In this imaginative escape into an enthralling new world, World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott begins a new trilogy with her debut young adult novel, weaving an epic story of a girl struggling to do what she loves in a society suffocated by rules of class and privilege.

Jessamy's life is a balance between acting like an upper class Patron and dreaming of the freedom of the Commoners. But at night she can be whomever she wants when she sneaks out to train for The Fives, an intricate, multi-level athletic competition that offers a chance for glory to the kingdom's best competitors. Then Jes meets Kalliarkos, and an unlikely friendship between a girl of mixed race and a Patron boy causes heads to turn. When a scheming lord tears Jes's family apart, she'll have to test Kal's loyalty and risk the vengeance of a powerful clan to save her mother and sisters from certain death.

Now on to the playlist!
“I Am The Best” -- A Playlist for Court of Fives

I write to music, and I love to create unique playlists for each of my series.  It’s so easy to put the playlist on shuffle and let the music flow as I work, especially when I have so many songs that they can play for hours without repeating. I have an extensive collection of film music as well as music with lyrics in foreign languages because then I can’t get distracted by listening to the words. These days I also listen to a lot of vocal trance for the way it slides by and lets my mind pour into the story. The key is to set a mood that matches the feelings I hope to evoke.

For Court of Fives, a fantasy story set in a world of Patrons and Commoners, with a heroine who is a fierce competitor in a sport she is not supposed to be participating in, I needed a playlist that reflects the conflicts and the range of emotions in the book.

Fantastic Baby by BIG BANG

I love K-pop videos, and this is a great one with all the fashion, color, and attitude that anyone could want (as well as a hint of revolution). I think of it as setting the scene.

“Three minutes is not enough for this race.”

Do My Thing by Estelle (feat. Janelle Monae)

This is a song for people determined to do and be what is in their innermost heart, something the four sisters struggle with because of their restrictive upbringing.

“I wear my clothes like this because I can
I wear my hair like this because I can
I walk around like this because I can
And I do my thing like 'cause this who I am (this who I am)
If you are expecting me to give you an apology
For being nothing that you used to, used to
Well go on right ahead and wait
Hold your breath and concentrate
Keep holding till your face turns blue”

At the End of Every Journey by Sarah Lynn

Kiya and Esladas’s song.

“As you smile at me
As you welcome me
I am home
At the end of every journey
At the end of every day,
You are always there to accept me
Love me for who I am.”

Elastic Heart by Sia

“And I know that I can survive
I'll walk through fire to save my life”

Fall In Love by Phantogram

So bittersweet.

You couldn't see you were the car I crashed

I Am the Best by 2NE1

Self explanatory, but here are excerpts from the lyrics, translated into English:

Grab anyone and ask them

Who is the best
I am the best

I am the best
I am the best
I am the best

Who? You are better than me?
No no no no na na na na”

About Kate:

Kate Elliott has been writing stories since she was nine years old, which has led her to believe that writing, like breathing, keeps her alive. As a child in rural Oregon, she made up stories because she longed to escape to a world of lurid adventure fiction.  She now writes fantasy, steampunk, science fiction, and YA.

It should come as no surprise that she met her future husband in a sword fight. When he gave up police work to study archaeology, they and their three children fell into an entirely new set of adventures amid dusty Mexican ruins and mouthwatering European pastry shops.  Eventually her spouse's work forced them to move to Hawaii, where she took up outrigger canoe paddling. With the three children out of the house, they now spoil the schnauzer.
