“Surely, you must be from the southern lands. Just look at your attire,” the frog continued, lifting a small hand towards me.

I couldn’t help but notice the way his knobby little fingers were webbed together. I slid my gaze down to my white knotted top and jeans shorts before lifting my eyes back to the frog.

The creature’s eyes remained transfixed on me, as if I was the one from a foreign country.

            “These are my clothes.”

            “As I can see. Such attire must come from the Southern Lands,” it replied before adding, “where the peasants get their clothes from the rag bin.” 

Now, this animal was just offensive. 

            “You’re a frog,” I retorted, as though that should have been enough to refute his insult. This was going on record as one of the most bizarre dreams I’d ever had in my life. As a child, I’d always dreamed of possessing the ability to speak with animals, just as nearly every fairytale princess could. But this…this was not what I imagined—a creature of such small, slimy stature, commenting so rudely on my attire.

            “For now,” he responded. “And you’re just a girl who nearly drowned me.” 

            “I thought the water would help you,” I replied quickly, biting the inside of my cheek. 

The frog crossed its arms against its chest. It was weird that he not only talked like a human, but acted like one, too. 

            “As I said, I nearly drowned thanks to you,” the frog scowled. 

            “Well, I’m sorry,” I quipped, rolling my eyes. I couldn’t believe I was having this conversation, with a frog, nonetheless. 

            “Perhaps we could start with introductions,” the frog continued, rising to his feet. Unable to hide my astonishment at his ability to stand on two legs, I just stared. 

            “Uhh…” 

“Is that your way of agreeing?” he asked. “Or is that your name?” 

“I’m not giving you my name,” I replied, shaking my head. 

            “And why not?” 

            “It doesn’t really matter, does it?” I looked down at him, incredulous. 

The frog frowned at my hesitation. “Have you forgotten it?”

“No, I haven’t forgotten it,” I snapped, shaking my head.

Excerpt:

Her knuckles whitened as she clenched her fist. “I’m going to the campo soon, but can I meet you in the embalse in the afternoon?” She looked around, her gaze furtive, before focusing back on me. “I really need to speak to you. Alone.”

I inched closer while she kept retreating, until her back was against the wall bordering the road down to Font Vella. “Alone? With me? Here?”

If someone asked what I was doing in that moment, I, who never ran out of words, wouldn’t be able to answer. I had no idea what I was doing. I shouldn’t get too deeply involved with people from the village. It was bad enough that I’d let Abuela know the truth, which could change God knows what in the future. I couldn’t take another risk by hitting on Celestina, Abuela’s future best friend.

But it was too hard to hold back.

I grew up seeing and hearing about Celestina. She was like a mysterious myth to me. I met my first girlfriend when I was seventeen. However, no matter how many relationships I ended up in later, Celestina had always been at the back of my mind. This mystery was now in front of me, within my reach. Without thinking, I grasped a handful of curls, right at her cheek. She let out an audible gasp as I let the strands slip through my fingers, the action soft and addictive.

“Leonardo, are you here?”

I snapped straight, the spell broken by Abuela’s gentle voice.

Celestina lay both hands on my chest and pushed me. “I’ll see you in the embalse!” she said and ran off, leaving me wondering what time we were to meet at.

“Was that Celestina?” Abuela asked.

I shoved my hands into my jacket pockets. “Yep.”

“When did the two of you become close?”

“We’re not.”

“Uh, huh.” She gave me an I-don’t-believe-you look, and I knew I needed to confess.

“It’s nothing. I’m here looking for a clue how to get back to the future, and she asked to meet me in the embalse.”

She glanced in the direction Celestina took. “Why?”

“I don’t know. She said she wanted to speak to me. Alone.”

Abuela laughed a little.

“¿Qué?” I asked, feeling defensive all of a sudden.

A day in your writing life.

I try to get up at 5 AM. I take a shower, get dressed for work, then go and sit in front of my computer. I tell the Google to play whatever I feel like that morning, and I start typing words. Hopefully good words, but that is not always the case.

If it’s cold outside I open a window. The cold air wakes me up. I’ve never measured, but I bet I get more writing done when it’s cold. If it’s hot or raining I leave the window closed.

I don’t use a laptop. I can’t really stand to write on a laptop. I wish I did, but I am a creature of habit, and I’ve been on a desktop since the start.

I write from 5:30 until about 7. Then I’m out the door and to my job as a physical therapist. I work until 5:30, come home, and maybe I write some more, but usually I’m beat. To boot, I have a wife, three kids, and a very cute dog that need my attention in the evening.

I do this five days a week. On Saturdays, I usually sleep in until six, get up and make coffee, and write until my brain hurts. That’s usually noonish. That is if I don’t have family stuff, then I do that.

If I can, I will write in the afternoon a little. Maybe until five, then I’m done. I know from experience that it’s a losing proposition to try and write past five. Sundays, I just do what I can, when I can. But some Sundays I take completely off.

I enjoy writing. I told someone the other day that I don’t play golf. I don’t fish much. I write. It’s more than a hobby, though. I love my day job, but I’d be a liar if I said I wouldn’t want to be a full-time writer if the opportunity presented itself. To that end, I’m going to need everyone that reads this to buy two copies of KILL CALL. Three copies would be acceptable as well.

The words come slow some days and slower on other days. I do not write fast. Maybe that’s why I’m a fifty-year-old debut author, but mostly, I think it was meant to happen this way. I am very happy that people are reading my stuff in larger volumes than ever before. The fact that most seem to be enjoying it only makes it more rewarding.

FIRE

Salvatore trembled.

In moments, a sea of glowing red eyes lit up the dark. All the animals that chose to hide rather than flee were now in Malsumi’s clutches.

“We need to go now,” Salvatore cried.

They turned and bolted for their mounts, but froze after only two steps.

Foggy tentacles had constricted around their kiraka who now writhed in vain.
The beasts squawked and flailed about, dirt swelling into the air. In seconds, the markings
of Malsumi covered their faces.

Salvatore’s mouth went dry and an icy dagger plunged into his gut.

The black mist withdrew, and the corrupted kiraka stalked toward them, ready
to pounce.

Heat touched his shoulder, and he glanced at Giulia who had summoned a fireball.

Six more corrupted creatures—three foxes, a beat, a deer, and a panther entered
the clearing behind them.

They closed in like a noose.

Salvatore spent so much time believing he might die in the Gauntlet. He never thought his demise would come sooner. If only he could see his mother and Liseli one more time.
At least he wasn’t alone. Salvatore and Giulia had done nearly everything together for over
