idea here! We're very excited to see what she comes up with and you'll have a chance to vote for her, or any other of the participating author's stories!

Lie or Die Flash Fiction Showdown: Step 1: Submit Your Idea Now!

Here is your chance to come up with a story idea and have not 1 but 5 authors spin it into an 800 word flash fiction tale! That’s 5 different YA paranormal authors with their own style and their own creativity taking your idea in 5 directions! Where will they go? You’ll have to wait until Oct 19th to find out.

But, for now, get your story idea in! You have from Sept 29, 2011 12:00am to Oct 8th, 2011 11:59pm EST to submit your ideas by choosing characters, conflict and abilities. Details are in the form, which is linked at the bottom of the post. Only entries into the form will be considered.

Anyone can enter their idea (open to international) and the winning idea will win a print book of their choice from one of the participating authors. What should you enter? Well, seeing as all of the authors are YA Paranormal writers, chances are anything to do with a hot, young heroine/hero of the non-human type will spark their interest. But, so could a grotesque villain…Should it be regular old Earth or a dystopian world? Should unicorns frolic and mermaids flap about? Should there be a love triangle? YOU DECIDE!

Example:
Characters - "Bill" - a male vampire, tall, dark and boring, prefers computers to good times, over 150 years old. "Sookie" - a female human, blond, barmaid, perky, Southern, sweet and hospitable but will resort to extreme violence when provoked.

Conflict - Someone wants Sookie dead. People she knows are being killed and it looks like Sookie is next. AND, there's a new vampire in town. He's tall, blond, sexy and powerful. While Bill may be old reliable, there's just something about Eric that she can't resist.

Abilities - "Bill" - speed, strength, can heal with his blood. "Sookie" - telepathic, good with a shotgun.

On Oct 9th, our 5 expert judges a.k.a fabulous bloggers Fiktshun,Two Chicks on Books (Us), Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, A Life Bound by Books, and Taking it One Book at a Time, will choose THE IDEA, based purely on what sounds like the most fun to read about and announce it at Sunday, 6pm EST.

From there, the authors will have 10 days to take the idea and run with it.

****UPDATE****

Starting Friday, 9/30, for a daily chance to win an eBook from Amazon of one of the participating author’s books of your choice, submit your idea and tweet the following:

“I submitted my story idea for the #LieOrDie event! Go submit yours!”

You only need to submit one idea, but you can have a chance to win an eBook each day through October 8th, by tweeting and spreading the word. The daily winners will be announced on Twitter.

For those of you who haven't read Anathema or would like to find out more you can read Jaime's review here. After Kathleen's guest post we will have some exciting contest news so keep reading ;) So without further ado here's Kathleen's guest post....

.
Hey, Jaime and Patricia (a.k.a Two Chicks)! First I’d like to thank you both for hosting me on your awesome blog for Day 2 of my book tour. Jaime – you were the first reviewer to sign up for a review of Anathema and you’ve been in my corner with bucket-loads of support since finishing it. I am forever grateful to you. Every author needs a book blogger like you in their corner. Or a hundred.J
Jaime asked what inspired me to write Anathema and what inspires me to write in general. That’s a big question. I’ll try to answer it as best as I can.
What inspired me to write Anathema? It’s pretty simple and not very poetic.  Three months’ into a year-long maternity leave with my second daughter, I was having trouble thinking. I felt stupid. I couldn’t focus. I wasn’t using my brain and I was mentally tired because of it. This had happened to me during my leave with my first child as well. I knew it would be harder to shake the longer I let it go on. I needed to find a way to kick start things up there.
In addition to my baby brain, I was facing considerable daily stress. My newborn had a temper and set of lungs to rival any banshee (she still does) and my older daughter was recently identified as a ‘special needs’ child   - needs we are still learning about and certainly didn’t have a grasp of two years ago. For these reasons, I needed an escape.
So I began thinking about writing a book. I’ve had my nose in books from a very young age and I always did well in my English classes.  It sounded like a great challenge and way to keep my brain from going dormant. It was something I could take on while the kids napped and after they went to bed. So… I jumped in with both feet. I’m like that. I get an idea and I run with it.  Anathema began with a very simple question: “What would happen if vampires took over the world?”  I spent the next year- and- a- half answering it.
From that need for sanity and brain stimulation, I stumbled upon a true passion. I’m beginning to think it’s what I was meant to do all along (no need for those painful Economics and Calculus courses, after all).  The biggest inspiration for me to write is hearing how much my readers loved the worlds and characters I created for them in Anathema. I was so so so nervous when my ebook was first published. What if people hated it? What if I couldn’t write my way out of a paper bag?  I prepared myself for the worst in hope of avoiding the bitter shock of that sort of reader response. When I received my first review by a blogger and it was super-positive, I couldn’t stop smiling.  I was pumped. Now, each new positive review gives me a shot of adrenaline, both for validation of my hard work and because I am genuinely happy that I can give something enjoyable to book lovers out there. For me, there’s nothing better than getting lost in a fictional world and bonding with the characters. Now I’ve given that to others and it inspires me to give them more. Like Book 2, perhaps. J
What else inspires me to write? My need to make the most of my time on this planet and leave my mark. Not a huge mark. Just a mark. That’s never been such a big push for me before. Up until recently, I’ve been satisfied with the practical path – finish school, find good job, get married, buy house, have kids. And then… what ? Well, now that I’ve had a taste of what it’s like to write and publish a novel, I’m addicted for life. I’m in a rush to do as much as I can before my time runs out and I wish I had started sooner. I love stretching my brain creatively. I love inventing worlds and people and storylines. I could easily spend my days in my lulus and fuzzy socks, scheming. I love to ‘scheme’ as my husband calls it. Apparently I’m a natural – it sounds manipulative and sinister but it’s a wonderful trait to have when you’re developing plots with bad guys J
Thank you to Two Chicks on Books for inviting me here today to talk about my new obsession. I hope your followers get a chance to read the outcome of my quest for sanity and fall in love with the worlds and characters I’ve created.

Synopsis from Kathleen's blog
Evangeline has spent her teenage years in obscurity. Her foster parents have the emotional aptitude of robots and her classmates barely acknowledge her existence. About to turn eighteen and feeling like a social pariah, she is desperate to connect with someone. Anyone.

When Evangeline meets Sofie after literally stumbling upon her café, she believes she’s found that connection. Willing to do anything to keep it, she accepts a job as Sofie’s assistant and drops everything to fly to Manhattan, where she is thrust into a luxurious world of Prada, diamonds, and limitless cash.

With such generosity and kindness, it’s easy for Evangeline to dismiss certain oddities . . . like Sofie’s erratic and sometimes violent behavior, and the monstrous guard dogs. She’s even willing to dismiss her vivid dreams of mob-style murders, beautiful homeless people living in caves, and white-eyed demons that haunt her each night as figments of her imagination—especially when one of those figments is the gorgeous Caden. When she wakes up with bite marks on her neck, the fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare. She slowly unravels the mystery surrounding Sofie and friends, and the reality of the bites and the “dreams.” What she discovers is far more mysterious and terrible than anything she could have imagined.

In a world where everyone has motive to lie for personal gain, Evangeline must decide which deception is least likely to get her killed.

Jaime's review.....

Kathleen Tucker's debut novel Anathema was an amazing read! I couldn't categorize it as a Urban Fantasy YA read alone as there are some Dystopian aspects to it as well. The two different worlds she has created are both wonderfully amazing places one set in New York with shopping trips to Prada and extravagant homes. The other a world where theres no technology around and people live in caves with warm underground springs with beautiful waterfalls. The twist is whats the kicker here and I wish I could tell you all but I can't it would spoil the story so you'll have to read it to find out.

I absolutely fell in love with the MC Evangeline and her band of friends Caden, Amelie, Bishop, Fiona, Max, and Sophie. Each character had a personality that jumped right off the pages. I wanted to shop with Sophie, have girl talk with Amelie and Fiona, go fishing with Bishop, make out with Caden *swoons*, and cuddle up next to Max by the fire and read.

The story itself was beautifully written I admit at first I was like what's going on how could all this make sense? Then just as i was scratching my head going WTH the answers to my questions were revealed and let me tell you when you get those answers you'll be like whoa didn't see that coming! The answers are well worth the wait and now I want more I need book two now! I wish I could tell you more but I'd have to post spoilery and I don't do that so if you want to find out what I'm talking about buy the book!

Thank you miss Kathleen Tucker for the copy of Anathema for review!
