A GOD OF WAR SEEKING RESTORATION.

AN UNWILLING SACRIFICIAL BRIDE.

BETRAYAL THAT COULD DESTROY THEM BOTH.

“Every fiber of my being is woven from the rage of mortals.”

Theodric, the young God of War, has a talent for inciting conflict and bloodshed. After being stripped of his powers by his older brother, King of Gods, he sets out to instigate a mortal war to prove himself worthy of being restored to power.

“I loved Kisk once; it was my home… But that was before. This is now.”

Sixteen-year-old Cassia, like many in the modern era, believes gods and goddesses to be just a myth. Enemy to her country and an orphan of the war, she has no time for fairy tales. That’s until religious zealots from Theo’s sect offer her up as a sacrifice.

Can Cassia and Theo end the mortal war and return balance to the earth and heavens? Or, will their game of fate lead down a path of destruction, betrayal, and romance neither of them saw coming?

Now on to the interview!

Hi Amber! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books! FRAGILE CHAOS sounds absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about FRAGILE CHAOS and the characters?

Fragile Chaos is set in modern times in the fictional world with a new pantheon of gods. Theodric, the God of War, is trying to earn his power back by proving he can wage a war. Cassia, a 16-year-old sister of a traitor, is sent against her will as a sacrifice to Theo to end the war on their island. Both Cassia and Theo have their own motives and reasons to lie.

Is this a standalone or a series? And if it’s a series do you have a title for book 2 yet? And if it’s a standalone what are you working on next?

Fragile Chaos is a standalone. I just finished revising a manuscript featuring the Sandman. It’s been so fun to work on!

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Nope! I don’t use people I know in my books because it might influence things that need to happen to the characters.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Leander was hands down my favorite. I think Astra was my least favorite to write, but I liked writing them all in their own way.

What is your favorite passage/scene in FRAGILE CHAOS?

Oooh, it’s a spoiler-y passage/scene so I can’t answer this one! My second favorite is the scene leading up to the first kiss.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I researched different pantheons of gods before deciding to create my own. Antimatter was another thing I read up on. A friend of mine is a scientist, and she helped out with that one.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Arin from The Winner’s Trilogy. *swoon*

What inspired you to write YA?

The teen years are so pivotal, and reading really helped me through mine.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I’m currently reading When Planets Fall by Abby J. Reed. It’s great!! Next up is Caraval.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

I’m a Hufflepuff!

Twitter or Facebook?

Twitter for bookish things, Facebook for keeping in touch with family while I move around every few years.

Favorite Superhero?

Loki! Does he count? If not, I’ll go with Thor. But, really—Loki.

Favorite TV show?

Game of Thrones

Sweet or Salty?

Sweet

Any Phobias?

Bugs!

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay

About The Book:

Title: CHASING EVELINE
Author: Leslie Hauser
Pub. Date: July 11, 2017
Publisher: Pen Name Publishing
Pages: 300
Formats: Paperback, eBook

Sixteen-year-old Ivy Higgins is the only student at Carmel Heights High School who listens to cassettes. And her binder is the only one decorated with album artwork by 80s band Chasing Eveline. Despite being broken-up since 1989, this rock band out of Ireland means everything to Ivy. They’re a reminder of her mom, who abandoned Ivy and her dad two years ago. Now the music of her mom’s favorite band is the only connection she has left.

Even though Ivy wavers between anger and a yearning to reconnect, she’s one-hundred percent certain she’s not ready to lose her mom forever. But the only surefire way to locate her would be at a Chasing Eveline concert. So with help from her lone friend Matt—an equally abandoned soul and indie music enthusiast—Ivy hatches a plan to reunite the band.

The road to Ireland won’t be easy, though. And not just because there is no road. Along the way they’ll have to win over their Lady Gaga-loving peers, tangle with some frisky meerkats, and oh yeah, somehow find and persuade the four members to play a reunion gig. It’s a near-impossible task, but Ivy has to try. If she can’t let go of the past, she’ll never be able to find joy in the present.

Excerpt:

They say music is the key to the soul. Or maybe it’s the heart. I can’t remember exactly what my mom said that day she danced into my room with a new record for me to hear. I was only in the fourth grade, but I became a believer. I remember so vividly how the drums rattled deep within my chest and the lyrics I didn’t even understand seemed to whisper secrets meant only for me. The song lingered inside me for days. My mom swooned and told me that’s why music must be shared.
So when I saw the desperate school blog post calling for a volunteer DJ at tonight’s Back to School Dance, I jumped at the chance. The music my friend Matt and I plan to throw into the mix is a giant master key. I just hope it will open the teenage hearts in this musty gym and linger inside them long after the last balloon deflates. This music is important to me.

I nudge Matt, whose face is glued to the computer screen at our DJ table. A vibrating speaker to our left thumps out music, so I yell into his ear, “Is the set list ready?”

He tilts his head toward me. “Geez, Ivy. I just plugged in the flash drive.”

“Okay, sorry.” I step away. He sweeps his blond hair out of his eyes and returns his focus to the computer.

I pace behind him, a nervous left followed by an excited right and back again. The musical brilliance of the greatest guitarist of all time will soon weave through these bodies and drift into every ear. My heart floats up with the blue and yellow balloons hovering like a latex fog.

My hand strums on my thigh while Matt continues to fuss with the computer. Near the gym entrance, Principal Henry stands with Narc 1 and Narc 2, and a wave of yawns travels across them. The newbie freshmen line the walls and cluster in groups. The scene resembles a casting call for an acne medication ad.

The dull atmosphere isn’t helped by the annoyingly synthetic pop noise blasting through the speakers. After I offered our free DJ services to Karen, the Dance Committee Chairperson, she gave us a mix of music tracks to play. She was grateful to have saved some precious dollars for this year’s prom, but

I’m not sure she trusted two no-name juniors to get the job done.

However, after listening to thirty minutes of her set list, I’m seriously questioning the cool factor of the popular crowd. Karen’s mix features some of the worst radio music of all time. Every song is a mere echo of the previous one—peppy beats and vacuous lyrics about hook-ups and partying. I can’t even tell if the voices belong to boys, girls, or machines.

I tap Matt’s shoulder. “Are you almost finished?” I nearly have to scream.

“Yeah. I’m just making sure we have the songs in the right order.” He turns around and leans toward me. “Ivy, you really want to do this?”

I smile at him and hope he doesn’t see all the tiny cracks waiting to splinter. “We’re just sharing some great music. It’ll be fine.”

The sides have been chosen and the battle lines drawn.

Echo awakened the Firebird. Now she is the only one with the power to face the darkness she unwittingly unleashed . . . right into the waiting hands of Tanith, the new Dragon Prince. Tanith has one goal in mind: destroy her enemies, raze their lands, and reign supreme in a new era where the Drakharin are almighty and the Avicen are nothing but a memory.

The war that has been brewing for centuries is finally imminent. But the scales are tipped. Echo might hold the power to face the darkness within the Dragon Prince, but she has far to go to master its overwhelming force. And now she’s plagued by uncertainty. With Caius no longer by her side, she doesn’t know if she can do it alone. Is she strong enough to save her home and the people she loves?

Whether Echo is ready to face this evil is not the question. The war has begun, and there is no looking back. There are only two outcomes possible: triumph or death.

Now on to the excerpt!

Echo stepped over broken glass and collapsed tables, making her way to the office where Perrin kept his account books.

The room itself was modest. Large, heavy tomes bound in unassuming brown leather lined the shelves, their spines embossed with golden dates spanning back to the late nineteenth century. The Agora had been around for a long time. When it was established, the island had been a Dutch colony by the name of New Amsterdam, and the market had weathered the years since. Perrin’s records were meticulously arranged in chronological order on shelves that covered every inch of wall space. The books’ bindings had been worn smooth by age and handling. The business had operated, like most Avicen enterprises, on a complicated bartering system. Echo’s involvement with Perrin had been relatively simple. He had requests. She fulfilled them, acquiring goods out in the human world that were difficult for an Avicen to come by, and in return, he kept her in a steady supply of shadow dust.

But she knew from watching him work in the shop that his other arrangements had not always been as simple. The shopkeeper had woven a complex web of favors and debts, and each of these books was a record of every transaction he had performed in the year stamped on its spine. The books had obviously been pulled off the shelves with frequency. There was a scant bit of dust on them from the months of neglect, but they still showed signs of once-regular usage. Echo had no doubt that Perrin remembered, with the aid of his detailed record keeping, every favor owed him by the Avicen—and occasional warlock—who passed through his shop. A less discerning eye might not have caught the slight aberration among the books, but Echo, who spent the vast majority of her life surrounded by books in various states of disrepair, noticed it.

A single ledger, almost identical to its neighbors. The year, written in faded golden lettering on its spine: 1961. Echo snatched at a fragment of memory: Perrin, listing the greatest baseball teams in the history of the sport during one of the slow days at his shop, when Echo had come around looking to stock up on shadow dust only to find herself roped into one of his diatribes on sports. She couldn’t remember most of what he had said, but she remembered the enthusiasm in his voice as he’d described the virtues of the 1961 Yankees: victors of that year’s World Series after defeating the Cincinnati Reds in five games; home to both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, who were famous for racing to beat Babe Ruth’s home run record. The memory would probably have remained buried deep in Echo’s subconscious if not for the condition of the ledger.

The spine was not cracked.

The leather showed signs of handling, particularly near the top where someone would have pressed their fingers to the book to pull it off the shelf. But unlike every other ledger in the office, it showed no sign of having been opened repeatedly. This book was not for reading. She rested her hand atop it and pulled.

The ledger did not slide off the shelf as it should have. Instead it angled forward like a lever. Echo continued applying gentle pressure to the book until she felt a click. The shelf swung toward her, revealing a shallow alcove set into the wall.

“Jackpot,” Echo whispered.

Inside the alcove were the treasures Perrin didn’t want found, some more obviously valuable than others. A triptych frame housed three tintypes of Avicen whom Echo had never seen before; the Avicen in the pictures were all short, like Perrin, and one of the younger ones had his deep-set eyes. Family, most likely. If the photos had been tucked away in this secret alcove, they had probably meant a great deal to Perrin. He would never be coming back for them, and it seemed wrong, somehow, to leave them there, forgotten. Echo slung her backpack off her shoulders and unzipped it. She carefully folded up the triptych and wrapped it in a scarf she found wadded up at the bottom of her backpack. Perhaps the Ala would know if Perrin had any surviving relatives who would appreciate the pictures. If not, then Echo would keep them, and even if she did not know the names of the Avicen in them, she would remember their faces. For Perrin.

On the alcove’s uppermost shelf, she found what she was looking for: a silver bowl, decorated with ornate etchings scrolling around its exterior. It was a scrying bowl. The same one Perrin must have used to track the bracelet he had given her. Inside the bowl’s basin was a ball made up of multi colored rubber bands. Echo put it aside, extremely doubtful that it was related to the bowl and its use. Perrin’s hoarding habits had always skirted toward the peculiar.

The bowl was heavy in her hands, far heavier than it looked. It must have been made out of solid silver, and not merely plated in it. The designs carved into the sides depicted roses tangled up with vines, and long, willowy branches of blossoming mugwort, with its distinctive thin, sharp leaves. Both flowers were common in divination rituals, and Echo suspected that carving them into the silver had amplified the magic of the bowl. She held it in both hands and breathed deeply. The Ala had been trying to teach her meditation techniques but so far, Echo had proven to be an atrocious pupil. It was so rare for the wheels in her mind to stop spinning long enough for her to find that calm place the Ala insisted was there. Echo tried it now, pulling in slow, languid breaths, focusing on nothing but the silver bowl. The weight of it. How it felt in her hands.

Her eyes closed.  In the silence, she listened for the sound of the blood rushing through her veins, the beating of her heart, the flow of air in her lungs. And then she found it. That calm place. Once she was there, she knew exactly what the Ala had meant during those interminable lectures. She was hyperaware of the nerve endings in her skin. All her senses were heightened. She heard a mouse scuttle across the floor in the main room of the shop, the faint murmur of voices out in the Agora as the warlocks went about their business. The silver bowl was cool against her palms, and the more Echo focused her attention on it, the more she noticed about it. There was magic in it, worked into the metal itself, perhaps by whoever had done the carvings.

No ordinary bowl would hum with that kind of energy

Echo opened her eyes. The sensation of magic left her in a dizzying wave, like air rushing from her lungs after a punch to the gut. The Ala had mentioned something about disengaging from a meditative state, but Echo hadn’t really been listening. Now she wished she had. She took a moment to steady herself. Her skin felt like it was stretched a little too tight over her skeleton, and the sounds that she had noticed had retreated back into silence, too slight or far away for her to hear them. She made a vow to herself to actually listen when the Ala was imparting wisdom the next time they sat down for a chat. There was so much for Echo to learn, so much that she did not understand. Arming herself with knowledge had always been her way of making herself not feel quite so helpless. Even when she had been a tiny runaway, living off stolen scraps, she’d had the books in her library to ground her. Listening wasn’t as easy as reading, at least not for Echo, but she made a silent promise to do better in the future. The Ala needed Echo at her best. All of her friends—her family—did.
Caius did.

And that was what she would give them.

Blog Tour- THE DRAGONS OF NOVA by Elise Kova An Interview & Giveaway!

Hey everyone! I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for THE DRAGONS OF NOVA by Elise Kova! I freaking love this amazing series!

I have an interview with Elise to share with you today! And make sure to enter the giveaway below!

Haven't heard of THE DRAGONS OF NOVA? Check it out!

Title: THE DRAGONS OF NOVA (Loom Saga #2)
Author: Elise Kova
Pub. Date: July 11, 2017
Publisher: Keymaster Press
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook
Pages: 488
Find it: Amazon, B&N, TBD, iBooks, Goodreads
Cvareh returns home to his sky world of Nova with the genius crafter Arianna as his temperamental guest. The mercurial inventor possesses all the Xin family needs to turn the tides of a centuries-old power struggle, but the secrets she harbors must be earned with trust -- hard to come by for Ari, especially when it comes to Dragons. On Nova, Ari finds herself closer to exacting vengeance against the traitor who killed everything -- and everyone – she once loved. But before Ari can complete her campaign of revenge, the Crimson Court exposes her shadowed past and reveals something even more dangerous sparking between her and Cvareh.

While Nova is embroiled in blood sport and political games, the rebels on Loom prepare for an all-out assault on their Dragon oppressors. Florence unexpectedly finds herself at the forefront of change, as her unique blend of skills -- and quick-shooting accuracy -- makes her a force to be reckoned with. For the future of her world, she vows vengeance against the Dragons.

Before the rebellion can rise, though, the Guilds must fall.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Elise! First, I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! Thanks for stopping by to answer my questions! I loved THE DRAGONS OF NOVA and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

Thanks for having me back!

For the readers: can you give us a recap THE ALCHEMISTS OF LOOM and what to expect in THE DRAGONS OF NOVA?

Warning, there are some spoilers in this recap of THE ALCHEMISTS OF LOOM!
We start THE ALCHEMISTS OF LOOM down on the steampunk land of Loom by meeting Arianna, a Fenthri with Dragon organs (otherwise known as a Chimera). She's got a big chip on her shoulder about Dragons but agrees to help one -- Cvareh -- to the Alchemist's Guild in exchange for a boon (any wish). Along with her gun-toting protege Florence they start for the guild on the other side of Loom.

However, Cvareh has stolen a piece of schematics from the Dragon King that's supposedly for the Philosopher's Box. His sister, Petra Xin'Oji, has a mind to use this schematic in tandem with the rebellion on Loom to overthrow the Dragon King Yveun and place her family in power up in the Dragon's sky world of Nova.

The Dragon King sends his Master Rider, the extremely loyal Leona, after Cvareh. This forces Cvareh, Arianna, and Florence to join forces with some of Florence's old friends, currently incarcerated for leaving the guild with Florence two years prior. After breaking out Helen and Will from the floating prison, the group goes underground, where they're separated for a time and hunted by wretches.

Back above ground, they reunite for an airship ride to get Florence properly changed into a Chimera and finish Cvareh's delivery. Leona attacks the airship and Arianna finally disposes of her.

Finally at Ter.2, Arianna reunites with an old "friend" who's now the Vicar Alchemist -- Sophie. Florence is transformed into a Chimera with Cvareh's blood and Arianna has to decide if she will return to her life in the shadows or stand up to fight with the rebellion once more as the designer of the Philosopher's Box.

Ultimately, Arianna heads to Nova with Cvareh and Florence remains with the rebellion.

What to expect in THE DRAGONS OF NOVA:

Readers will see a lot more of Nova, as the majority of the story will take place there. Because of this, there will be an opportunity to learn a lot more about the culture of Nova and Cvareh's family. Additionally, there will be two new points of view: Petra and Yveun.

Stakes will be higher and it has the highest "death count" of any single novel of mine. Things will also get a bit steamier!

Will book 3, THE REBELS OF GOLD, be the final book in the series? Is there a cover yet?

The plan is for book three to be the final book, but I'm still discussing with my editor if it should be split into two novels. This is why I called it the "Loom Saga" instead of the "Loom Trilogy." The cover reveal will happen about three months before the book's release.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

I don't write characters based on any one individual, but all my characters borrow traits, tells, and habits from people I know.
My best girl friend is a bit wild and quirky in all the right ways, and I feel very protective of her, so a bit of her made it into Florence and a bit of me made it into Ari for that relationship.

One of my other best friends is very level-headed with all the best leadership qualities you want in a person -- the sort of guy who always steps up without question and takes exceptional care of the people he loves. He inspired a lot of a character named Powell in Nova. Funny enough, I actually used his real name for the character originally, but I changed that in the finished version.

What is your favorite passage/scene from THE DRAGONS OF NOVA?

One of Florence's last chapters at the Harvesters Guild. I wrote it to "Fire" from the Angels & Demons soundtrack, and it's just a pivotal moment for the story as a whole. I'll say no more for fear of spoilers.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

This is impossible to answer! Every character has their pros and cons, ease and difficulties. Furthermore, if I didn't like writing them, how could I expect anyone to want to read them?

That being said... In book two, I had particular fun writing Petra and Florence.

Who is your ultimate Book Boyfriend?

Young Severus Snape, the original book crush. Not sure what that says about me... but it's the truth.

Honestly, I just write the stories I want to write, and however they turn out is how they turn out. AIR AWAKENS just so happened to be a YA story when it was finished. The central conflict of the book was about Vhalla finding herself and her place in the world. THE ALCHEMISTS OF LOOM doesn't have that central theme, so, when combined with the overall voice, that makes it Adult instead of YA.
