Wren MacAvoy works as a coal miner for a domed city that was constructed in the mid-nineteenth century to protect the royal blood line of England when astronomers spotted a comet on a collision course with Earth. Humanity would be saved by the most groundbreaking technology of the time. But after nearly 200 years of life beneath the dome, society has become complacent and the coal is running out.  Plus there are those who wonder, is there life outside the dome or is the world still consumed by fire? When one of Wren's friends escapes the confines of the dome, he is burned alive and put on display as a warning to those seeking to disrupt the dome’s way of life. But Alex’s final words are haunting. “The sky is blue.”  What happens next is a whirlwind of adventure, romance, conspiracy and the struggle to stay alive in a world where nothing is as it seems. Wren unwittingly becomes a catalyst for a revolution that destroys the dome and the only way to survive might be to embrace what the entire society has feared their entire existence.

Ashes of Twilight by Kassy Tayler was one of the best Dystopian books that I have read in a long time! I’m really glad I found this book in the shelves over at the Book Review because this one would have completely passed under my radar otherwise. I had never even heard of this book before that, for which I’m really sad. There should have been a lot more pre pub noise for this one! Also the cover isn't one to catch the eye but, this is one of those books where I say ignore the cover and read it!

One of the things I loved about Ashes of Twilight was it reminded me a bit of the movie City of Ember. I haven’t read the book but I loved the movie. So take the cool underground aspects of Ember and add them into Ashes with a Young Adult cast of characters, a love story that was beautifully written, and the mystery of what is really outside and wow! This story just blew my mind! I am also dying to get my hands on the next book in the series Shadows of Glass because the ending even though it wasn't a cliffhanger had me craving more!

Of course I can’t leave a review without talking about the love interest right? Let’s just say I fell hard for Pace he’s definitely going to make my top 10 book boyfriends list of 2012! He’s handsome and brave and loving and not a bad boy (surprise, surprise lol) you all will fall for him just like I did! I also loved the MC Wren she’s a strong female lead and I can’t wait to see what happens in her story in Shadows!

I chose a passage between Pace and Wren that made me say aww and packs a little heat too ;) ;)

“I agree with what you’re saying, Wren. My point is I don’t want you to die because of it. I know my life is a given, that as soon as they find me I’m dead. I can only hope and pray that it’s fast and not like what they did to Alex or Tom. And it will all be worth it, if I know you’re safe. I’ll go upside right now and tell everyone that there is a way out and we’re all being held prisoner, as long as I know that you’ll be all right.”

“Pace…” My heart swells at his words, the sweetest words I’ve ever heard, yet also so tragic and without hope.

He pulls me to him and kisses me, hungrily, possessively, as if he is going to die in the next minute and I’m the only good thing that can save him. The kisses we shared before were good, but this kiss, this desperation, is overwhelming. My insides catch fire and I cling to him, once more to get close enough to satisfy the burning that courses through my veins.

More…I want more… Pace pulls me into his lap without stopping the kiss. I love the way he holds me, the way he moves me, tenderly and gently, but without effort, as if I’m a bird in the palm of his hand that he wants to keep safe, yet he doesn't want to hurt if it decides to fly free.

His touch shows he wants me, but it doesn't trap me; it gives me freedom to make the choice. And I choose him. I chose him the second I held my hand out to him and when he asked me to help. And live or die, he will always be my choice.

Please, God, let it be live.

WVMP Music talk with Shane and a Giveaway!

So today is a happy day and a sad day mixed into one! I have the amazing Shane McAllister (one of my top book boyfriends of all time! Don’t tell Ciara lol) here form Jeri Smith-Ready’s WVMP series to talk about 90’s music! The sad part? One of my favorite series has come to an end *sobs* and yes peeps this is an adult series I know I don’t post much about them but if you like adult paranormal books I suggest you read this one!

So now to pass the mic to Shane!

Hey everyone, it's great to be here at Two Chicks on Books to talk about 90s music. Thanks so much to Jaime for having me—we go way back, so it means a lot to write a post for her blog. I hope you like it.

---

We all have that one song or album (or entire CD shelf) that we used to play over and over during the worst time in our lives, right? The song that fed all our unhealthy impulses and let us wallow in our rage or heartbreak? The song we just couldn't stop listening to, even though we knew it was bad for us?

For me it was Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot," which came out in July 1995, just a few months after I became a vampire. If you've read WICKED GAME or my short story, "Last Request," you know that I never wanted to be undead. I just wanted to be dead.

Even after I became a vampire, I did my best not to survive. I tried to starve or stay out until sunrise. Once I even tried staking myself (it was kind of comical—I used a shard of "wood" paneling that was so cheap it had very little actual tree product in it). Eventually the Control captured me and put me on suicide watch in the fledgling-vampire ward of one of their "nursing homes."

That was when I heard this song on the radio. Let's just say it was a good thing I was under close supervision.

Like most people, I thought at first that "Hey Man Nice Shot" was about Kurt Cobain's April 1994 suicide-by-shotgun. My own suicide attempts  were inspired by that event, so I figured it was at the top of everyone's mind. But apparently Richard Patrick of Filter wrote it about Pennsylvania state treasurer Budd Dwyer, who shot himself in the head during a live televised press conference in 1987. The poor dude had been convicted of bribery and was probably going to jail (later evidence showed that he might have been as innocent as he claimed).

One reason he committed suicide was so that his family would get the hefty pension that came from him dying in office. As someone who has always worried about money, I can totally understand this. But he could have offed himself in private and still accomplished that. He did it in public to make a statement about feeling persecuted, or so he said.

Filter made a public statement about "Hey Man Nice Shot" after it was released:

"It is not a celebration or glorification of taking one's own life. The phrase 'hey man, nice shot' is a reference to the final act itself, an expression of guts and determination of a person standing up for what they believe is right." (Source: Songfacts.com)

I don't know about you, but "guts and determination" sound pretty "thumbs-up" to me. And in my 1995 state of despair, I thought to myself, "if only I'd had the guts to do what Dwyer did, I wouldn't be suffering right now."

Yeah. Now you see why I was locked up for my own protection.

So I used to play this song over and over, getting angrier and angrier, wishing this song had come out a few months sooner so I could've used it to find the "strength" to shoot myself like I'd always planned.

Once I got help, not just from Control counselors but from my eventual employer David, I realized that suicide wasn't a sign of strength. It's not a sign of weakness, either. It's a sign of sickness. Problem is, sickness makes for boring songs (nothing rhymes with Zoloft).

I still love this song, for its lumbering bass line (especially the intro—who could resist that?), its driving guitar riffs, and its cathartic vocals. It's a perfect example of the quiet-loud-quiet formula that gives grunge its emotional power. I love playing it at home when Ciara is away. But I won't play it live with my band, Vital Fluid, and I won't play it on the air except by request.

The moral of the story? You can search songs for beauty and energy and entertainment, but be careful searching them for wisdom. They just might steer you off a cliff.

---

Thanks again for having me, Jaime. And hey, Jeri is giving away a signed, personalized copy of any book in the WVMP RADIO series to one randomly drawn commenter. All you have to do is answer one or both of the following in the comments below:

When not writing, Jeri she can usually be found—well, thinking about writing, or on Twitter. Like her characters, she loves music, movies, and staying up very, very late.

Paperback: 304 pages

ISBN: 0803736819

Rating: Obsessed!!!!!!!!!

From Goodreads.

Tamora Pierce meets George R. R. Martin in this smart, political, medieval fantasy-thriller.

There is a new king on the throne of Tildor. Currents of political unrest sweep the country as two warring crime families seek power, angling to exploit the young Crown's inexperience. At the Academy of Tildor, the training ground for elite soldiers, Cadet Renee de Winter struggles to keep up with her male peers. But when her mentor, a notorious commander recalled from active duty to teach at the Academy, is kidnapped to fight in illegal gladiator games, Renee and her best friend Alec find themselves thrust into a world rife with crime, sorting through a maze of political intrigue, and struggling to resolve what they want, what is legal, and what is right.

Ok so I know I talk about how much I love High Fantasy... well peeps get used to it because it is one of my favorite genres! And The Cadet of Tildor just jumped to my top ten list of all-time best High Fantasy books! Just a fyi up front there’s little to no romance in this book so if that’s what you’re looking for it’s not here. But really I didn’t even notice the lack of romance because I was so wrapped up in this amazing story! This story is told in third person so we get to see many of the different characters and I loved every minute of it!

I adored the character of Renee de Winter (I love the tribute to Dumas and The Three Musketeers!). Renee is amazing! She’s strong, extremely loyal and a badass fighter. Then there’s Korrish Savoy; trust me peeps there may not be romance but you will find yourselves falling for this guy! Oh and there’s Renee’s best friend Alec whom I adored and wanted to throttle at the same time!

And there’s magic, cage fighting, sword fights, political intrigue, kidnappings, family problems…. Oh I could go on forever about this book!

I am so happy that this book isn't a stand alone because I think I would go crazy if it was! I want more of this world! I can't get enough of it!!!!

So since I usually try to share swoon-worthy passages and there was not really any I tried to find one that I think you’ll all enjoy…

Renee did not realize she had tripped until Savoy grabbed her tunic to steady her on her feet. She shuffled to reclaim her balance, her muscles trembling even at rest. She stared at him, aghast. “I—“

“Saw your first battle a day ago.” He put away his blade. “You’ll see more.”

She wiped her face, realizing through a haze of exhaustion that her mind was quiet for the first time since the Queen’s Day dinner. Savoring the tingling relief, she looked at Savoy and knew that he knew. She had needed that fight.

“Thank you, sir.” She chewed at her lip. “Will...will you be bored again tomorrow?”

“Perhaps.”

Renee bowed and drew herself to full height before him. “I will get stronger, sir.”

“Save it for class. Won’t be much use with me.” He shrugged and turned away. “And if you plan to play strength games again, de Winter, don’t bother showing up.”

“Yes, sir.” Renee bowed again. “I—I’ll be here.” One did not turn down a chance to train with the leader of the Seventh, no matter how impractical a style he insisted on teaching.

And, she noted with a smile, the muscles shifting beneath his shirt didn’t hurt either.

Make sure to check out the awesome trailer too!

Review- Through The Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

Hardcover:  400 pages
Publisher: Harper Teen(Harper)

Rating: Obesssed!!!!!!!!!!!
From Goodreads.

A world-defying love is put to the ultimate test in the heart-stopping sequel to Veronica Rossi's "masterpiece," Under the Never Sky. (Examiner.com)

It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder,
Can their love survive through the ever night?

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

I freaking loved this book so much it hurts! I loved Under the Never Sky but I am completely obsessed with Through the Ever Night! Why you ask? Well it’s quite simple, this book had so much of Roar in it! I love Perry and Aria but whenever Roar is in a scene I almost forget they exist. And he sings in this one part and even though I can’t hear it; I can imagine his beautiful, soulful voice... even when singing a ridiculous song! Crap went off on a tangent there sorry. Oh and we get to meet Liv in this book too and I will admit I hated her for so many reasons (Roar, *cough* Roar). But she is an awesome character!

Ok so onto the story. Veronica has done it again! She has written a vividly beautiful but violent world where if the weather doesn’t kill you the people may. And I was on the edge of my seat reading almost the whole thing! Oh and Veronica threw in so many WTF moments I thought I may throw the book! But I didn’t, I know some people who did though lol. Oh and yes people it’s told in both Aria and Perry’s POV’s again as well. So never fear Perry fans you’ll get a ton of him! And OMFG the ending was so awesome I am dying to get my hands on book 3 Into the Still Blue!

Ok so this wouldn't be a Jaime review without a Roar scene to share with you so here goes!!! Aria is speaking to him telepathically.

She reached out and rested her hand on Roar’s forearm. For some reason, this seemed easier. Maybe it took less courage to just let herself think than to speak her worries aloud.

‘What if this was a sign? Maybe I’m not supposed to be an Outsider.’

He surprised her by taking her hand and threading his fingers through hers. “You already are an Outsider. You fit everywhere. You just don’t see it yet.”

She stared at their hands. He’d never done that before.

Roar gave her a droll look. “It’s just odd having you lay your hand on my arm all the time,” he said, responding to her thoughts.

‘Yes, but this feels intimate. Don’t you think it does? I don’t mean that I think we’re being too intimate. I guess I do. Roar, sometimes it’s really hard to get used to this.’

Roar flashed a grin. “Aria, this isn't intimate. If I were being intimate with you, trust me, you’d know.”

She rolled her eyes. ‘Next time you say something like that, you should toss a red rose and then leave with a swish of your cape.’

He gazed off like he was imagining it. “I could do that.”

They fell into silence, and she realized how comforting it felt being connected to him this way.

“Good,” Roar said. “That’s the idea.”

I really hope there’s a trailer for this one because I loved the one for UtNS! Haven’t seen that one yet? Here ya go! :D

Review- Touched by Corrine Jackson

Touched
Corrine Jackson
Release Date: November 27, 2012
Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: K-Teen (Kensington)
ISBN:  0758273339
Source: ARC from the author
Rating: Loved!!!!!!!!!

From Goodreads.

Remy O’Malley heals people with touch—but every injury she cures becomes her own. Living in a household with an abusive stepfather, she has healed untold numbers of broken bones, burns, and bruises. And then one night her stepfather goes too far.

Being sent to live with her estranged father offers a clean start and she is eager to take it. Enter Asher Blackwell. Once a Protector of Healers, Asher sacrificed his senses to become immortal. Only by killing a Healer can a Protector recover their human senses. Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies. Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll be coming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first.

This is Book One in the Touched trilogy.

Touched by Corrine Jackson was a great read! It was a Romeo and Juliet type of story that had twists and turns! I will admit some things in the story were a bit predictable and some even a bit cliché (there’s some mind reading that I understand but could have done without) but it didn't matter because I devoured this story! Oh and don’t get distracted by the Twilightish cover I know it’s not the prettiest thing but the story is good!

I loved the idea of Healers and Protectors and I really loved Remy as a MC, her strength was amazing! I don’t know if I could have been as strong as her in an abusive situation like that. Oh and I really liked that she had to absorb people’s injuries to heal them I think that made me love her even more to see that she was willing to injure herself to help others. I also loved her Dad in this story normally I’m kinda meh about the parental units in YA books but I absolutely loved Ben!  Oh and I loved, loved, loved Asher he was gorgeous, frustrating, brave, infuriating, loving, and mysterious! Oh and a bad boy with a motorcycle to boot!

I loved Asher’s brother Gabe he’s a total ass but there was something about him that just drew me to him. So yep as normal I’m team bad boy I’ll take Gabe and Remy can have Asher ;) ;)

People that love a good paranormal love story will eat this one up!

I chose a passage between Remy and Asher where she finds out he’s been reading her mind.

I stared at Asher and waited. ‘Are you reading my mind?’

He hesitated and then nodded.

I sagged in my seat as I remembered the night at the pool and the times before that when my thoughts had focused on him. On my growing feelings for him. Horror had me cringing at the idea that he’d heard it all.

‘How long? How long have you been listening?’

“Off and on since you healed me,” he admitted.

Humiliation flooded through me, and my thoughts should have set him on fire.

He held up a hand after a moment to halt the mental onslaught.

“Remy.” He closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead as if he had a headache. “I didn't choose this. You know I didn't  We’re changing the longer we’re near each other. I know you feel it.”

couldn't disagree. My mental walls had grown tougher and more flexible after his constant prodding and that other ability—the frightening ability to twist pain and energy back on another—had grown stronger too. Undeniably, he’d changed me. Still, I sensed he meant something more.

With effort, I made my mind a blank wasteland to shut him out.

His eyes focused, and he smiled. “You don’t give an inch do you?”

“What are you trying to tell me?”

“It’s only a matter of time before other Protectors find out about you. It’s a miracle you've lasted alone this long. I didn't want to feel anything for you, but we’re past that now. I’m a Protector, Remy. You’re a healer. You could be the one we've heard rumors about, the one who could make us mortal again. I give you fair warning that I intend to take my duty very seriously.”

‘Whether I want you to or not.’ I could hear the promise implied in his tone.

“I’m sorry, but yes.”

“Get out of my head!” I said, in a fierce whisper.

He shrugged in apology, but his voice had an edge of humor. “I’m not sure I can. Honestly, I’m not sure I would even if I knew how. This link could be the most powerful asset I have since I suspect you won’t be talking to me for a while.”

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Ok y’all I just ate this book up! It was fantastic full of suspense, twists and turns, romance, and hawt boys! And not just two peeps; there were four!!!! And they are each unique and I fell for each of them in their own way.

This story was so good! It was the perfect blend of sci-fi applied in the real world. And who knows? The things that happen to the characters in the books could actually be happening somewhere here in the world! I think that’s what I liked the most about it. I mean I love me a good sci-fi/fantasy where there’s aliens and stuff that could never happen but, this just felt so real!

I felt like I was on the journey that Anna and the boys took. I felt Anna’s pain when she learns some wicked truths and, also I fell in love with Sam; as she fell deeper for him! Of course Sam is all Anna’s lol because another boy in the book fully captured my heart. Nick. The bad boy of the group was by far my favorite with his dark hair, blue eyes, bad attitude, and love of organic shampoo! He’s guarded and an asshat but he has his reasons and I can’t wait to find out more about him in book 2! Which coincidentally I need like right now!!!!!

I had a ton of passages marked in this one but I chose one between Anna and one of the other boys; Cas, because he cracked my ass up!

“Well..” Cas propped himself in a fork of branches and looked down. “Are you pumping me for gossip? Because that’s what it feels like.”

I warmed. “What? No!”

“Come on, Anna, you’re in love with him, aren't you?”

I could barely make out his facial features in the darkness, but I didn't have to in order to hear the sly smirk in his voice.

If Cas knew I liked Sam, did Sam know? Of course ge did. I wasn’t exactly secretive about the whole thing. But hearing it out loud changed everything. I suddenly felt nauseous.

I put my face in my hands. “Oh my God.”
The tree branches rustled. Cas dropped to the ground next to me and patted my head. “It’s all right. Go ahead and admit you’re in love with me too. Let’s get everything off our chests while we’re at it.”

I swatted him but he dodged away. “You’re not making me feel better.”

“Who said I was trying to make you feel better? Fact: Sam’s got swagger. Fact: I’m straight. Fact: Even though I’m straight, I sorta love the dude. So I can’t say I blame you.”
