Delia smiles at the shadow only she sees—

Something slams into her. The lyra whirls like a half-dollar spinning on its edge.

My mother is thrown backward.

And she falls.

Growing up in the Cinzio Traveling Players Company, Genevieve Flannery is accustomed to a life most teenagers could never imagine: daily workouts of extravagant acrobatics; an extended family of clowns; wild animals for pets; and her mother, Delia, whose mind has always been tortured by visions—but whose love Geni never questions. In a world of performers who astonish and amaze on a daily basis, Delia’s ghostly hallucinations never seemed all that strange . . . until the evening Geni and her mother are performing an aerial routine they’ve done hundreds of times, and Delia falls to her death.

That night, a dark curtain in Geni’s life opens. Everything has changed.

Still reeling from the tragedy, the Cinzio Traveling Players are also adjusting to the circus’s new owner: a generous, mysterious man whose connection to the circus—Geni suspects—has a dark and dangerous history. And suddenly Geni is stumbling into a new reality of her own, her life interrupted daily by the terrors only Delia used to be able to see.

As the visions around her grow stronger, Geni isn’t sure who she can trust. Even worse, she’s starting to question whether she can trust her own mind.

Now on to the playlist!

Book Playlist:

I always bite my lip when this blog topic is offeredthis’ll prove to you what a total nerd I am. But before I share my playlist, I must tender my own defense: first, I don’t have to commute to the office so very little time is spent in my car, unless commuting involves walking to and from the shower and the closet that houses my Superman T-shirt collection and the coffee pot; second, at the gym, I’m too busy talking to my buddies to listen to music (yes, I’m one of THOSE people who talks at the gymcome on, where else do I have human contact, except with my doctor who is always telling me Im fine and “no, you don’t have a tiny alien living in your head causing those headaches you should just go for a walk”?); and lastly, when I’m writing, I cannot listen to any music with lyrics because then I will sing along, and that is the opposite of good. Adele I am not. As such, forgive meI don’t typically listen to pop music. (*ducks as people throw mushy tomatoes*)

Sure, if I’m in a bookstore or coffee shop and something catchy is playing, I’ll say to my very hip daughter, “Hey, Very Hip Daughter, what is that music and where can I get more of it?” But the honest truth? Movie scores are my one true musical love.

It’s fair to say that a hundred percent of the playlist music I listen to while writing is from movies, and nearly all of that is from the instrumental score. There are exceptionsI’ve been turned on to lots of bands through movie soundtracks. Imogen Heap, Muse, Woodkid, Ingrid Michaelson, Florence + The Machine, Iron & Wine, Ellie Goulding, Sia. (OH, I love Sia.) Pretty much all the music I “discover” wiggles its way into my iTunes account because it was played as accompaniment to a story unfolding on the screen. Because if you haven’t figured it outI LOVE MOVIES.

So, in the spirit of introducing YOU, the agile-minded reader, to Really Fantastic Movie Scores, here are my top ten favorites that I listen to on repeat. Scores are terrifically helpful when I need to get into the headspace to write, and this has been especially true with SLEIGHT:

1.        MAN OF STEEL, Hans Zimmer
2.      TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, Alexandre Desplat
3.      ZERO DARK THIRTY, Alexandre Desplat
4.     KING ARTHUR, Daniel Pemberton
5.     WONDER WOMAN, Rupert Gregson-Williams
6.     WELCOME TO THE PUNCH, Harry Escott
7.       SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN, James Newton Howard
8.      ROMEO & JULIET, Abel Korzeniowski
9.     THE LONE RANGER, Hans Zimmer
10.  FURY, Steven Price
11.     13 HOURS, Lorne Balfe

Oops. That was elevenin all seriousness, I could’ve given you a hundred amazing scores. Picking my favorites is near impossible because I love multiple works from all these composersits like picking my favorite child (my favorite child is the catdont tell the human kids). I can say with confidence that MAN OF STEEL is my absolute favorite, with WONDER WOMAN a close second. (I sense a theme here ) When friends need good writing music, they message me for recommendations because they know I’m over-the-moon nuts about movie music. I’m always on the lookout for inspiring, powerful instrumentals that can serve as the backdrop for whatever book I’m working on. Sure, the movie is great, but what about that soundtrack?

Next time you’re at the moviesother than saving me a seat so we can eat popcorn together but you are NOT allowed to talk to me during the film or I will dump the popcorn over your headclose your eyes and listen to the magic going on behind the pictures. Pretty awesome, yeah? Music is so powerful, in whatever shape it takes. It really is the soundtrack to this mortal life!
