Blog Tour-JULIA DEFIANT by Catherine Egan An Interview & Giveaway!

Hey everyone! I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for JULIA DEFIANT by Catherine Egan!

I have an interview to share with you today! And make sure to enter the giveaway below!

Haven't heard of JULIA DEFIANT? Check it out!

Title: JULIA DEFIANT (Witch's Child #2)
Author: Catharine Egan
Pub. Date: June 13, 2017
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers
Pages: 464
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Find it: Amazon, B&N. TBD, iBooks, Goodreads
Fans of The Rose Society, Graceling, and Six of Crows will thrill to the masterful world-building and fiercely flawed heroine in this heart-pounding follow-up to Julia Vanishes, book two in the Witch's Child trilogy.

Adventure, murder, romance, intrigue, and betrayal with a 16-year-old heroine that is both fierce and flawed at the same time. Hypable.com

Julia and a mismatched band of revolutionaries, scholars, and thieves have crossed the world searching for a witch. But for all the miles traveled, they are no closer to finding Ko Dan. No closer to undoing the terrible spell he cast that bound an ancient magic to the life of a small child. Casimir wants that magic will happily kill Theo to extract it and every moment they hunt for Ko Dan, Casimir's assassins are hunting them.

Julia can deal with danger. The thing that truly scares her lies within. Her strange ability to vanish to a place just out of sight has grown: she can now disappear so completely that it's like stepping into another world. It’s a fiery, hellish world, filled with creatures who seem to recognize her and count her as one of their own.

So . . . is Julia a girl with a monster lurking inside her? Or a monster wearing the disguise of a girl?

If she can use her monstrous power to save Theo, does it matter?

In this riveting second book in the Witch s Child trilogy, Catherine Egan goes deep within the heart of a fierce, defiant girl trying to discover not just who but what she truly is.

Julia’s a wonderful, fully realized heroine. . . . For those readers waiting for the sequel to Marie Lu’s The Rose Society, a well-realized page-turner in the same vein. Kirkus

Now on to the interview!
Hey Catherine!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! JULIA DEFIANT was freaking AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

Thank you so much! I’m thrilled that you liked it – and I can’t wait for people to read it either J.

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the events leading up to JULIA DEFIANT and the characters?

Julia is a 16-year-old thief and spy with the ability to step out of sight while in plain view, in a city where all forms of magic are illegal. When the series opens, Julia is posing as a maid in the household of the wealthy and eccentric Mrs. Och and reporting to a mysterious client. The more Julia finds out about both the client and the people she’s spying on, the more she suspects she’s on the wrong side, and that she is getting tangled up in a conflict far bigger and more dangerous than she’d imagined. Backed into a corner, she does something terrible to save her own skin – and discovers that her ability to vanish goes much deeper than she’d realized.

Book 2 is about trust and atonement (and monsters, magic, and revolution!) and brings the question of why (and how far) Julia can vanish to the forefront. She’s sworn to protect the little boy she almost got killed in the first book, and to do so she has to work with the people she betrayed, as well as her ex-lover, who betrayed her.
All the relationships from the first book get pushed a little farther here – Julia’s brother Dek finds real happiness in another country, while she only longs to go home; her ex, Wyn, wants her back; she doesn’t like or trust her boss, Mrs. Och, who demands obedience; she’s struggling with her guilt while forging authentic bonds with Bianka and Frederick, the people most betrayed by her actions in JULIA VANISHES.

So do we have a title for book 3 yet?

Not official yet! So I’ll keep the current title sekrit ;).

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Hah! No. (But would it be safe to admit it if the answer was yes?)

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Pia, the creepy super-powered woman contracted to Casimir, who is hunting Julia & co. across the world. The Pia-Julia bond took over a little more with each book. I just couldn’t get enough of her. I also loved writing the stumbling friendship between Bianka and Julia – it’s a situation where a friendship should be impossible, and yet both of their instincts push them to trust one another.

I don’t think I can point to a least favorite character. If I don’t care about a character, they don’t end up in the book.

What is your favorite passage/scene in JULIA DEFIANT?

Tough choice between two scenes. I loved writing the closing scene in the book and I’m still very happy with it. A close second would be Julia & co. visiting the Imperial Library, which is carved into a mountainside, and her encounter with a super creepy witch I just adore.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Yongguo (where JULIA DEFIANT is set) takes a lot of elements from Qing dynasty
China. This isn’t a historical fantasy, it is straight-up fantasy, but even so I did a lot more reading about furniture and the layout of traditional courtyard houses than I’d expected.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Jonathan Strange.

What inspired you to write YA?

I think it was something that was trying to push its way into my writing for a long time before I became aware of it. I spent my twenties writing short fiction and one terrible novel, ostensibly for adults, but the experiences and perspectives of teenaged girls were always in some way central to whatever story I was working on.
I don’t know – I think about this a lot, because lately I’ve been having all these ideas for books that would center on adults or younger kids, and so maybe I’ll find I’m branching out. I don’t think I’ll ever be done with YA though. My own teenage years were very intense and fraught and I think there’s just something there – the desperation and terror and joy of it, the emerging-from-childhood-and-perching-on-the-edge-of-the-rest-of-your-life thing – that I’ll never get tired of writing about.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

China Mieville’s THREE MOMENTS OF AN EXPLOSION. I am dying to read everything in my TBR pile, but Kiersten White’s AND I RISE and Cindy Pon’s WANT will jump the line the instant they’re released.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Slayer ;)

Twitter or Facebook?

Both, in small doses.

Favorite Superhero?

Buffy.

Favorite TV show?

Right now – totally hooked on The Americans.

Sweet or Salty?

Salty.

Any Phobias?

Flying.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

My kids and I have been singing the Hamilton soundtrack for a year straight, basically. Also rediscovering Veda Hille (Vancouver-based singer songwriter) - listening to her album Spine and old fave One Hot Summer while I clean.

2017 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

The Last Jedi! And I hope Blade Runner 2049 is good.

Thanks so much Catherine for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read JULIA DEFIANT!

THANK YOU!!!

Companion novel to Burning.

Prep school gets a twist of supernatural suspense in this commercial YA thriller.

Charlotte has always been content in the shadow of her two best friends at the prestigious Underhill Preparatory Institute. Ariel is daring and mysterious. Devon is beautiful and brilliant. Although Charlotte never lived up to the standards of the school—or her demanding mother—her two best friends became the family she never had. When Ariel and Devon suddenly commit suicide within a month of each other, Charlotte refuses to accept it as a coincidence. But as the clues point to a dangerous secret about Underhill Prep, Charlotte is suddenly in over her head. There’s a reason the students of Underhill are so exceptional, and the people responsible are willing to kill to protect the truth…

Suspenseful and scintillating, with hints of the supernatural, this fast-paced thriller will keep readers hooked.

Now on to the excerpt!

Chapter Six

Ariel and I met Jack on the same day. In the same class period. At the same moment. He walked into our homeroom, and we looked up and—boom—Jack was in our lives.
He was a transfer student from the city. Started at Weston our junior year. I had the new-student thing down to a science by then, and I knew the drill. No sudden movements or loud noises. No unnecessary eye contact. You don’t want to spook the animals.
Jack . . . did not follow those guidelines. His first week at Weston, he signed up to do a comedy set at the under-eighteen club in town. Every single student at our school showed up to see him. We figured he was a theater kid, that he must be some sort of comic genius to take such a big risk.
He was not a comic genius. In fact, he stank. It was like watching an oddly charming train wreck. He grinned like an idiot when we all finally booed him off the stage. He bowed and doffed an invisible hat. Everyone at Weston fell in love with him at the same second.
If Jack were a dog, he’d be a golden retriever. If he were an inanimate object, he’d be something bouncy and determined, like a tennis ball. He tries too hard and does too much and doesn’t care about what anyone thinks, except that of course he cares about what everyone thinks.
“Dibs,” Ariel whispered to me that night, while we were watching him bomb onstage. It took me too long to realize what she’d meant. Jack wasn’t her type. She liked dark, brooding boys with leather jackets and bad attitudes. She liked tattoos and no futures and older, bordering on inappropriate. She didn’t date goofy high school guys. She didn’t appreciate determination and charm.
But Jack was different. Jack was worth it.
I felt something shift then that I couldn’t quite name. The sudden emptiness that comes with losing something you hadn’t realized you wanted.
***
You’re wondering if I slept with Ariel’s boyfriend.
If that was why we’d fought. Why she killed herself.
You think the guilt is driving me crazy. You think that’s why I’m so messed up.
Well. I didn’t.

What I did was so much worse.

I have an interview with Sara to share with you today! And make sure to enter the giveaway below!

Haven't heard of DARK BREAKS THE DAWN? Check it out!

Title: DARK BREAKS THE DAWN
Author: Sara B. Larson
Pub. Date: May 30, 2017

Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

On her eighteenth birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.

But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn into the throne much sooner than she expected.

In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price.

In the first book of a remarkable duology, Sara B. Larson sets the stage for her reimagining of Swan Lake -- a lush romance packed with betrayal, intrigue, magic, and adventure.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Sara! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! I freaking loved the DARK BREAKS THE DAWN and I can’t wait for everyone to read it! And I am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

Thank you so much! I’m so thrilled you loved it and I’m so happy to be back!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the DARK BREAKS THE DAWN and the characters?

DARK BREAKS THE DAWN is a fantasy reimagining of Swan Lake. There are so many complex characters in this story that I loved getting to delve into and write about—including Evelayn, the Princess of Eadrolan (the Light Kingdom), Ceren, her best friend who is more like a sister to her, Tanvir who is the new High Lord of the Delsachts, and Lorcan, the Prince of Dorjhalon (the Dark Kingdom). All of these characters have strengths and weaknesses, many of which you’ll see in DBTD, but that will be revealed even more (and sometimes in VERY shocking ways) in the sequel, BRIGHT BURNS THE NIGHT.

How was writing it compared to the Defy series? Is it different writing a second series?

Writing this duology has been a very different experience from writing the DEFY series. I was able to draft the three books of the DEFY trilogy very quickly, often in huge spurts of inspiration that lasted for hours. With DARK BREAKS THE DAWN and the sequel, I was dealing with quite a lot in my personal life, and found it much harder for that same creative passion to overtake me. This meant that both books took longer to draft than I had been used to, but it was a great learning experience for me—that I can still write and create, even under less than ideal circumstances.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Not really. I think as authors, we are constantly observing and absorbing, but I have yet to consciously model a character after someone in my real life. But perhaps “stealing” bits and pieces here and there, yes. I think we all do that.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Besides Evelayn, my main character, I think my favorite was Lorcan. He is so complex and has such a difficult life. He demanded much more attention than I’d first anticipated giving him and actually threw me for some major loops in this book and the sequel. While it can be terrifying as an author to give a character “his head” so to speak, it is also exhilarating, and I can’t wait for everyone to get to know him.

What is your favorite passage/scene in DARK BREAKS THE DAWN?

I can never pick just one – there are so many! And some are very spoilery. But one of my favorite scenes to write takes place in a cave, when Evelayn risks her life to go seeking something to help her stop the war.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I did all sorts of different research, but one of my favorite bits of “research” I did was when I was lying in a hotel room, trying to rest while my kids watched Wild Kratts on PBS. It was an episode about spiders, and in particular how strong spider silk is. That episode sparked an idea that became an integral part of the plot in DBTD! You never know where inspiration (and research) can take place!

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

I’m terrible at picking just one…but some of my recent favorites are Rhysand (ACOMAF), and Anton (BURNING GLASS). Very different men, but both very swoon-worthy!

What inspired you to write YA?

I’ve always naturally gravitated to YA, as a reader and a writer. I love the urgency at this time in a person’s life, when characters are experiencing so much for the first time—love, death, independence—and when they are figuring out who they really are and want to be.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

My TBR is a mile high! As soon as I finish editing BRIGHT BURNS THE NIGHT, I am currently dying to read FLAME IN THE MIST, THE STAR TOUCHED QUEEN, A COURT OF WINGS AND RUIN, and my ARC of CRYSTAL BLADE!

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

I always end up in Gryffindor when I take the tests.

Twitter or Facebook?

Instagram. J I love pictures.

Favorite Superhero?

My mom.

Favorite TV show?

I don’t have a TOP favorite, but I did just binge watch How I Met Your Mother and Heart of Dixie while I was on bedrest (I needed light, fun shows to keep my mind off of things) and thoroughly enjoyed both.

Sweet or Salty?

Sweet. Unless it’s chips with salsa and guacamole.

Any Phobias?

I can’t stand the sound of napkins tearing, so I hate using paper napkins.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Believer by Imagine Dragons is my workout jam right now, and HandClap by Fitz and the Tantrums

2017 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

SO many! Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Wonder Woman are at the top of the list! And of course THE LAST JEDI!!!

Thanks so much Sara for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read DARK BREAKS THE DAWN!

Thank YOU!
