After a painful break-up in university, Bethany Clarke has sworn off love to focus on her career. From her humble South Side beginnings to her position as an architect intern at a prestigious Chicago firm, she's proven to be a hard worker and is proud of her accomplishments. In three years, she’ll be a fully licensed architect which is more important to her than anything else.

Confirmed bachelor Nicholas Grey is more than the playboy perpetrated by the tabloids. Now his position as CEO of the architecture firm Grey & Company is on the line, and his mother’s interference is making things more difficult. Nick’s committed to his work, but, in order to be taken seriously, he needs to land a huge project. A stable personal life will help guarantee the contract.

Fairy Godmother Faye Delmore hears Nick’s plea and steps in to help. Posing as a publicist, she suggests a strategy to polish his public image, which includes convincing Beth to play his wife. Faye knows Nick needs the huge project to save his job, but she also knows he needs Beth in his life.

What happens when you add a fairy godmother who loves playing matchmaker into the equation? A future designed by destiny.

Why Paranormal Romance?

Designed by Destiny is more contemporary in nature than my previous books. I’ve described it as a paranormal-contemporary romance to tether reader expectations. A misled reader is an unhappy reader. Therefore, I define this book as a hybrid subgenre of romance, including elements of both paranormal and contemporary.

Paranormal includes any elements that are beyond scientific explanation. My story includes fairy godmothers who are actual fairies. They even come with a crystal ball and some special abilities. Contemporary broadly refers to stories that occur in the post-World War II era. My story occurs in present day.

Although, contemporary romance novels with a hint of magic are not uncommon, the combination of paranormal and contemporary is a bit of a contradiction in terms of conflict. Paranormal tends to have more external conflict while contemporary focuses on internal conflict. Designed by Destiny has both. Without giving away too much…

External Conflict

The public’s perception of Nick based on his past reputation. Younger Nick had a penchant for parties and woman, garnering himself quite the reputation as an irresponsible playboy. That was then. Nick has since matured. He’s a professional architect and recently appointed CEO of his family’s architecture firm. Unfortunately, based on his past reputation, it’s difficult for others to see him in a new light. Especially with his mother actively sabotaging his credibility.

Internal Conflict

Beth’s views on love are based on her devasting college break-up. It was more than the end of a romantic relationship. It was the external confirmation of every derogatory thought Beth ever had of herself. She grew up in an economically-challenged, single-parent home. Her mother had to work multiple jobs to keep a roof over their head and food on the table so Beth learned early to be independent. She also knew she wanted a different life for herself. Achieving her dream of becoming an architect would take hard work, and Beth was up for the challenge. In university, she finally felt equal and accepted by her peers. Leland had been perfect on paper, and Beth had been thrilled when he pursued her. They had even planned a future together. Until she overheard him calling her the “side piece from South Side.” Add insult to injury, he also stole her dissertation. Beth learned her lesson. Avoid distractions. Stay focused on her future.

The whole raison d'être of a story is to watch the journey unfold. In the set-up, your characters will look a certain way, but, by the resolution, they will be forever changed. I enjoy the “extra” that comes with paranormal. Even in the small way I include magic in this story enhances it. There’s more than meets the eye in a paranormal story, and I enjoy revealing its secrets.

Intrigued? Designed by Destiny is available November 15 from Tirgearr Publishing.
