Now on to the excerpt!

This is the opening scene of Spirit Woman from Axel’s (Jade’s love interest from Airwoman) point of view. Axel and Jade are taking refuge on the world of Premye.

Axel moved through the rainforest, brushing the tangled vines from his path. The Premyan healer, Namaje, had waved a hand in this general direction when he’d asked where Jade had gone. Finally, he heard a rustling sound.

He hesitated a moment, listening intently. Someone was moving about not far ahead. He ran a hand through his buzzed hair. Now that he’d found Jadeprobably Jadehe faced a moment of terrible indecision. He hovered, pulled between going to her and turning around to return to camp. The same feelings hed struggled with so many times since theyd returned to Premye after the confrontation with Zorman Gariq in the Ingresston Temple.

Part of him wanted to tell her. He should tell her. That part of him was almost as strong as the fear. The other part screamed warnings: she would never accept his terrible secret; he would lose her.

Axel swallowed. He turned back, then cursed himself for a coward.

Jade had faced her own uncle, even knowing that he would try to kill her. Now he couldn’t even tell her the truth. What kind of man did that make him? He couldn’t be worthy of her and keep the truth from her. He knew it.

Axel turned resolutely towards the sound again. He was sure it was Jade up ahead. The Premyans didn’t make that kind of noisethey were virtual ghosts as they moved around.

The sound of a knife splitting wood made the hairs on his arms stand upright. He forced his feet forwards and he pulled aside a dangling vine to see Jade standing in a patch of sunlight.

The light highlighted the soft curl of her hair as it fell around her chin, turning it from a chestnut brown into a golden color. He watched her in silence for a moment since she hadn’t seen him yet. Even from this distance, Axel noticed that every muscle in her body was tensed as though ready to spring into action. Her expression was clouded, her chin lifteddefiant, but not unafraid.

Axel followed the line of her gaze and saw her knife sticking out from the trunk of a tree. A brief smile touched his lipshed taught her how to do that.

“Target practice?” His voice sounded rough, as though it had been a long time since he’d spoken. Perhaps it had been. The Premyans weren’t a talkative bunch and while they stayed here, Jade was his main source of company. When she was absent, he felt uncomfortable, as though he didn’t belong.

Jade jumped at the sound of his voice, but when they made eye contact, she gave him the shy smile that always warmed him from the inside.

She flushed slightly as she reached for the bow slung at her back. “Archery. I was just warming up first.” Jade drew a bow from her quiver. There was still tension in her stance, and the shadow of a frown on her face as she stared at her makeshift target. Axel had the sudden feeling that he was alone in the rainforest, that the woman in front of him was aiming at a different target, far away from here. He felt a sudden frisson of fear. Jade was his anchor, his safe harbor.

Abruptly, he was a little boy again, alone in the world and desperate to belong.

“Make you feel better?” Axel asked, just to break the silence. Just to bring her back to him.

Jade didn’t move. Her gaze didn’t even flicker as she stared deep into the distance. The muscles of her shoulders were taut as she held the arrow, keeping maximum tension on the bowstring.

Axel took a shaky breath and took several quick steps forward, then put a hand on the back of her neck. “Jade, love,” he whispered.

In response, Jade swung around and aimed her arrow directly at his heart.

When I first met Jessa at my grandma’s funeral I hated her. Upon my first impression, I walked away thinking she was pretentious and rude. She wore a pink dress to a funeral. I mean who does that?
Then when I found out she was going to be my protector, I hated her even more. Jessa’s parents were high society and they were involved with my family in dealings with historical artifacts. They didn’t know my ancestors travelled through time, but they knew we were important historians and that we preserved facts. My grandma thought Jessa would be a good match to help me. I thought that she was senile and wrong and that it wasn’t going to work out, but I was wrong. We learned to like each other and then we became best friends. Turns out my grandma was right.

Jessa was my guide and I need more than just her friendship. While I travel through time she watches over me, keeping me safe. Jessa is also responsible for making sure my clothing is appropriate for the time frame, while also assisting me while I chronical what I have seen and what experiences I’ve gone through. She keeps notes on all of these things in her guide book, which basically makes her invaluable to me and to the work that I do. In order to travel through time you must have a guide you can trust, and I trust Jessa with my life.

The most important research was kept inside the blank pages of a book. Each mission yielded a new book. Once that book was full and our mission complete, it was sealed. I’m a librarian but not in the typical sense. I haven’t earned the proper diploma to get such a title. I, along with many others throughout the world, preserve the history of some of the most famous historical figures inside the blank pages of each book we are sent. The Librarians was founded by a famous scientist, Harold Lockhart. Lockhart wrote the formula for time travel in the only thing he had near him when it was fresh in his brain. That book wasn’t empty, it happened to be the history of none other than, Abraham Lincoln. After he wrote the formula, he was whisked away in time and came face to face with Lincoln himself. The talent to travel and record history was never his intention, but after he realized how wrong historians were about the president, he created the group of librarians. Lockhart put us in charge of libraries and their books. The sect of librarians were given their jobs and they went to work straight away.

I myself hope to achieve the goal of working in a library with the official title someday, which is what I’m studying in school. My intention is to host my own library and help archive important time periods through my research as well as artifacts, like my grandma did. Like all the women did who came before her.

All I know about my job before I travel is who I’m to research. Everything else is learned while I’m inside the book, or in other words, the past.

I’m forbidden to change history by becoming involved in the past or with my target. But I can become friendly with them and immerse myself in their world. It’s hard not to become part of it. While I’m there I am more than just a girl recording the true history. I become my character fully and truly; as if I really am who I say I am. I’ve been many different people, travelling five separate times into five people’s world. And each time I go, I’m nervous. It doesn’t take long to fill the pages the Historical Society of Libraries sends me. I’m currently one of the youngest on the East Coast. My job is taken extremely serious for I have wanted to do this for a long time. Now that it’s my job, I feel as if I am living the dream.

How could I not love it? I am a college student full time and on my off days I travel to the past. What is there not to like?

About Christy:

I am Southern California native, now living in New Jersey! How did that happen? I am married and have  two beautiful little girls who love to read just like Mommy. I have had a passion for books since I was a little girl and an imagination for just as long. I hope my books can inspire others to read and to write too.

In this epistolary middle-grade debut novel, a girl who's questioning her sexual orientation writes letters to her sister, who was sent away from their strict Catholic home after becoming pregnant.

Eleven-year-old Evie is heartbroken when her strict Catholic parents send her pregnant sister away to stay with a distant great-aunt. All Evie wants is for her older sister to come back. But when her parents forbid her to even speak to Cilla, she starts sending letters. Evie writes letters about her family, torn apart and hurting. She writes about her life, empty without Cilla. And she writes about the new girl in school, June, who becomes her friend, and then maybe more than a friend.

As she becomes better friends with June, Evie begins to question her sexual orientation. She can only imagine what might happen if her parents found out who she really is. She could really use some advice from Cilla. But Cilla isn't writing back.

Now on to the excerpt!

T H U R S D A Y ,   J U N E   2 8 T H

Dear Cilla,

Today the town pool was closed. Something about chlorine issues. When Katie and Maggie and I got there at nine, the water looked green. Not leprechaun green or grass green, but more like limeade green. Limeade green with a tint of yellow, which made me think that some little kids had probably peed in there.

So even if there hadn’t been a big CLOSeD sign on the fence, there was no way we were putting a toe in that water. (Especially Katie, who’d painted her toes sparkly purple. She was ridiculously proud of them and kept looking at her toes as we walked to the pool. She almost walked into a StOp sign. Maggie and I laughed so hard that we lost our balance and almost fell into the sign, too.)

We decided to go to the park instead. I haven’t been there in years. Remember how Mom and Dad always used to take us there after church when the weather was nice? First we’d have Mass, then we’d go to the doughnut social in the church hall. And then if we were really well behaved (which basically meant that you didn’t sing at the top of your lungs and I didn’t whine about how I was hungry the whole time), Mom and Dad would let us go to the park after.

You’d bring your tennis racket and hit the ball with Dad (until he convinced you to stop and throw a Frisbee around instead) and I’d go on the playground while Mom sat on the bench and watched me.
Then you’d get sick of Dad and we’d go down the twin slides at the same time, over and over again. You always reached the bottom first.

You always did everything first.

At least Mom and Dad never brought us to the park on the really hot days. That was today. It was ninety degrees by breakfast. The weather guy on TV called it a “scorcher” and said you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. Which, yeah, maybe you could do, but who would seriously want to eat that egg? Mmmm, I just love gravel omelets.

The pool would have been way better, but at least we put our blanket in the shade. Katie ran home (and came back cov- ered in sweat) to get one. She also brought a cooler full of waters, watermelon, chocolate brownies, and Jolly Ranchers (which started to melt in about five seconds). Then Katie and Maggie stripped down to their bathing suits and started talk- ing about Joey Witter, who was playing catch with Vivek Patel on the other side of the park.

They’ve decided that Joey is their newest crush and I’ve been pretending to agree with them, even though he’s al- ways mean to me. He made fun of me all last year because I got 100% on every spelling quiz. I know you said that means he likes me, but I think you’re wrong. I think he’s just mean. He talks to the lunch ladies more than he talks to me.

Swooning about Joey was really boring. Boring and hot. But even though I was sweating, I still wanted to go on the playground. It was in the sun, but there were still kids all over it, screeching and sliding and throwing sand. I didn’t say any- thing to Maggie and Katie, though, because we’re in seventh grade now. (Okay, almost in seventh grade.) We’re too old for the playground.

That’s what I’m supposed to think. But I really wanted to go on the tire swing, even though it was so hot, it would prob- ably burn lines into my butt.

When I looked over, there was another girl on the tire swing already—and she looked around our age! She had dark skin and dark curly hair pulled back in a bright green head- band. She was swinging slowly, and since she was the only one on the swing, it was tilting to one side. She grabbed on to a chain with one hand and held a book in the other.

Then Maggie poked me in the shoulder and asked me something about the Fourth of July celebration next week. I didn’t really hear what she said, because I was too busy try- ing to see what the girl was reading. Even though seeing the title from our blanket would be pretty much impossible, since the tire swing was all the way across the park.

So Maggie poked me again. Then Katie poked me, too, which totally tickled. Which meant we of course ended up in a tickle fight like we were six years old.

When I looked up again, the girl was gone.

I don’t know why I remembered all that—maybe because it made me remember us on the playground, before every- thing changed. Maybe because it made me want to go back there.

Maybe because I was a little jealous of that girl, how she looked like she had nothing to worry about at all.

I bet she never had a sister get sent away.

Love,
Evie

P. S . I miss you.

About Jen:
Jen Petro- Roy was born, raised, and still lives in Massachusetts, even though she rejects the idea that snow and cold are ever a good thing. She started writing in third grade, when her classroom performed a play she had written. It was about a witch and a kidnapped girl and a brave crew of adventurers who set out to save the day. As a kid, numerous pictures of Jen often featured Baby-Sitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins books clutched in her hand, so it was just a matter of time until she started writing her own books for children.
In the past, Jen has worked as a teacher and a teen and children’s librarian. She loves running, board games, trivia, and swimming, and has a mild obsession with the television show Jeopardy! P.S. I Miss You is her debut novel.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heros will fall, and hearts will be broken.

Now on to my review

Well I’ve got no words for the awesomeness that was Obsidio! But f*** this was amazing!!!

I won't be able to talk about what I want to without spoiling everything about Obsidio. It's funny when I first read Illuminae I liked it I just wasn't obsessed with it like so many others but, after I had put it down I started to appreciate the book for what it was, and that was an awesome sci-fi book. Then I read Gemina and I fell in love! I already liked Kady and Ezra but meeting Hanna and Nik (and Ella) solidified my love for this series! Normally I'm not one who likes it when a book series jumps POV's either but the way they incorporated Kady and Ezra and even AIDAN into book 2 was bloody brilliant! And that's what they did in Obsidio as well! We get to meet Asha (Kady's cousin) and Rhys who are completely new characters with their own personalities that you get to know but, your old faves are back as well and the way they all come together to destroy BeiTech is awesome, heart wrenching, and bittersweet. I'm not going to tell you all how this ends or even spoil any of the story just know that it rocks in the best possible way and get this when it comes out on March 13th! You're going to want to drop everything and read this one!

Go see Amie & Jay on Tour! These two are awesome and you won't regret meeting them!

The People of Ell Aye

Mayfly is set in the land of Ell Aye, a once-mighty city now in ruins. The old divisions of the past are gone, and in their place new peoples have emerged, each with their own origins and unique cultures.

The Angelenos
The dominant people of Ell Aye, they are a largely peaceful female-led society who live primarily in the hills. They are made of four interrelated peoples:

The Holy Wood
The oldest Angeleno settlement, on the shores of the Lake of the Holy Wood and the old Holy Wood sign.

The Malibu
The farthest west of the Angelenos, who live in the mountains next to the ocean of Malibu.

The Downtown
The Downtown guard the former towers of Ell Aye as sacred ground and live in a giant stadium in a ravine.

The San Fernandos
The San Fernandos live in the great valley north of the Holy Wood and frequently compete with the Holy Wood for scarce resources.

The Last Lifers
A feral band of Children who’ve gone mad in anticipation of their early deaths; they live throughout Ell Aye in violence and chaos because they fear no consequences.

The Palos (The Biters)
A cannibal society from the smoking Palos Verdes peninsula, they are Ell Aye’s most feared enemy. They are intelligent, vicious, and well armed.

The Ice Cream Men
A wandering tribe of traders who travel on three-wheeled ice cream carts, the Ice Cream Men know all the peoples in Ell Aye.

The Kingdom
A mighty civilization built by former gang members, the Kingdom occupies a huge castle fortress in Orange County, the OC.
