Glory's mother will stop at nothing to keep her daughter from worldly temptations…

Glory Bishop lives her life in pieces. At work and with her friends, she reads novels, speaks her mind, and enjoys slow dances and stolen kisses with her boyfriend, JT. But at home, Glory follows strict rules and second-guesses every step. Though she dreams of going to college and living like a normal teenage girl, her abusive mother has other ideas.

When JT leaves to join the navy, Glory is left alone and heartsick. The preacher's son, Malcolm Porter, begins to shower her with lavish gifts, and her mother pushes Glory to accept his advances. Glory is torn between waiting for true love with JT or giving in to the overzealous Malcolm.

When a stranger attacks Glory on the street, Malcolm steps in to rescue her, and her interest in him deepens. But the closer she gets to him, the more controlling he becomes. Glory must eventually decide whether to rely on others or to be her own savior.

Praise for GLORY BISHOP

"Deborah King has written a compelling, thought-provoking novel that engages readers and made me wish the story would never end." -Chicago Writer's Association Windy City Reviews

"If you enjoy complex characters, you'll love this book. From a zealous and abusive mother to a free-spirited best friend much older than Glory, the cast is as engrossing as Glory herself. Deborah King maintains complete control of the narrative, manipulating perception of the characters even as their actions go in other directions. In some ways, you may even find yourself sympathizing with the violent boyfriend.  Deborah King wields the pen in such a way as to grab you by the wrist and pull you along like you're best friends. Glory Bishop is Chicago's answer to Judy Blume!" ---JORDAN EHMANN  - Indies today

"Glory Bishop is an enthralling novel, sad, yet hopeful, written beautifully and masterfully in a way only a true storyteller can accomplish. The characters are complex, and unravelling their motivations, desires, strengths, and weaknesses, will keep readers thinking about this novel long after the last page." ----USA Today bestselling author Kelly Stone Gamble

Glory Bishop is timely and timeless. This book should be required reading for every woman who thinks she must be obedient to be loved. Glory is a protagonist who has a lot going against her, but Ms. King makes her strong, and it is a delight to see where that strength takes her.--- Barbara Conrey USA Today Bestselling Author of Nowhere Near Goodbye

"From the powerful first scene of Glory Bishop to its emotional ending, I was all-in. Deborah L. King is a fresh and compelling voice in women's fiction."--- Jennifer Klepper, USA Today bestselling author of Unbroken Threads

Excerpt:

She was standing at a softly rumbling dryer, folding “mountain fresh” scented towels, when she heard the door opening behind her.

“Hello, Miss Glory.”

She continued folding, pretending not to hear.

“I said, hello, Miss Glory.”

She would not give that devil’s son the satisfaction of responding.

The door closed, and she hoped he’d gone, but then he was behind her… his arms around her waist… his lips touching her shoulder. “Remember the first time you let me kiss you? You said you’d be my wife.”

Glory shrugged off the kiss and tried to ignore him—tried not to notice his scent or relax in his arms. She tried not to respond to his voice… tried not to care.

His lips touched the back of her neck. “Remember the second time you let me kiss you? You said you’d be my girl.”

Glory deliberately brushed his kiss from her neck and moved to the washing machine, careful to keep her back to him.

“Oh… so it’s like that now, huh? No problem. I’ll just sit down and watch you work. I’ve got all night. And you know, I always did appreciate you from behind, too.”

Glory growled under her breath, taking her annoyance out on the wet towels she pulled from the washer. She heard him sigh loudly as he settled down on the old couch. She whispered a prayer for patience and strength.

“Know what?” he asked. “I feel like singing.”

Glory continued her work and tried to ignore him as he flubbed his way through “Ribbon in the Sky” and “Isn’t She Lovely,” but when he started singing “Brick House,” she threw down the towel she was folding and gripped the edge of the table.

“Josiah Jackson, you leave me alone. Right now!”

“Oh… so you’re talking to me now, huh? I win big. I get to hear your pretty voice and look at your fine a—”

“No!” Glory turned to face him, arms folded, seething, channeling every bit of hurt and anger into a glare that she wished would burn him to cinders. “No. I’m not talking to you. I’m asking the devil to leave me alone! I’m asking Satan himself to leave me alone and never speak to me again.”

“Well,” he said, standing and moving toward her. “Your prayer is gonna be answered. I’m leaving for the navy tomorrow.”

He smiled. He actually smiled. That no-good lying two-timing devil smiled his smug smile—that I’m the finest boy in the world, and I know you agree smile. That I win smile.

Glory hated that smile. And she loved that smile. And all she could do was squeeze her eyes shut to keep the tears from spilling out.

“How could you do that to me, JT?” she whispered. “How?”

“I’m sorry, Miss Glory.” He tried to take her hand, but she pushed him away. “I’m leaving in the morning and I need to make things right with you. Please, just listen to me. You don’t hafta talk to me. You don’t hafta forgive me. Just listen. Then if you still hate me, I swear I’ll never bother you again.”

Glory opened her eyes. The smug smile was gone—no mocking, no joking, only the slightest hint of a plea in his voice and in his eyes—the force of will that always made her trust him… or used to make her trust him.

Glory sat away from him on the couch, arms still folded, not looking at him. She listened to his tale of a weekend with his cousins and wine and reefa and the twenty-two-year-old next door and his not really remembering it until his aunt called his mother about a baby that looked like him. She tried to stay angry and to push him away when he knelt in front of her, begging forgiveness. She tried not to see the tears in his eyes.

Sometimes, even a doctor isn’t good enough for some parents.

Tradition or love? It’s an age-old question.

The hot love between Amir and Rory doesn’t cool down. Now she is forced to choose between acceptance in her community—and the parents she loves—or give up the erotically charged cinematic love story she never thought she could find.

What will Rory do?

Praise for THE WHITE COAT EFFECT

“This was a page turner. Not only does the story tickle your senses, but the characters are well developed and I felt I knew them intimately. Hot and interesting would be the best way to describe it. I'm not that familiar with the medical world but this makes me want to dig deeper! The White Coat Effect would make a great movie or TV show... I hope that happens! Amazon Review

"
Fantastic book ! It was truly a page turner . As an Operating Room Nurse myself for 20 years , I could totally relate to the medical student’s experience while being scrubbed in and working with other residents and attending Surgeons. This book had me laughing one minute and crying the next. “Amazon Review

Excerpt:

Excerpt from The White Coat Effect By L.B. Wells

I remember when I first truly fell in love with surgery. It coincided with my first true love for Amir Hadid, the man who changed my life.

* * *

The first two years of medical school had been primarily book learning. It was boring and seemed to involve tons of rote memorizing. Social life was a non-starter. I was horny and bored. My third year was also a colossal disappointment. Now I was entering the fourth year, rounding the corner of my first clinical year. Everything would change, I thought, as we engaged with real human patients. I stood in full uniform—scrubs, ponytail, clogs—ready to be thrown into the icy waters.

I had reported for duty at City Hospital in Westport without much instruction on what to expect. There were no smiles, no pleasantries. I was briefly introduced to my new surgical team, and I shook hands with Shay Meyer, the intense Israeli man who would be my chief resident for the month.

We headed toward the first patient’s room. Suddenly, a tall, dark figure in scrubs brushed past me. As our shoulders met, the tattered carpet generated a painful electric shock.

“Watch where you’re going!” I said.

“Everyone, listen up.” Shay, the chief resident, was now addressing us. “This is our fourth-year resident, Amir.”

“Oh shit,” I whispered, head down, my cheeks flushing with embarrassment at having rudely chastised an important superior.

I took the risk of looking at him. I had to look; we were being introduced. From behind the Clark Kent glasses, his eyes hit me with 360 joules of energy, the maximum setting on a defibrillator.

It was him, the handsome stranger I had seen in passing a few years prior and once, I confess, in my dreams. He stood well over six feet, with an imperious chest and broad shoulders filling out his short-sleeved green scrubs. His forearms flexed the muscles of a day laborer, his dark skin

gleaming.

All of his kinetic energy pulsed through light-brown eyes with a dramatic touch of emerald green. His face, deep in concentration, seemed to harbor a spiritual and probing intelligence.

Warning bells from my childhood were chiming insistently.

With a name like Amir and his coloring, he was almost certainly Arabic, not exactly the ethnic origin that my parents had in mind for a mate.

About L.B. Wells:

L.B. Wells is an avid writer, a decent tennis player and plays four instruments – piano, saxophone, clarinet and flute. She also composes music, speaks fluent Spanish and some Hebrew and loves to dance. By the way, she’s single. L.B.’s next book is the sequel to The White Coat Effect.

A remote island. Old secrets. And a cascade of unintended consequences.

Long ago, four clans from earth’s four corners were given magical abilities to help save humanity from oblivion. For generations, their descendants have lived in hidden communities and occasionally intermingled with regular humans—leading to whispers of unforeseen consequences.

Reviews:

"Jo Visuri does an outstanding job of juxtaposing fantasy and real-world concerns as the tension and action escalate [in The Undiscovered Descendants]...readers who want a story about new and evolving relationships, changing life purposes and perspectives, and threats to family and community connections will find The Undiscovered Descendants an excellent, satisfying story...highly recommended for teen fantasy readers who look for more than action and adventure in their stories." — D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW  Highly Recommended

"Secrets emerge as two young men try to find out if their classmate Elin is secretly a Dormant Descendant. Suspenseful and intriguing, The Undiscovered Descendants will have its readers halfway out of their seats. Brilliant characters, ancient Clans, special abilities, magic objects, and teenage relationships all wrapped into a fantastic adventure." — MANHATTAN BOOK REVIEW

"The Undiscovered Descendants is told from three different perspectives, and I love the seamless way that Elin's, Aeden's, and Tristan's tense stories weave together. The characters are fun and easy to both love and hate. Jo Visuri has introduced a unique world that combines modern teenagers and Scandinavian mythology in a delightfully refreshing way with a steady, action-fueled pace that makes it impossible to put down." — Amy, READERS' FAVORITE
★★★★★

"I loved every bit of the story right to the very last page. The descriptions of the scenes are so vivid that they seem like a 3D projection. Additionally, the thoughtfully constructed story covers an interesting range of themes: jealousy, ambition, infatuation, secret societies, friendship, family, and more." — Foluso, READERS' FAVORITE

Excerpt:

I’m thrilled to share an excerpt from The Undiscovered Descendants and give a brief glimpse of Auor Island and its inhabitants. The excerpt is from the middle of the book where Tristan and Elin have snuck into a secret tunnel at Aunt Adis’s house. Enjoy!

I had only the guidance of the little red light to try to find Tristan’s back and jump on it. Tristan was muttering frustrations under his breath over my lack of progress. Piggyback success was finally achieved after the third try. Tristan immediately took off, running as fast as he could.

For some reason, the way back in the pitch-dark passage seemed longer. Perhaps because I didn’t have the comforting blue light of the Trollkors ring, or maybe it was the anxiety over getting out before we were discovered. We both seemed to draw a sigh of relief as the metal staircase came into view…wait, I thought, why could I see the metal staircase?

There was faint light...and it was coming from somewhere above the staircase. Tristan quickly released me and I slid to the ground. He placed his hand on the metal railing of the staircase. He clearly felt a vibration. He put a single finger in front of his mouth, motioning me to stay quiet.

This was bad! There were only two ways to go—back where we’d come from or up the stairs. Neither were good options. Tristan seemed to be contemplating the same thing as he came close to me. He looked back toward the way we’d come and then up the stairs.

Suddenly he pulled on my hand, tugging me towards the staircase. However, instead of starting upward, he led me to the back of the last spiral. He motioned me to drop to the ground and crawl underneath the stairs. I did as he asked, crawling along the damp dirt floor until I reached the stone wall. Tristan was instantly beside me. I could feel the heat from his body as it hugged closer.

The shaking of the stairs intensified. I could hear a faint female voice above us. The voice grew louder as it approached. It sounded as if it was having a conversation with someone, but the responding voice was absent.

“Yes, of course, sir…I understand completely…I am on my way to check the register as we speak…No, sir. I have not seen any sign of the Resistance assembling on the island...No, sir. I took your call on SRT. I should hear you fine all the way...Yes, sir, that is correct. The Smá-menn have not developed unimpeded cell coverage yet.” The voice paused.

I recognized the figure of Ms. Haugen, the librarian and Tristan’s aunt, as she stood at the bottom of the staircase within reaching distance. She seemed to hesitate for a moment as if sensing our presence.

All she’d have to do was turn around. With her night vision, Tristan and I huddling underneath the stairs would be clear as day. I could tell that Tristan was holding his breath as well. Together we watched as she started to slowly turn her body towards us. We both shrank down, trying to get as small as possible.”
