The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor's favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family's standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she's quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she's ever known.

Now on to the interview!

Hey Renée! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! It’s been a while since you’ve been here I’m so happy you could stop by for a chat! FLAME IN THE MIST was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you give us a little info on FLAME IN THE MIST and the characters?

Absolutely! FITM is the story of Mariko, a girl who barely escapes an assassination attempt and then decides to infiltrate a clan of ninja and disguise herself as a boy in order to figure out who tried to kill her. Of course, once she’s there, she learns from the leader of this band of ninja that not is all as it seems.

So do we have a title for book 2 yet?

We do! I can’t quite share it yet, but it’s so in keeping with the spirit of the series.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

The main character, Mariko, was inspired by Hermione Granger and my brilliant younger sister.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I loved writing Mariko. I’d say my least favorite was probably the emperor.

What is your favorite passage/scene in FLAME IN THE MIST?

I think it’s probably the one that takes place at a tea house. There are lots of sensory details and a fight scene that erupts, so it was a lot of fun to write.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story? Why Feudal Japan?

I read a lot of philosophy on the time period, especially when it came to bushido. I have East Asian heritage, and I always knew I wanted to write a book based in an East Asian culture.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

I have a special place in my heart for Jalal because he was inspired by my husband.

What inspired you to write YA?

YA books are the books I’ve always read and been passionate about. FITM is essentially the book I wished I had as a teenager.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I’m reading Marie Lu’s WARCROSS, and it is amazing!

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Slytherin. Multiple times!

Twitter or Facebook?

Instagram

Favorite Superhero?

Storm or Tony Stark

Favorite TV show?

Game of Thrones

Sweet or Salty?

Salty

Any Phobias?

Spiders

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble”

2017 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Wonder Woman

Thanks so much Renée for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read FLAME IN THE MIST! Big hugs!!!!

Thank YOU so much <3 o:p="">

The thrilling finale to the New York Times bestselling Young Elites series from “hit factory” Marie Lu.

There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all that she’s achieved.

Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds when a new danger appears, putting not only Adelina at risk, but every Elite and the very world they live in. In order to save herself and preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

Bestselling author Marie Lu concludes Adelina's story with this haunting and hypnotizing final installment to the Young Elites series.

Now on to my post!

Top 5 reasons to read The Young Elites Series I'll use a couple quotes sent by Penguin teen.

1. There aren't any good guys (not really) the MC's in the book and most of the other characters are bad guys. I wouldn't even call them anti-heroes although some may.

2. The worldbuilding is absolutely breathtaking! It's set in a fantasy world but it's an awful lot like Europe.

3. I love the multiple POV's.

4. The swoon worthy boys! Yes I am an Enzo girl but Maggiano and Teren are pretty hot too!

5. Marie just knows how to write a beautiful story. Even though I most of the characters got under my skin at times I still couldn't stop myself from reading to see what came next!

About Marie:
I write young adult novels, and have a special love for dystopian books. Ironically, I was born in 1984. Before becoming a full-time writer, I was an Art Director at a video game company. Now I shuffle around at home and talk to myself a lot. :)

I graduated from the University of Southern California in '06 and currently live in LA, where I spend my time stuck on the freeways.
