About The Book:
Title: LUCKY CALLER
Author: Emma Mills
Pub. Date: January 14, 2020
Publisher: Henry Holt & Company
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Pages: 336

With the warmth, wit, intimate friendships, and heart-melting romance she brings to all her books, Emma Mills crafts a story about believing in yourself, owning your mistakes, and trusting in human connection in Lucky Caller.

When Nina decides to take a radio broadcasting class her senior year, she expects it to be a walk in the park. Instead, it’s a complete disaster.

The members of Nina's haphazardly formed radio team have approximately nothing in common. And to maximize the awkwardness her group includes Jamie, a childhood friend she'd hoped to basically avoid for the rest of her life.

The show is a mess, internet rumors threaten to bring the wrath of two fandoms down on their heads, and to top it all off Nina's family is on the brink of some major upheaval.

Everything feels like it's spiraling out of control―but maybe control is overrated?

PRAISE FOR LUCKY CALLER

A well-crafted, bittersweet comedy of errors filled with realistically flawed characters and taut, witty dialogue. - Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Interview

Hey Emma!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! LUCKY CALLER sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the LUCKY CALLER and the characters?

LUCKY CALLER is the story of a high school senior named Nina, who enrolls in a radio broadcasting class during her final semester of school. As part of the class, students have to put on a weekly radio show, and Nina is thrown together in a haphazard group that includes Jamie, an old childhood friend who Nina has a bit of a history with. The radio show turns into a bit of a disaster theres mistaken identity, hijinks, screw-ups both on and off air, and hopefully a lot of fun!

What are you working on now?

It’s a little bit of a secret at the moment, but mainly because I’m not sure how it’s going to turn out! But I can report: it’s another YA book (though it’s a little different than my others!)

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

For LUCKY CALLER, no. In a couple of my previous booksyes! J

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I really enjoyed writing the character of Joydeep, because he gets a lot of good banter and one-liners! I also really enjoyed writing Sidney, Nina’s theater-obsessed little sister, and Dan, the stepfather-to-be of Nina and her sisters. I don’t think I had a least favorite even characters that present challenges while writing can be interesting to explore!

What is your favorite passages/scenes in LUCKY CALLER?

There is a sequence at the end that I particularly love, but I don’t want to spoil anything!

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I based some of experiences in the radio station after my own experiences doing college radio (I definitely made one or two of the mistakes that Nina and her radio group encounter while I was an on-air deejay!). I also researched a fair bit about high school radio programs in general, and elements of radio broadcasting. There are several high school radio stations in Indianapolis that I listened to a lot, both while I was working on LUCKY CALLER, and beforehandthey served as a bit of inspiration for the story! I also spent some time delving into 90s music, both radio hits to compile inspiration for the Sounds of the 90s shows, as well as grunge songs for inspiration for Existential Dead.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

I would have to say Levi from FANGIRL.

What inspired you to write YA?

I’m a big YA fan myself. I love the element of discovery in YA storiesthe characters are often having certain experiences or feelings for the first time, and it can feel really potent and heightened as a result.
