I remembered the spell for a vanilla ice cream with sprinkles on top.

I knew I wasn’t supposed to do any magic, especially with a Computawand that wasn’t mine, but an ice cream cone would be yummy. If I ate it quickly, no one would know.

I pressed 4-3-2-bleep-bleep-boop. Then I waved the wand and said “Sprinkleridoo!”

Hi Two Chicks on Books!  Thank you so much for having me.   You have a wonderful blog, so much interesting stuff and all about the books I love.

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about EXTRAORDINARY OCTOBER and the characters?

EXTRAORDINARY OCTOBER is about a high school senior who thinks she’s absolutely ordinary and average in every way.  The only thing unusual is her name, October, and that just makes people laugh.  Then, days before her eighteenth birthday, she develops a strange itch that won’t go away and her life is turned upside down.  Suddenly, crows are after her and she can understand animals, she sees things she never saw before and a strange mark appears on her leg.  On top of that, a couple of handsome guys at school are vying for her affections.  October learns she is not ordinary at all, but the daughter of a troll princess and a fairy prince, and a pawn in a deadly war between the trolls and the fairies.  Suddenly she’s extraordinary, and that just might get her killed.

Is this a standalone or a series? And if it’s a series do you have a title for book 2 yet? And if it’s a standalone what are you working on next?

I wrote it as a stand alone, but friends have been pushing me to write another eleven  (!!) books.  One for every month:  Superlative November,  Confounding December, Tumultuous January, etc.  As yet I don’t have a plan for that, although if anyone wants to send me title ideas, maybe it will inspire me.   I’m currently working on a mystery about a dogcatcher – oops, they hate that term -- I mean an animal control officer.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

I think all the characters I’ve ever written contain bits of people I know.  October has a kind of wiseass voice that my daughter sometimes uses.  She was the inspiration for this book; she was horribly teased in elementary school about her belief in fairies and magical beings and when she was about 14 she said to me, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could turn into a fairy now and show all those kids?”  The idea was born! So there is a lot of her in it.  In the book there’s a boy at school who teases October who is based on one of those elementary school bullies.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

My favorite character to write was October.  I loved being inside her head, figuring things out, becoming aware—with her—of her power and strength and intelligence.  The hardest character to write was Trevor, one of the two boys after her.  It was easy to make him a bad guy, but I wanted him to be more likeable, more complicated than that.  He wasn’t a bad guy, only misguided.

What is your favorite passage/scene in EXTRAORDINARY OCTOBER?

It’s short, but I’m partial to the scene with the fireflies.  October sees them out the window of the bus and gets out a couple stops early to look at them up close.  They make her happy – as they do me whenever I see them.  We don’t have fireflies in Los Angeles and I miss them.  Seeing them out the bus window is as rare and magical as as if it had snowed in LA – in just that one empty lot.  October’s never seen fireflies before and she is entranced.  Later they come to her aid, but that first scene always makes me smile.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Kind of embarrassing to say, but I did go to a hypnotist a couple of times.  I heard it would help my insomnia and I thought I’d try it, plus I was so curious.  I guess I could call it research.  It helped me come up with Madame Gold, although it didn’t help with my insomnia!   And I spent time hiking the LA River and thinking about the entrance to fairyland.  Parts of the river are beautiful and lush, but there are homeless encampments under the trees and lots of trash.  I saw an egret, a stunning white crane-like bird, standing on a rusty shopping cart surrounded by garbage.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Oh jeez, do I have to say Mr. Darcy?   Of course, of course Mr. Darcy.  But actually King Arthur always did it for me.  Not Lancelot, the elitist creep.  I always thought Guinevere was an idiot to fool around with him when she was married to King Arthur.  And I had a little thing for Merlin too, but the young Merlin of course.  It’d be handy to have a magical boyfriend.

What inspired you to write YA?

As I said above, it was my daughter.  Because of her experience, I wanted to write a story about a girl who sees magic where others don’t and who doesn’t listen to the naysayers and realizes her own self-worth.   She gains confidence.  I also wanted it to be about accepting other people for who they are, and being open to new things.  I wanted her to be a young protagonist so these discoveries would be extraordinary.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I am really looking forward to Lilliam Rivera’s The Education of Margot Sanchez.  It’s not a fantasy or magical, but Rivera is a great writer and this is a story about a girl whose father grounds her and she will do anything to get out of it.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Ravenclaw! 

Twitter or Facebook?

I like to read Twitter, but rarely does someone like my tweets!  I have more active friends on Facebook.   As a countdown to the Extraordinary October launch, I’m doing an alphabetical listing of a magical creature a day on Facebook.  That has been so much fun.  Finding a creature for “J” was really difficult.

Favorite Superhero?

Poison Ivy!  She’s a supervillain and an environmentalist.  Love that she uses plant toxins to destroy her enemies – while trying to save the earth.

Favorite TV show?

I loved Braindead – but it’s over.  The politics and ridiculousness (maybe those two things always go together?) made me laugh out loud.

Sweet or Salty?

Salty.  I will eat popcorn any time of the day or night.  Right now!

Any Phobias?

I don’t know how to swim and I’m kind of afraid of water over my head.  Swimming pool?  Okay.  Ocean?  Not so much.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Fall Movie you’re most looking forward to?

“La La Land” with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.  It looks romantic and absolutely magical.  Just watching the trailer made me cry. 

Author Bio:
I have always written and always wanted to be a writer, but didn’t think I could make a living at it. So I became a mime. (You can imagine what my father had to say about that.) I worked on the streets of NYC with two partners, stopping traffic in front of the Met and annoying tourists. When, to my great surprise, that didn’t work out, I returned to school in film–thinking screenwriters made a living. And when I had ten scripts and my agent had stopped returning my calls, I wrote a novel. I did it just because I wanted to love writing again and not think about selling or casting or marketability. That novel was Skin Deep, and it’s a testament to writing from your heart that the first person to read it, bought it. I’ve been trying to write from the heart ever since.

Hi William! Welcome to Two Chicks on Books! Let me just say I have become a big fan of yours and I can’t wait for the readers to meet you! Ok so on to my questions….

You’ve led a rather colorful life can you tell me the most exotic place you’ve traveled to? What about the ugliest?

I said goodbye to the ugliest place when I left home, although the cabin of my fellow pirate Fane’s ship is a fairly vile venue. As for the most exotic… I’ve traveled all over the world, seen deserts and frozen wastelands, outsmarted the authorities of a hundred nations, and said goodbye to dozens of extraordinary women. Choosing just one would be impossible.

Have you always been a pirate? How was your childhood?

I was born with the hat and a pistol. Not really, of course, but I do like to think I’ve always had a pirate’s spirit. I grew up wondering why people are so eager to fit themselves and others into boxes. It’s restrictive and unnatural. The pirate’s life revolves around freedom and honesty – laugh if you will, but what’s more honest than following one’s instincts and innate desires? That’s the life I was born to live.

You seem to have a pretty big fan club. Lots of girls I noticed…Do you have a girlfriend?

I don’t like to be tied down. There are women I respect, women I spend time with, certainly… but I wouldn’t say I have a girlfriend, per se. It’s a simple matter of independence. Independence is paramount for me. Not to mention, attachments endanger the people in my life. I couldn’t stand to paint a target on anyone’s back.

What is the most important or most impressive thing that you have stolen?

A man’s life.

What’s a day like in the life of William Wolfram Pyrite?

It depends on whether I’m on the open sea or at port. When I’m at sea, every day is either a primitive battle for survival against the elements, or a beautiful merging with them. The sun on my back, windburn from the sails, storms, the view from the crow’s nest, it’s always heaven or hell and nothing in between. I love the extremes. Seizing transport ships and stealing from the wealthy fat cats… hurting them heals me. At port, relaxation rules. My mates and I wile away our time at the Paladin, a pub on the shore of Sheness where music and drinking and rowdy behavior is the norm. It’s a perfect life.

You are definitely mysterious. Are there any secrets you’d like to tell us?

Well now, if I told you my secrets, the mystery would ebb away, now wouldn’t it? But I’ll let you in on just one, if you promise to keep it between us. The first time I met Fane, he stabbed me. Then a month later, he was holding me up while I vomited my way toward getting my sea legs. That’s right… William Wolfram Pyrite got horribly, terribly seasick.

Anything you’d like to tell our readers?

Just that I can’t wait to meet them all… and I bet they’re all lookers. ;) And, of course, a big thank-you for having me.

With a perfect blend of humor and suspense, Endlessly is everything readers could dream of in a conclusion—and the unexpected twists will keep them guessing until the very last page.

One thing I absolutely love about Kiersten White’s books is that she tells a good story and that story has humor. I mean laugh out loud humor! Thanks Kiersten for that and for writing a series that I really liked and was sad to see end! Her books aren’t overly gloomy, heart wrenching, or angsty so if you’re looking to be tortured you won’t be… or at least I wasn’t. That being said there were some scenes that did make me a little angry and those included Reth. I love that fairy and it was hard to see some of the things that happen to him in this book.

Team Evie and Lend fans will be very happy with the ending to this series. It wraps up nicely but not without issues. Endlessly throws a few twists in the way like the end of the paranormals, a new IPCA boss, the impending war between the fae, and a curse.  Oh and Jack’s back which was awesome because I loved him!

I was really happy with the ending but a little sad also, it was bittersweet. I really think fans of this series will enjoy it!

I picked a scene that made me snort I was laughing so hard!

“Have you been reading his diary?” I asked. “Because I’ll bet he got really creative with the violence ideas.”

“No, I only ever read yours. But let me tell you, one more exclamation mark dotted with a heart while talking about how good a kisser Lend is and I was about ready to do myself in. You’re rather single-minded when it comes to adoring him.”

“True dat,” Arianna said, nodding.

“How come you can use ’true dat’ if I can’t?” I asked, rightfully outraged.

“Because I am dead, and none of the rules apply anymore.”

Lend ate his omlet, refusing to answer Jack’s questions about just how it was on a scale from cutting off limbs to just breaking his nose. I gave Jack full points for flavor but noted the texture was slightly off, exempting him from name-calling but not from dirty looks.

Arianna lounged against the counter, and when I finished first we debated the usage of “dude,” “true dat,” and my favorite, “for serious.”

“I kind of wish they’d shut up,” Jack said.

“Dude, true dat,” Lend answered.

Jack nodded solemnly. “For serious.”

Destined the conclusion to the Wings series was everything I hoped for and more! After Illusions which I liked but nothing really happened till the very end; Destined picks up and it’s non-stop action and danger. What I loved about this is that the humans get a chance to finally shine!  Not that I don’t love Laurel and Tam because I do but, I always thought Chelsea was a bright character that should have been used more and she finally gets her chance to be kick ass! Let me just say this I am and always have been team Tammani but, in Destined I found a new found respect and admiration in David his character I think is put through the wringer worse than any of them and you get to see him grow into a person I think you will all love by the end. There is a letter he writes……I won’t say where or when that literally tore me to shreds I couldn’t believe he had me crying like that.

The story itself was almost completely in Avalon which was awesome because I like the land that Aprilynne created there’s also more Camelot/Arthurian Legend in the story. Let’s face it y’all know I’m a crazy fan of that stuff (Hello Team Merlin) ;) oh and let me just clear this up quickly I didn’t hate Klea I understood her motives and yeah she may have been the bad guy but she had her reasons oh and Yuki might have been obnoxious but I liked her too!

I chose a passage that has David in it because I loved the meaning. It’s a symbol for much bigger things.

“Now David Lawson,” Jamison said, “Avalon needs your help. Not only are you human—with the ability to wield the sword--- but I can sense your bravery, your strength, and especially, your loyalty. I know what you have done for Laurel in your world; standing by her when it meant risking your life. Even entering Avalon today took great courage. I suspect you have much in common with that young man Arthur, and I believe it is your destiny to save us all.”

Chelsea was soaking up the scene with eager eyes.

Tammani looked horrified.

Laurel knew what Jamison was going to ask, and wanted to stop him, to tell David that he should refuse--- that he didn’t have to do this; that being around her had hurt him enough already. He didn’t need to be a soldier for Avalon, too.

“David, with the name of kings,” Jamison said formally, “it is time to discover if you are the hero Laurel has always thought you to be. Will you join us in defending Avalon?”
