Haven't heard of SUMMONER RISING? Check it out!

Title: SUMMONER RISING
Author: Melanie McFarlane
Pub. Date: March 28, 2017
Publisher: Month9Books
Format: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 300
Excerpt from, The Book of Summoning:
Law One: A summoner is responsible for all creatures it lets through from the netherworld.

Dacie Cantar wishes someone had explained the Laws of Summoning to her before she watched a shadowy creature crawl out of a painting at the local arcade. At least it explains the strange things she's witnessed since moving in with her great-aunt, after her mother’s untimely death. But who wants to be followed by shadows the rest of their life? Add that to being stalked by a strange boy at school, who just might be her Tovaros (aka soulmate), it’s about all Dacie can handle in her new life.

As she nears her seventeenth birthday, will she be ready for her new responsibilities, or will the shadows that stalked her mother until her death, finally consume Dacie, too? And then there’s Law Two…

Now on to the interview!

Hey Melanie! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! It’s been a while since you’ve been here I’m so happy you could stop by for a chat! SUMMONER RISING was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you give us a little info about SUMMONER RISING and the characters?

Summoner Rising is Mortal Instruments meets Final Fantasy. It’s about a soulmate who makes a girl immortal. It’s about an epic family-line of demon summoners and the dark fate bestowed upon them to help maintain the balance of good and evil in the world. And above all, it’s about a very sassy girl named Dacie who’s never belonged.

So this is your second series how different writing this one compared to THERE ONCE WERE STARS? And what are you working on now?

Summoner Rising was completely different from There Once Were Stars. I wanted the main characters to be opposite. Where Nat is naïve and innocent, Dacie is jaded and bitter. Where Nat is sweet and doesn’t want trouble, Dacie is stubborn and goes looking for trouble. But both are strong female leads in their own right. And this is what I wanted to doshow how two different characters can overcome their shortcomings to succeed.

Next I’ve got to finish up some sequels, but I’m super excited about two contemporary YA novels I’m finishing up (mystery & historical). It’s fun to jump genres. I definitely have a ton of dystopian and paranormal ones waiting in the wings too!

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Always. I did write a bit of my husband in Tryan. And Constantine is very much a mix of my father and father-in-law.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I really liked the imp, even though he’s a bit of a shit (can I swear?). You’ll see him again and again throughout the series. Originally I was thinking something like a house-elf from HP when I wrote about him, but mine’s much more heinous!

What is your favorite passage/scene in SUMMONER RISING?

I love the scene when Dacie turns Wendigobut even better is the scene where she meets Eli. Oh and then theres Diavol. Seriously, I just cant pick one. Too many story leads in book one for the rest of the series!

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I had to read up on tea leaves, which I found a ton of information from a new contact-turned-friend, sharastar99 from Instagram. She is seriously the go-to on any paranormal research. And then there was my demon research. I have a mini-library of demon-related books and for a while I started feeling uncomfortable having them around. I buried them to the bottom of a pile every time I finished looking information up. It was touch and go there!

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Wellhmmm. This is hardultimate? I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Midnight from Wink, Poppy, Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke. Sweet, but uncertain, Midnight means well and is humble but still a little vengeful to those who do wrong. I don’t know, it just makes him all degrees of right.

What inspired you to write YA?

I don’t know that there could be a better age to write forYA is where independence, curiosity, and finding oneself all collide into one beautiful mess.
